Not my favourite recording of this piece. The tempo in the first movement is way over the top, forcing the pianist to skip notes left right and centre. We can't even properly hear the dotted rhythm in the opening theme , because they are rushing like hell. It seems this performance is all about cheap sensationalism and appearances.
i agree with most of that (not your last sentence but no matter). this is the first recording i heard of this sonata and was afraid that was the tempo... also robs it of orchestral effects in the piano. what recording would you recommend
@@ncarterette I'm inclined to agree about the performance, even though I think Maisky has a wonderful tone and phrasing... Best recordings - obviously Rostropovich with Devetzi and Piatigorsky/Pentarrio. The recording with Raphaela Gromes is the first I knew - worth a listen, but nothing revelatory. I've always thought Argerich would be perfect for the piano part , but there is no Maisky/Argerich recording sadly. (If you've never heard her recording of the Chopin Cello Sonata with Rostropovich, listen to it!)
The pianist is not being sensitive enough to the cellist and is overplaying in places. There are places where you can’t even hear the cello part which is a shame because his playing is just marvelous.
never heard such an awful performance - it sounds like a soundtrack for a bad cartoon. Strauss himself may be really happy not to hear this persiflage. A great example of bad taste.
Maybe, we should forgive ignoramuses, for, if you look at his play list you will see Abba and other pop simple music for simple tastes. Why did I bother to look? Probably;y just curious.
@@DavidSmith-kc4hz Dude, stop being mean to people for having an opinion. I'm playing this piece right now and I don't like this performance. This doesn't mean that I don't like cellist, I'm actually a fan of him. And then, Pop music does not mean that you have a bad or as you said a simple taste. And that person also watched this video so I'm sure he/she isn't only a fan of pop music 🤦♀️
