This is the exact discussion I had with all the dads on my sons wrestling team when he began wrestling as a beginner his sophomore year and was the varsity starter within 2 weeks. The reason was he could squat 455 and bench 300lbs at 15 years old and he was explosive with fluid athleticism. By his junior year he had 39 wins with 36 by pin because he simply overpowered people while having some natural ability to go with it. By his senior year he was #1 in the state because now he had technique with the overpowering strength and power. Most of the dads still dismissed the weight room as not wrestling specific, when all we did is train him on the 4 main lifts on our own. As they say you can lead a horse to water.

One of the hardest rolls I've had was with a weightlifter. It took me almost the complete 5 minutes of the round to submit the guy. He had almost no skill, just weight, superior strength, and a will to fight. In wrestling we were taught to shake hands forcefully before the match, to gain a psychological advantage. Strength and training it is very important.

the same here - I have at work person that was training maybe 1 month but ~10 kg heavier + numbers on bench, squat, dl twice or more than me (we are speaking about ppl 85kg and 95kg so his numbers was around 130 kg and mine nevermind :D:D ) and I tough I will finish him 10 times within 5 minutes. I got him on guard but he just plowdered me in place I had no way to resist the force by that short period of time (5 minutes :D ) maybe in 15 I would have him. My expireince 5+ years of nogi - his 1 month and something (but progress very quickly - I think because he can use his body he can learn quickly)

I am glad Ripptoe is discussing this topic... I have always had a problem with women being taught to defend themselves prior to being taught to get strong via strength training. My contention is: the average female being attacked by the average male will not be able to defend themselves anyway, despite having defensive skills because they are not strong enough to display those skills in a manner to protect themselves. A strong female, even without adequate fighting skills can protect herself enough to get away from her attacker. I believe we should focus on getting females strong first, then focus on developing defensive/fighting skills.
@Intrud0r
@Intrud0r 5 лет назад
True but even weak fighting can do a lot for women. Aggression, Reaction, technique etc. So yeah, better to be strong and learn to fight but better to fight somewhat weak than not at all. Not every male attacker is a strong individual and even some resistance can do a lot in some situations.
@georgechristiansen6785
@georgechristiansen6785 5 лет назад
Most women, even if they get as strong as they possible can, will be incredibly weak even compared to an average man. In self defense it is the very fact that even a strong person has weak balls, eyes, ect, but reality is that fighting b ack at all will deter most people and the person who isn't detered will win against even a quite strong woman. All of this allowing for dumb luck, but that favors neither of them.

@@georgechristiansen6785 Not true. I spend a lot of time around powerlifters, and that includes women. Within a couple of years, a woman committed to the right strength training can easily have comparable and often higher strength levels than an untrained man. A 5-10 year veteran is absolutely 100% stronger than an average man. Obviously, their strength ceiling is limited by their sex i.e. an elite female lifter is not going to out lift an elite male lifter given comparable training and bodyweight, but to say a trained woman 'will be incredibly weak' compared to an average man is grossly inaccurate. Given that the huge majority of people don't strength train at all (let alone do it properly), a stronger woman, is a safer woman, for sure.

When I was growing up it seemed to me like a lot of cholo/gang banger types liked to hit the weights as well, so while being a trained woman certainly helps when Ned from sociology class tries to rape you I don't think it'll be THAT helpful when an actual career criminal decides to punch you right in the fucking mouth for your purse Hell, I total around 1000lbs now and I wouldn't mess with 99% of the thug dudes on the BART here in California. Brian Alsruhe did a good video on this and made a good point. Being a strength trainer we are used to pushing against resistance, and though strength is a big advantage in grappling just like anything else, the mentality behind it has to be reigned back sometimes. You can't just "push through" grappling with a skilled opponent, you have to think about what you're doing or you can get easily choked out by someone more skilled who may be less strong. Grappling takes humbling oneself enough to be cerebral enough to use his strength in a skilled way. Also, since most people don't have "the prowler", I've read something in many commercial gyms that are good is the row machine, which if I'm not mistaken is also mentioned in the Starting Strength book.
@georgechristiansen6785
@georgechristiansen6785 5 лет назад
That's a rediculous argument. A strong person doesn't somehow force you to use all of it. They CAN hold back, BUT they won't be lacking when they need it like the guy who lacks it. And every technique is EASIER when you are stronger than when you are weaker.
@341Wittmer
@341Wittmer 4 года назад
There's a reason weight cutting is a thing in weight class related fighting sports- everyone wants to be the largest person in the fight because the larger person is generally stronger. The reason people develop skill is to counter people that are stronger than them.

The thing I learned the most though was the difference between someone that knows what they are doing and someone that actually does. I got good enough to know how bad I was, or at least how much further I had to go to get good.

I am a Jiu jitsu competitor and also have always did strength training. I definitely feel that my bjj skills are more important, but my strength has definitely helped a lot. Technique is your steering wheel and strength is your gas pedal. Strength helps more in grappling. In striking, you can argue that too much muscle is a weakness. Cardio is definitely more important.

@JohnFWitt
@JohnFWitt 3 года назад
My two cents as a boxer... I don’t think too much strength is necessarily a weakness in striking sports. One reason behind the old school thinking that lifting weights makes you slow/worse is because when you’re lifting you need to be very tight, and to box you need to be loose. If you’re not relaxed, it throws off your timing both for throwing punches and reacting to your opponent. That being said if you took two fighters of equal height, weight, skill, and toughness, the stronger man is going to win. So I think the more modern school of thought is that lifting weights is fine, you just need to discipline yourself to get tight in a lifting context while staying loose in a boxing context.
@jakemasters4361
@jakemasters4361 2 года назад
This is an older video, but here's my 2 cents anyway. I used to spar with a buddy from college who was really into bjj. At the time I was still powerlifting: 5'9", 260, 470 squat, 525 deadlift, 330 bench, 260 ohp, and avoiding all other types of training like the plague for fear of losing gains. My friend was about the same height but way leaner, maybe 160 or so. I know it's just an anecdote but this guy always laid me out like it was a joke. Having a 100 lbs on the dude didn't make up for lack of stamina, coordination, and technique. That said, if we're talking two untrained people against each other I'll take the bigger one every time. But give the smaller guy just a modicum of training and it completely turns the tables imo.

@oggsmash9989
@oggsmash9989 6 месяцев назад
@@GodsStrongestKanyeSupporter he won't need the stamina, as his strength and size will go a loooong ways with a little technique to either ending it quickly or making the 160 pound guy work so hard his stamina is nullified. I would also say the process of developing those skills is going to go alongside developing a great deal more stamina applied to grappling, and the stamina comes faster than the technique. So I would say its a moot point. He does not in any way have to match the stamina of a guy at 160 pounds, as his other attributes will balance that scale out a great deal.

Roadwork done properly is not steady state cardio. It is actually interval training when you consider changes in tempo, elevation, and adding shadowboxing. Running lateral shuffles, back pedaling, and doing pivots is also training movement patterns. HOWEVER, continued sessions of long steady state cardio can affect force production.

What's a good program for a fighter in this situation?

I love the topic. Things to consider for those who fight competitively are weight classes, endurance and time. Strength training can put you out of your weight class, mitochondria may decrease affecting endurance, and time to develop any skill and prepare is finite. HOWEVER, for the non competitive fighter doing it purely for self defense, less to consider.

You will not accidently bulk out of a weight class by getting stronger. You can always stop at whatever level of strength you reach before this happens. But....... Why would you NOT want to move up a weight class when you do so because of added strength. That would almost certainly then be one of the strongest people in that weight class. The only possible exception would be if you bulked up so many weight classes that you wete now rediculously shorter than everyone in the class, which is almost impossible. Millions of us have tried to be too big for our height and failed.

@@bobsmitty2119 A lot of the weigh in game is based on the crazy idea that they can gain sometimes as much as 20lbs in the time between weigh in and fight, so they are STILL willing to be heavier to be stringer. I think it matters less with closer weight classes though. Say it's 185 to 225 (pulling it out of my ass). If I gain weight and get stronger, but it makes me weigh in at 186, then even a not so strong 225 guy may still have an advantage in reach and even strength just from his bulk. But if it is 185-195 it wouldn't even matter. A guy 5% heavier is not at that much of a natural advantage in strength and if he is lanky enough to have a reach advantage then he's likely significantly weaker. All that said: I think that many of the fighters are quite weak compared to what they would be if they strength trained properly, so that even a 25lb difference in weight might not make the lighter guy at a strength disadvantage.

My point was that basically the choices are change technique while MAYBE getting some strength out of it or it does nothing at all. IF they were heavy enough to cause an adaption whether that's 1-2kg because you're weak or 20kg because you're a beast, it will still change your technique while using them. No getting around that really.

@@georgechristiansen6785 Of course this is a dumb way to try and get stronger. We agree on this. What I wonder about is the mechanism which governs how hand speed and accuracy are improved when one gets used to shadow box with 1-2 kg dumbells.

Emaciated vegans die of heart attacks. Damn, even cholesterol level doesn't reliably predict heart attacks. Your comment is bs on so many levels. :)

Can left leaning lifters still be strong? Or does aligning yourself with that mindset preclude the kinds of mental and emotional changes that are necessary to push through that last set of five? I wonder this a lot. Do my knees cave because of my compassion for said knees? Does my back round because I gave it too much free shit and it just got lazy?
