The general public does not need elite level powerlifting coaching or elite level Olympic lifting coaching. The public needs proper and effective strength training/ coaching and nobody has done that on a larger scale than starting strength.

A little over a month ago I stopped in to SS Orlando to inquire about the apprenticeship program and Pete and Jacob (another coach at Orlando) were incredibly helpful and gracious with their time. Both answered my questions and even gave me some form help which has been hugely helpful with my squat, deadlift, and press. Look forward to when a closer gym opens up near me so its not a 2-3 hour drive each way haha.

After I gave up mma due to blown out knees it took me several years including a year of Westside, a year of Cube, a year of 531, blocks of sheiko or Marty Gallagher inspired block training of 8's, 5's, 3's to get my chicken legs back to squatting 335x1 @ 170lb Last September I knocked everything back to 70% and built back up using your LP and switched to a Texas method variant (I compete in strongman and needed to add event training ) but I just hit 370x5 at 180lb of BW. I can deadlift 340 for 5 reps at 57, this was with no coach. I started SS Columbus this week and I checked my ego at the door because I want to get stronger and the best way to get stronger is take care of the low hanging fruit and that is form. So we started all my lifts lower and I am ok with that. looking forward to blowing bast 340 lbs.

I’ve never heard of deadlifting in squat shoes, but it doesn’t sound too useful. Regarding low bar squats, I had elbow tendinitis, too, and I think it was due to my long forearms (I can’t get the barbell anywhere close to my deltoids in the bottom of a press). I had an SSC work with me on that (and I did lots of light curls to get blood to the elbows), but the pain persisted until I eventually went back to higher bar squatting. So, it doesn’t work for everyone, and there are work-arounds. The smart thing to do is probably use a buffalo bar or to put low bar squats in the peaking phase before a meet.

Even with the thumb over bar grip? I've been dealing with a ton of tendinitis from low bar squats, but switched from thumb around to thumb over, and it seemed to have helped.. as far as deadlifting with heeled shoes.. I still can't wrap my head around that one, unless it's only for the hard sole and cost efficiency

I am definitely pro strength. But I think in BJJ I have seen people who are super strong miss the finer points of the technique because they didn't have to do it super correct until they met someone as strong and more technical. Once again though nothing wrong with being strong.
@startingstrength
@startingstrength Год назад
That situation applies to any physical attribute that contributes to athleticism. Fast guys are at an advantage, flexible guys are at an advantage, and strong guys are at an advantage. For any of these folks, they'll have to focus on proper technical execution without relying on their attributes to progress to higher levels of proficiency in BJJ.

( i was very careful with the form ) but before my back pain i was feeling multiple upper back vertebras mostly after doing rdl`s . there can be multiple reasons why i had this back problems but from my experience i need to stop doing deadlift`s . all i`m saying here is that doctors may have a point .

30:45 Regarding the starting position of the clean, maybe I’m misunderstanding your point, but the reason for placing the bar slightly forward of midfoot is to allow a more upright back angle during the 1st pull. Since the weight of a clean is far below one’s deadlift max, the emphasis is placed on being in a optimal position for the 2nd pull rather than being in an optimal position to move a maximal load only to the hips. The difference isn’t relevant for 99% of people who do Starting Strength or even for most CrossFitters. IMO, the only time the position change matters is for people who are actual weightlifters and high-level crossfitters. I think the best solution for almost everyone else is to keep the positioning the same for the deadlift and power clean. I say this as someone who used SS in 2006 to put on size and strength and still have my 1st Edition copy of Starting Strength.
@startingstrength
@startingstrength Год назад
People make this argument all the time, but fail to explain what an "optimal position for the second pull" is and also fail to demonstrate how starting with the hips higher and bar over mid-foot prevents someone from getting in to an "optimal position for the second pull."
@EuropaChronicles
@EuropaChronicles Год назад
@@startingstrength An optimal position for the second pull is roughly the same position that a person would be in if you told them to jump as high as they can from a standing position. There will obviously be variation from person to person, but the optimal position will very clearly be much closer to the more upright position we see in weightlifting than the bent over position in SS. As to the second point that people fail to demonstrate is that no one (reputable) is saying that you can’t get into the optimal position after starting with the hips higher, they’re saying that it’s far more consistent to start in the correct position than to move one’s hips into the correct position during the first pull. Since weightlifters are using submaximal loads, can you demonstrate that there’s an advantage for high-level weightlifters to start with a higher hip position? Are competitive weightlifters missing cleans & snatches due to fatigue in the hips and back? As I previously stated though, I’m not really sure why Rip takes such a hardline stance on this issue. Competitive weightlifters are no more part of SS’s demographic than powerlifters.

A gallon of milk has over 100 grams of protein. That was half of my protein just in that. Got up to 230 at 6 foot. No I'm cutting bodyweight just to see what I look like and I'm not competitive. I'm curious to see how much I will weigh when I get lean and how much strength can I actually hold on to.

@jalander8817 2 года назад
The thumbnail says a lot. Those three guys are very strong but their chest development is terrible. The SS approach does not translate well to chest development. Muscle development is not the end all be all but if you are that strong your body looks strange if your chest lags that far behind the rest of your body. There are untrained individuals with good chest genetics who’s chest look more developed than these guys. Look at some pics of Louie Simmons together with some of the guys he trained. They are just as strong as the three in the thumbnail but they also have an amazing physique.

What compounds things is many guys / gals like you guys who are savvy in SS speak a lot better than Mark. A lot of his views on these items are filled with misinformation. For example, his breakdowns if Westside or Matt Wenning are borderline disrespectful and false.
