TEN CREATIVE COMMANDMENTS ►
1. Create
You are commanded to create. Say it and believe it.
2. Question
Never accept the limitations of what others believe to be possible. Decide it for yourself.
3. Revise
Revising is an inescapable pain. ONLY out of revision are great things born.
4. Listen
Learn to listen to your creative instincts and they will speak to you
5. Focus
Get a clear picture in your mind of what you want to create. Pick your goal and stick to it.
6. Change
Change is necessary. People will stop watching if you do the same thing all the time.
7. Angles
Angles are everything, and all are unique. Changing an angle can change the world.
8. Overload
Overload the world with your creations. Leave them guessing what you will do next.
9. Obsession
If you want to be the absolute best, you must be obsessed with it.
10. Satisfaction
Never Ever Become Satisfied. Satisfaction is the end of your creative journey.

Project based learning is so underutilized. I'm in school for engineering and it's hard to keep motivated when all I'm doing is solving generic textbook problems. Anytime I've done a project I feel I've learned so much and that knowledge actually sticks!

It always makes me cringe to see other people complain about getting assigned a project in school. If I could I would have all my assignments be project based.

You guys actually inspired me to buckle down and work hard - I was a bit surprised to hear the opposite happening with others. I was getting burnt out at uni and in a place where I would curl up and hide from the work I had to do. I was watching your Corridor Crew videos and just as you guys said: I saw multiple videos of you guys staying up late, working hard and punching it out because that's what you guys had to do. You helped me turn things around and finish strong at school. Three years later, when I'm overwhelmed I still think back on those videos and the way they instilled a fundamental drive in me to keep going and put in the work. It honestly helps me to strap in and get in a positive mindset. So there's some real-life feedback that you guys do actually promote hard work and discipline to your viewers too. Thank you and keep up the good work Corridor. Edit: Right after commenting this I looked through my favourite quotes on my phone and found this one from Niko: "You can do good stuff quickly if you just put your mind to it and freak out hard enough."

I love this podcast so much. Heres a couple of random thoughs about why I love my VFX peers: 1. VFX technology is evolving so fast, that literally everybody starts out knowing nothing and will always have to rely on asking others. Which makes it an incredibly helpful community. Its not like there is a manual for 3ds max dos 1 that still applies and you can just buy... 2. It also means you gotta keep learning and keep being curious. Which generally are great character traits. 3. You realize pretty quickly how many hours and how many people it takes to make truly great VFX. Its very, very, very rarely just that ONE talented person. I wish more people in other professions would realize, how they are all relying on each other and how it should make you more humble. 4. The amount of knowledge you need is ...vast...not just about all the different softwares and how they play together, but just about...how the world works in general. About perception in general. 5. VFX Artists know, that they are basically only limited by their imagination.

It eases my mind a little every time I hear an industry vfx artist talk about their experience because it's really hard to know if your making the right decisions as far as education when you're first getting into it. It's nice to hear that almost everyone that is deep into it started off not amazing but built their way up to it. Because if you can look at your work and see even a little progress from your last project then it'll be easier to imagine that someday you can be where all the professionals are.

I'm a multimedia and computer science high school teacher in the USA. I became a teacher because I loved making videos in high school and wanted to share that with others. After COVID though, I really want to give up teaching multimedia and just stick with computer science. The reason is Project Based Learning is great, until students do nothing. Every week I stand in front of a class, explaining the next project, but I know that the majority of the students won't actually record anything. Of the 2-3 that actually do get up and hit record on their phones, one person will actually finish editing the video. It has made me feel like what I do is completely worthless. It's sad that so many students want learn how to create videos or do digital art, but the norm now is most of those students will just sit on their phone and come up with excuses for why they haven't started the project yet.

i think what a project based learning do is weed out people that are actually interested vs the slacker because you can force a slacker to do an assignment, but you can't force a slacker to do a project and at the end of the day, if they can't be arsed, i guess it's just not the right path for them, that's fine i guess if there's something to be asked though, what kind of project do you ask, how restrictive vs nebulous it is. because i feel for beginner, you definitely need to hand hold them more with what projects they do because some people are paralyzed with not knowing what they can do. Or their brain is just not used to generating ideas yet

I heard that the already iconic Penguin car chase scene of The Batman was shot with a Helios 44-2 and a Jupiter 9. I know he's in Canada, but even a remote episode of the podcast with Tito Ferradans would be cool to talk about his anamorfaking process of modifying lenses.

Super interesting conversation here. I totally relate to what Jordan was saying - just knowing that the VFX in those early corridor videos were done by 1-2 people was really inspiring for me when I was learning. I used to download the before & after videos so I could crop in & use the same plates that you guys used, just so I could try to recreate those same effects as closely as I could haha. I learned so much purely through that process of emulation, which I think is key.

A computer saying f-ed up stuff reminds me of the short story "The Library of Babel " by Jorge Luis Borges. I think Jake would love it. It's basically a thought experiment saying: What if there's a library, where the books have every possible combination of letters? Most books would be nonsense, some would randomly be identical to Shakespeare, and presumably, some books would be identical to internet trolling.

This podcast episode really spoke to me with the self taught learning process. I’ve been learning Houdini for about half a year at this point with CAD programs being my 3D jumping point, and I relate to Jordan’s experience of learning until I’m too tired to learn (UV issues in particular). I’d consider myself a corridor kiddie, although I’m going to school for engineering instead of vfx. Regardless, similarly to Wren’s vfx artist explains series, I’m hoping to incorporate what I learn to augment my school projects! There’s just something magical about vfx, and being able to turn fiction into perceived reality.

VFX can definitely be self taught, but there are still some aspects of it that you miss out on unless you go to school for a vfx bachelor or something. In-person feedback and demonstrations from industry veterans is very very useful. And since vfx is part of a bigger pipeline, school will most likely require teamwork and collaborations with other departments. It also tests your discipline for time management and deadlines. Getting introduced to a streamlined and structured file management setup was also very neat. Project based learning is obviously heavily practiced on in school. This is all my perspective as a VFX student btw.

I compare Corridor and what they do to what Penn and Teller did with the magic industry, it's not a class on how to do things, it's showing the moving parts behind something that seems so beyond the reach of the general populus. It's great for showing what's behind the curtain and some of the processes that go into it, but it's not in and of itself a replacement for actually learning how to do those things. Having watched Penn and Teller and their breakdowns of magic acts, someone could watch a magician do an act and have an idea of the skill and practice that goes into it, but they probably couldn't do it themeselves without tons of practice. Same thing with Corridor, and it's great for sparking that interest for some, but it's not an actual class or anything, and I really appreciate it.

Last time I commented on a corridor video might have been when they dropped the Christmas video and they had the original 'is this trash' segment with clint lol. It's nice seeing them continue to grow with new people and discuss VFX for those they influence with their productions. In my experience (and I guess my two cents)- learning by doing has been the reason I've learned all I have from video production, I would watch the productions of others and compare them to my own (this must have started around the time I was 11, I'm turning 25 in may haha), I would dissect areas in which my videos lacked and where I could improve (writing, acting, directing, VFX, audio, color/style/look, etc.) and look up tutorials on how to improve on those areas, this has lead me to become very adept and flexible in a lot of aspects of production (I'm no master, but I can wear many hats). For a while (during my time in college) I lead a student ran film program and taught a lot of my peers all I could about production- and tried to guide their leaning with their interests as we didn't really have anyone else to guide us (not a very 'arts' focused school we attended)- which lead to producing some fun content as a team and students finding their favorite aspects of productions. This lead to students who would graduate from our primarily engineering/medical school pursuing film post-college, so I guess positive impressions were made while we all grinded on improving our own skills during our time there. Ended up graduating from school in spring of 2022 and am now a firmware/software engineer at a big tech company, but man do I still enjoy working on vids and other creative endeavors, and since I kind of set myself up to learn so much about all the aspects of production at an early age and just kept at it, even though I have yet to find other creatives in the area, I have a nice array of knowledge that allows me to create content with my current restrictions. I guess at the end of the day, if you play around long enough in this space, just like with anything, you'll find what you like most, what you keep coming back to, and you'll understand more about what you want for yourself and will act upon that by continuously trying to learn what is necessary to achieve that.

Corridor Kids..ha! I can see why teachers get annoyed or frustrated when students reference them and think they can do it the Corridor way instead. Maybe they should have a disclaimer or something so that aspiring vfx artists know that their roots are based on diy and more of a how to make vfx for youtube videos and or home movies and not the actual vfx industry. Having watched a few years of their content and podcasts, I knew right away they lack the "industry" knowledge you get from working in this field. Working at studios that work on films and TV is a total different beast from what these guys do and it's cool to see that they are finally getting guests that know more about it. I'm surprised they haven't done it sooner. Unfortunately for kids and students who watch and listen to them get the wrong idea though. Maybe they can have another channel where they cover all the crazy stuff you do and learn from working in the field, like crazy deadlines and all the variables that go into having to complete shots/jobs.
@daveweinstock

I don't think you guys are "misleading" any youths, you've done a great job of bringing on VFX experts to explain their craft. I think overall the VFX industry has been pretty shit at explaining what it does and this has led to a poor understanding of the craft... especially on Twitter and other "hot-take" on social media(and even actual Journalists) where they're often completely wrong and what's maddening is they're so confident about it! Dunning-Kruger effect everywhere! The fact is VFX, like most fields, can be extremely complex(as you know!) and for every shot twitter complains about there's 100 that they didn't even notice had copious amounts of VFX. The more I understand about it the less confident I feel in critiquing it. You never know what happened behind the scenes... so many things even outside of the "tools"/actual work.

I have to disagree about something. You said that it’s not as fun or interesting to the audience to see the very technical stuff and I don’t think that’s true at all. If anything, you guys have drawn the audience that does want to see that stuff. You have hundreds of thousands of teenagers and young adults who are interested in VFX because of you guys, but a vast majority of them are like me: they would love to get into VFX, but don’t know where to start (and they’ve found that most tutorials can’t keep their attention). You might think it’s not worth your while, but I think one of the most useful things Corridor could possibly do is to make a Crash Course-style series about VFX in your signature style, combining the technicalities of traditional tutorials with the energy and drive you naturally bring to what you already do. I know a lot of people who have been hoping that you’d do this for years, and I honestly think that you have the potential to give the next generation of VFX artists the push that they need.
