If you want to see a *good* Batman movie, watch Batman Begins or The Dark Knight. The list goes: 1. Those two I mentioned (tied) 2. Mask of the Phantasm 3. The Dark Knight Returns 4. Under the Red Hood 5. Year One 6. The first ~hour of The Dark Knight Rises _fifty_ _feet_ _of_ _shit_ 7. Batman 89 8. The last bit of The Dark Knight Rises _fifty_ _feet_ _of_ _shit_ 9. Batman Forever 10. Batman Returns+Batman and Robin (tied) Batfleck is burried under the shit somewhere too.

I love how your "proof" is "here's a list I made". Like...If you had provided reasoning of any sort, fine, but you basically just call something shit and reason it out with "see? It's shit!"

Should've taken a Phoenix Wright angle; just have the character's lack of awareness be played for comedy, that way you still get the exposition while the protagonist gets to be a fun character.

Tximino M that's supposed to be a side character. Like the dumb kid who asks questions like "WTF DOES THIS DO" it makes great banter especially when they misunderstand stuff and fuck around.

I like a lead that is the audience that is also "strong". Most of the best heroes are like that. You see yourself in them but they also drive the story.

That's too bad that Jake didn't get translated well from book to film. In the book he's really funny and interesting, at one point before he even meets the Peculiars he actually starts crying, so yeah, he's supposed to be a well rounded character.

As a fan of the book, I'm disappointed with the ending. The book does not end that way, which leads to the two other sequels. I don't know how they will make sequel for the movie (not that they said they will), but the ending was just too bland.

as also a fan of the book i like they didnt leave the movie on a cliffhanger. i mean..it would just SUCK after waiting two years to see this movie only to end it with them going off in the boat. Burton isnt the kind of director to do a series. right from the trailers alone you knew it wouldnt follow the book. you have look at it as its own separate thing. i guess thats why i was able to enjoy it. the eyeball eating though just PFFFFFT silly and gory. truly Tim Burton.
@iluvbigbangvip4eva
@iluvbigbangvip4eva 8 лет назад

wara I thought it wrapped up neatly. I guess it also stems from the fact I always wanted a happier ending... Poor jacob has gone through so much hell. :( though yeah it was anti climatic... if you didnt like it I understand completely. Could have done it a million different ways but,eh, that's what they went with. x-o

I really feel the film could have been so much more. It's like they had this beautiful juicy orange and they told people to eat the peeling. Burton didn't do badly, but he didn't bring the right tone. And obviously the writing was weaker than Burton in this case. Bah.
@NaiveMelly
@NaiveMelly 8 лет назад
eh, in all honesty I felt the book had some of the same problems the movie did. Two dull protags and a scatterbrained plot. Which I thought was a shame seeing as the first act of the book did a great job of setting up the mystery and the idea of writing a book around a set of creepy old photos is an interesting one.
@thinhvo3893

Jacob Portman is an interesting character that get better and better as the book go on. He is exactly how Harry Potter was in the first book (I read both) curious and intrigued with everything. The second book is where his character progress. The only difference between two of these characters is that Harry Potter is almost prodigy while Jacob is not. If you think Jacob Portman is boring then you might as well think Harry Potter is also bland because there is barely any differences between them(not meant to be taken as offensive just stating an opinion). Emma Bloom however is really dull in the first book. She get horny for Jacob because he look like his grandfather. Serve as a great love interest but not a great character. However her story get better and better in the sequel where she stop being horny and actually do shit. I don't know how the movie portray them but the book is definitely anything but dull.

They made Emma into this princess-ish, flirtatious, and (quite literally) air-headed love interest, and in service of what? Of making her seem more... demure...? They also took away so much of the creepiness and suspense, replacing most of the would-be-terrifying moments with instances of comedy. And the movie practically ADMITS it wasn’t any good, because it closed all of the (pardon my puns here) LOOPS that would allow it to branch into a series that is serviceable and tell a, if not exact, than a SIMILAR story to the books. It just depends on those people who loved the books (and the actors, AND the directors) to buy a ticket, and once those people (that were hoping for a better piece of content) watch the movie and decide they don’t like it much, the movie just makes it impossible for it to have a sequel because it KNOWS that you will not be coming back. On the positive side, however, I really did enjoy the designs of the Hollowgast, though they could have been a bit more “rotten” and “aged” in my opinion. The wights, for me, looked cheesy and comical, and I DESPISED how they kept their peculiar powers after becoming Hollows. That’s not even close to canonical, and it simply existed in the films to make them appear more threatening. The fight between the skeletons and the Hollows existed more for laughs than anything else. The main character, in my opinion, wasn’t engaging at all... he seemed very bored with the world he was in. What did I love...? Eva Green as Miss.Peregrine. Her, and the Hollow designs, and that’s it. Anyway, thank you for coming to my Ted Talk 😅 If you enjoyed this movie, or if our opinions clash, that is 100% fine! It’s awesome that you found a film that you love, this is simply my humble opinion. Have a great day, everyone!

please read the book its so much better // the book was amazing, it was constantly something cool or creepy or interesting and you just kept wanting to read more and more into this completely different world, and the second book especially really got kinda unnerving and scary but I feel the movie changed so much like I can already tell they took out some characters, switched two of the major characters powers (which was a mistake because emma who is the protagonist needs her fire powers later in the story) and changed their ages (idrc about that) and idk man I'll have to come back and continue my rant after I've watched the movie, but when I watched the trailer I was honestly kinda pissed at first because it felt like a whimsical happy fairy tale instead of a cool creepy mystery anyways rant over

I agree completely. The book is amazing and I truly got peeved off that they changed that such major aspects of the book, but one thing that I have read is that Emma and Olive's powers needed to change because of how the movie progresses. Later in the book where they walk among the ship wrecks to get to Dr Golan, there isn't ship wrecks in the movie that is shallow enough, so Emma therefore needs the air peculiarity to be able to raise the ship for them to walk on and be safe, in the water, if you understand? Also, it is irrelevant if Emma needs her fire peculiarity later in the books, because there will most probably not be a follow-up movie, I have read, specifically because they have changed the movie so much, that there is no possible way to make a follow-up movie which still stays coherent to the book series.

This movie makes my heart hurt, the second I saw the trailer since I've read the books and they fucking ruined it, badly. It's too colorful and child like, it's supposed to be a darker thriller. I haven't seen it but the main love interest girl is supposed to be a fire starter, not the one that floats, she's way fucking cooler than the floaty girl. Plus Miss. Peregrine is an older woman, like a grandma, not a hot Eva Green. Maybe it's good on it's own but they should've called it something else.

Sita Sky I have only read like 2 chapters of the book so far and last night I watched the movie while on my fight back home and even without having finished the book I knew that many things weren't right just from his things were going. The Story was supposed to be darker but it was too child like like you said. Was a bit dissapointed tbh with the film alone

I wish riggs found someone else to do the movie.. i dont mind miss peregrines young form but the peculiarity switch was annoying. Not to mention they ruined Bronwyn?? Her whole character was meant to be motherly. Also Olive is meant to be a child and enoch is supposed to be a bratty 12 year old. Hugh and Fiona are supposed to be older and have a sort of romance(which was replaced with the bs olive and enoch shit) PLUS emma was completely ruined, in the book she was this strong badass that flipped the bird and showed no fear. But innthe movie she was so weakly written and had no personality. The movie is like a poorly written fanfiction.

@thinhvo3893
@thinhvo3893 8 лет назад
Exactly. I was like "I haven't watch that movie for like 5 years but I'm pretty sure she doesn't have a choice" Also I haven't watch the movie but Jacob going back and forth because he was conflicted. He has a life behind him outside the loop and he has to care about his parent. He also feel like he was being used by Miss Peregrine. And his love interest only love him because he look like his grandfather (she love him for real half way). At the same time, he know that Miss Peregrine need him since he the only one with a particular peculiarity that his grandfather has. And his parent at the same time, while not abusive and really nice, is a complete failure as a parent. They constantly ignored him and just leave him to a psychiatric and made him other people problem just like they did with his grandfather. So you have this internal conflict going on where he feel alone half of the time.
@perfectlyadaptable
@perfectlyadaptable 8 лет назад
Thinh Vo Perhaps they didn't show that conflict very well in the movie. It was very clear in the book why he kept leaving the loop to go back to his father. While HP has a choice, in the books and the movie they show why it is an easy choice (his aunt and uncle treated him horribly). Something else I failed to mention, HP aunt and uncle know about the wizarding world so they know to where HP "disappears" while Jake's father does not. Overall both comparisons are very poor. But then again I haven't seen the movie and am basing these comparisons solely on my knowledge of the book.

I think the movie wasn't THAT bad. Go watch it and you'll understand why the main character decided to go back to his "boring normal life". Certain things happened because he went back, so it's needed to be in the movie. The visual is great and there were fun moments and some cool action scenes. Asa did a great job as a main lead. The only problem for me was just the writing near the end. Like everything could be explained a bit better. For this is also a time travel movie, there were time paradoxes all over the place and those plot holes I just can't ignore.

"Certain things happened because he went back, so it's needed to be in the movie" Yeah, that´s defined as lazy writing, you just don´t know how to move the plot so you make the character do things he/she wouldn´t normally do to conveniently tell the character the information he needed to know. All the things that happened in the boring side were just plot devices to move the plot, for me that´s just bad directing and writing.

habstein yes, the visual in great, and the effects are good but the story is terrible, because in the movie everything is so messed up and if you read the books you know that the story from the movie is not like the story from the book, and this is why i don't like the movie, and i guess that the visuals and blah blah blah are good but the story.. nah. It's bad, but i guess they couldn't fit 3 books (wich are long, the last one has like 530 pages) in one movie.

Just saw this movie, and it was the dumbest thing ever - even for a kids movie. The "invisible" monsters cast shadows, so why not just throw powder on them, or paint. Problem solved. Also, they aren't arrow-proof, bomb proof, or anything proof. So why - in 1943 - don't anyone have guns to defend themselves? The head mistress uses a crossbow rather than a Tommy gun, a Mauser, a Sten "Grease" gun, or any contemporary weapon?
@claradyson3625
@claradyson3625 4 года назад
you- i- the- you cant throw powder on them because they have 3 very deadly tentacles coming out of their mouth, and they actually take bullets very easily, in the book it takes a time bomb or an army of gunman to blow one up not a couple of gunshots.

I was really annoyed that Hugh and Fiona (bee boy and plant girl) were so young and weird, their dynamic in the book is a lot of fun. Also, the books have photographs in them which were found online and in junk stores by the author! 10/10 books, like a film in book form, they're really visual and wonderful.

THE BOOK WAS AMAZING! I KEPT RE-READING IT! And that was why I was a little disappointed in the movie because it did not satisfy me at all. ~~~SPOILERS AHEAD~~~ Emma was supposed to be fierce, she tried to kill Jacob when they first met, she didn't know that Abe was dead and when she knew she was devastated about it, they didn't even emphasize Emma's relationship with Abe. They also didn't do "Raid The Village" where they all except Emma raid the village which I wanted to see :(. They also didn't emphasize on the fact that Millard has memorized everything and what everyone would do every day in the village. And Emma was sending Abe letters that were inappropriate at the time because he was already married and Franklin and Susie saw these letters and were outraged. The movie was just too short and they could've added more scenes from the book that were iconic. And the little ones also didn't get enough screen time. Jacob and Emma were boring in the movie, they were much more interesting in the book, they would argue about some things and Jacob even snuck in Emma's room just to find out what was going on because Emma didn't tell Jacob anything unlike in the movie where Emma would just keep answering Jacob's questions which was really really boring. There were so many details missing that I was looking for in the movie. But even though this happened, I'm still hoping for a sequel. I just want to see what will happen and the new characters.

I came into this film with miniscule exoectatuons and was happily suprsed. The trailer doesn't spoil anything in the whole second half, the characters were great, the story kept me interested, and I honestly had a great time. The acting from Asa was absolutely atrocious in the first half of the film, that phone convo with his grandfather and his reaction upon seeing him were so awful I literally had to cover my ears and eyes. It (thankfully) got a whole lot better and Samuel L Jackson's character was hilarious and terrifying. He had some great one liners! Of course though, the star of the show was Eva Green.

As far as I've seen on the trailers and stuff (I live in Chile, the movie is not available yet) some of the charactrs were changed or eliminated for the film, and the "going back to normal" is well explained in the book. Jacob has to act normal in front of his father, he was supposed to be recovering from a mental breakdown after his grandfather's death. He was relatable because he was lonely and he led the group at the end of the movie with no more questions, but I understand why you find him boring. I was glad he went back into the real world for a little bit because that seemed more honest to me. Even if I found a cool world like that, I'd still visit home because it's where my family is. Even if his parents are shitheads, I don't blame him for returning to a world he understands and people he loves deep down. At least he went back to them at the end

Wow. Reviews like this prove why Stuckmann is probably one of the finest movie reviewers on the planet (in my opinion). The way he analyses movies and expresses his positives and negatives are amazing. Not to mention, his references and examples are spot on. Keep it up Stuckmann.

Dude, you didn't even mention all the unrealistic shitty scenes of the movie. For example, when the children go through the port loop thing, they got to the amusement park where they all fight the monsters... While this is happening, the people in the amusement park are running away, the music in the park just keeps going as if there is no one that controls the park and would stop the music or warn the people that it is not safe (like it would have happened irl). The police never shows up after the fight goes on for a while and its just a stupid fighting scene itself. There is also plenty of stupid scenes and this is just a badly produced movie.. It deserves a D+ at most

The first book was absolutely amazing. I haven't read the rest, and I'm not sure I can handle it; one hollow gave me nightmares, a book called Hollow City sounds horrible.

Chris, could you create a playlist of all your reviews scores that are A's, including A-, A and A+? The A+ only playlists is too narrow to include other films you really liked but were not perfect. I'd appreciate that immensely. Thanks!

Tim Burton is hit or miss? Nah, he has been an awful director for a decade now. His visual direction is still fuckin amazing but holy shit, what happened to his story-telling? He is basically Zack Snyder.

Tim Burton has lost his touch but still not a Snyder! Frankenweenie was great and I have heard good things about Big Eyes. Planning to check that out tonight.

I actually think the special effects have also been awful in his movies, especially Alice in Wonderland

Yeah, Snyder was never good to begin with. Burton generally speaking, has just been mediocre with the odd exception.

Tim Burton lost his touch, he can come come back, and please don't insult Zack Snyder, the guy is also a brilliant filmmaker, just people don't understand his work, don't birng stupid hate.

+Kal-El fan 49 Snyder is good with many things. His costumes are always interesting and he has flashes of brilliance, especially visually, but I don't think the problem is people not understanding Snyder. I think the problem is Snyder not understanding the source material. Most evident in Watchmen.

The strange thing about this movie is: In this movie, Emma is the one that floats, but in the BOOK, Emma is the one that can create fire. I still don't understand why they did this.

Dang it! I was afraid this would happen with this movie. As soon as I heard that Tim Burton was directing this film I immediately picked up the book and read it. I was extremely disappointed in the book. Like you said Jake is an extremely boring main character. I really hated that the book NEVER mentions the twins! Not once! And they have this really long build up of what could possibly be Jake's "peculiarity"? And when they reveal his "ability" at the end it was boring, and extremely disappointing. When I finished the book I felt empty like I had just finished reading a dictionary or something. I was hoping that they would improve on this story in the movie. But based on your review it sounds like they didn't improve it at all. :(

The second book shows that his peculiarity is more than just seeing hollow. First one meant to be a build up. Second one where shit go down.

thats because there in the second book not the first, the first is only the beginning, it gets much more intense. the third book was my favourite because so much is revealed, that movie didnt even scratch the surface. that whole movie was 3 chapters of the book in the first one :D liked the movie, but books are a totally different story. stayPeculiar

This movie is an absolute insult to what the story is supposed to be. Everything is wrong with it. Btw if putting yourself in Jakes shoes it is absolutely normal that he’s always lost and scared. You of course don’t know this but the story isn’t supposed to be bright and beautiful. T. B. was the last person in the world to direct this movie. You CAN NOT say that the book and the movie are not the same when the book is literally the script, the whole vibe of this story is messed up and makes me angry af. Please read the book if you do, it will change your life. The movie is honestly trash. -F that’s what I say.

For me this film now that you're describing it should've been like the anime "Demi Chan" which I actually saw last year and I loved. The character of Jake could be like Takahashi who's incredibly interested in these Demis and develops strong connections with them while learning about them. Honestly Chris you should give that anime a look it's really good
