From visionary director Tim Burton, and based upon the best-selling novel, comes an unforgettable motion picture experience. When Jake discovers clues to a mystery that spans different worlds and times, he finds a magical place known as Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. But the mystery and danger deepen as he gets to know the residents and learns about their special powers...and their powerful enemies. Ultimately, Jake discovers that only his own special "peculiarity" can save his new friends.

I don't know why they thought the time-loops were confusing... the movie explains them verbally and actually shows how it works. I watched this against the panel's recommendation and I'm quite glad of it. And it seems they can't even explain what the movie was about, which says they were either lazy or disinterested to begin with since the premise isn't a difficult one.

There is definitely an underlying melancholy to these characters. They feel like they can't risk falling in love and they're stuck with each other in time while never aging. For the youngest characters it would be tragically unnatural to be say 7 years old for 70 years. Their life is a purgatory knowing inevitably they're going to be hunted by Hollows. Jake should've brought some assault riffles from Florida and rained hell on the Hollows.

How could the kids survive in the present time for so long? In one scene the girl says "after a few minutes in your time, I would die of age"

I liked the movie. I thought parts might be to dark for kids but the kids in theater laughed a lot. The time travel was kind of confusing but the rest of the movie was pretty straight forward. In a nutshell the movie is about monsters hunting children to eat their eyes. The monsters want to eat the eyes because that makes them more human. The kids fight the monsters because they don't their eyes eaten for some odd reason.

well it is PG13, it's more made for teens and adults. I found this movie really good but I know that little kids would find it scary or boring.

Something like this in Guillermo del Toro's hands would have been great, but Tim Burton should have quit after Ed Wood, because he hasn't made a decent film since, let alone one that wasn't an excuse for his bum-chum Johnny Depp to play dress up. Still, it must be tricky not to be able to cast Helena Bonham Carter to over-act in everything he makes now.
@JaesadaSrisuk
@JaesadaSrisuk 8 лет назад
Memorandom I think that it's difficult to compare the oeuvres of Burton and del Toro because, for one, Burton is far more prolific of a director than del Toro - who's career is littered with promising projects that he either walked away from or never got off the ground. Have you you'd seen del Toro's last film, "Crimson Peak"? I found it to be just as overwrought in terms of storytelling (while being gorgeously ornate in scenography) as later-period Burton movies.

He has made many great films since Ed Wood. Many people seem to think that his last films are Alice and Dark Shadows, which is curious. Not saying you think the same. He has done marvelous works which easily, easily overshadow his misses. Frankenweenie and Big Eyes are two of his most recent works and both are great films that showcase both his vision as an artist and his skills in portraying a dramatic story.

I feel like in a lot of instances critics just hide under the same blanket when rendering their judgements, and in doing so manufacture a contrived consensus that typically jars with the experience of the movie-going public. What is wrong with a film that throws a lot at you and leaves you with questions? If we're looking at time travel movies specifically, the logic behind Donnie Darko was all kinds of wonky, to the point where it had a subsidiary website to ham-fistedly fill in the blanks and yet the theatrical cut at least remains a wonderful film. Why? Because films aren't merely about what they tell us, they resound with us ultimately because of how they make us feel. Like a lot of the comments I've read here, I found a lot to like about this film. In particular the sensitive and deft way Jane Goldman's screenplay dealt with a lot of difficult subjects that affect many young people, like bereavement, mental illness, feeling socially ostracised and not being able to see your purpose or place; whilst ultimately reinforcing the point that despite perceived flaws all young people have value as well as potentials frequently hidden from others as well as themselves. I think its also important to note that screenplays only hit their weight when they're performed well and I thoroughly think this was the case with this film. I couldn't point to a weak performance amongst the younger actors. Asa Butterfield was a likeable protagonist avoiding the pitfalls of coming across as either sulky or bratty. And I don't understand the criticism of Samuel L. Jackson either, which seems more and more like a fashion amongst beard-stroking navel-gazing critics, to my mind he was appropriately creepy and menacing. Also whilst the roles of Eva Green, Judi Dench and Terence Stamp were small, they were all affecting and memorable, each bringing a gravity that only actors of their stature could, making their performances more than the some of their parts. The only actor I struggled with was Chris O'Dowd arising from my own prejudice of being an 'IT Crowd' fan and not being able to disassociate him from 'Roy'. But that's just trivial.

I enjoyed it, definitely not a great movie but still good. When I watched it, I kept remarking about creepy it was, then I realized the only word to describe the movie was peculiar. Samuel L. Jackson had me cracking me up, and I enjoyed Jake and Miss Peregrine. I really doubt this is what they were aiming for, but one of the skeletons looked like one of the skeletons on the cover of the Goosebumps book Say Cheese and Die Again

I thought it was a good movie, but only an okay adaption from book to movie. I see what they mean by the story is all over the place. If you hadn't read the book you would have absolutely no idea what's going on. The book does a lot better job at world building.

Every review has basically been that you get a boring extended Act 1 trying to cram exposition in while hitting YA movie tropes, basically no Act 2 to set the stakes - it having been cannibalized by Act 1, then a great 'classic Burton' Act 3 that left people wishing the whole movie could just be like that.

Let's be honest for a moment, Tim Burton movies haven't been good in a long time - aside from Alice in Wonderland, what was kind of divided among fans. When I heard he was getting this movie, I shook my head and said, that's another potential franchise that's about to be killed.

Just saw this from a Netflix Blu Ray. Being able to pause and rewind at will makes my home setup better. Some of the properties of the time loops didn't make sense like like how long the peculiars could exist outside of a loop they had been in for decades until time caught up to them. When the loop was destroyed at the house where the Blitz bomb struck they were still in 1943 and no one aged as time shifted to present day, which actually makes sense to me, but they said they would age/die if that happened. Another good reason for home video is to go back and attempt to make better sense of things.

This is a fucking *awful* film. It carries none of the genuine edginess or cultural relevancy of The X-Men. Instead it trades one hundred percent on its supposed 'cool nerd' pedigree and all the 'whimsical' cod-Britishness that was left on the edit suite floor after Deathly Hallows finished cutting...
