I think Ohio is a sleeper! Hasn’t gotten as much hype as California or Georgia but is so naturally stunning and has a sense of calm that I really like!

Florida had the most visual impact on stage: With the cover girl (cosmetic) face, the best walk oozing with confidence and the best twirl in an evening gown in the preliminary, she was a total eye candy. And she pulled off wearing two high front leg slits while still looking classy and not at all indecent.

Your recap is dead on accurate. I especially liked your analogy of Utah's gown to Ylianna -- I thought of that, too.

You actually speak really well. I have no idea how you didn't make it top 15 last year. If interview was 60% I don't get it. Yet again Dani, you make great videos. You have fluidity when you speak and you avoid fillers when you speak. Again awesome!

OMG, Thank you with the Stripper heel comment! I'm so over - I mean beyond - with those heels. If you feel like you have to wear them because of your height then choose a gown that is long enough to cover them and doesn't have a slit up to the bits. UGH!

I loved your analysis, pretty much accurate and I felt the same gowns this year from Sherri hill didn't let shine the contestant, we need variaty. Keep going and nice job

I don't know how you aren't talking about West Virginia at all. She is absolutely striking, has an amazing platform, speaks well, was a runner up at Miss Teen USA, and had a GREAT prelim evening gown and swim walk/model.

Kansas REALLY impressed me. I was wow’d by her swimsuit and evening gown performance. Definitely a top 5.

Requiring the ladies to wear a Sherri Hill gown isn’t fair. This limits their personal choice, and prevents them from showing the judges their own sense of style- not fair!!

Agree 100% on Ohio. Understated elegance goes a long way with me. Too many of the others looked "harsh" or seemed to be trying way too hard.

I feel like MD was so natural in swim and I think if she won, she would KILL it on the Universe stage. She would look natural. Her evening gown was a huge surprise to me but I LOVED it, and the purple in her suit complimented het skin very well. I’m also glad she didn’t tan too dark... I didn’t like TN’s tan, it was so distracting for me.

I’m so glad you included Kansas and Ohio! They were not in my original group of girls but after seeing their performances they are definitely on my list!! I really hope they can change their dresses for finals. I really don’t like that they all have to wear sherri hill, they should be able to wear a dream dress at least once while onstage.

I absolutely love your channel. And I completely agree and I even thought the same thing with the clear heels and with the dresses that had the slits in it made the contestant look shorter and it drew my eyes to the shoes and not the dress.

Great insights from a young lady who's been there. I think Miss USA is Texas or New Mexico. I loved Georgia in gown. I love Miss Florida, too, but I 100 percent pray that she will change her gown for finals. Miss Ohio has a nice look, too. Kansas rocks! She can win, too. Wonderful review, Dani.

Evening Gown: Maryland, Minnesota, Georgia, Florida, Nevada, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, and West Virginia. Pennsylvania: Go back and watch her in evening gown. If she makes it to the evening gown round, she will easily move on to the top 5. Interesting tidbit about her placing as one of the runner ups to the current Miss Florida. This shows a woman who is determined. West Virginia: She seemed so comfortable on stage and not as nervous as many of the other contestants. I wonder if the judges noticed. Maryland and New Mexico slated. I liked Texas in swimsuit and a little less in evening gown. My highest score went to Miss New Mexico. My top 5: New Mexico, New Jersey, Nevada, South Dakota, and Maryland. Honorable mention: Pennsylvania, Vs, and West Virginia Miss USA is Miss New Mexico!

I’d like to know your thoughts on the swimsuit choices this year. Just like in your year and the previous years thereafter, I’m not really digging those variations of prints and cuts (some swimsuit styles looked really awkward or meh for me). If only the Miss USA contestants were able to have swimsuits that are similar or of the same caliber as those used in Miss Universe 2018 (consistent two types of cut only with varying solid color choices), I think it would’ve been a really great picture across the stage overall.

Omg- I couldn’t even make it through your entire video before I had to comment! I don’t want to call out any particular contestants, but I agree with ALL your points! So many girls just looked so lost! I had so many favorites picked out and was really disappointed at their performances. I’m going to chalk it up to the production being weird. I hope they can change dresses for finals. I felt the same way about the SH gowns. Very underwhelming, with a few exceptions- but I felt like I saw the same dress over and over. Fingers crossed that finals is better.... because.... that prelim round was not overly exciting to watch...at all.

As always, after watching the girls actually perform, my impressions have changed. Last year I knew after watching the prelims that Sarah Rose was going to win. Prior to that, I had hardly even noticed her. And, speaking of Sarah Rose, she looked AMAZING in pink at Miss Teen USA, and WOW!!!!!! in gold at the prelims!! First of all, the Shari Hill gown rule ruined this pageant. This girls look like they are competing in state pageants 20 years ago. Where do they come up with these stupid ideas? NOT ONE of the gowns in this preliminary show would be competitive at Miss Universe. I hope that the next Miss USA isn’t required to wear a Shari Hill gown at Miss Universe 2019!!! The girls coming from nowhere this year are South Dakota, Maryland and Oklahoma. I was very impressed with them. Nebraska has a great body, and may be a dark horse. Her gown choice was very flattering. A couple girls I found disappointing were Florida (HATED that tacky, kind of vulgar gown), Georgia (she seemed awkward and a bit clumsy), and Louisiana. I love West Virginia’s body, looks and walk, but she just didn’t seem happy to be there. Nevada has posed for Maxim. To me, she and Georgia have a men’s magazine look that doesn’t help them. Minnesota is so beautiful, but that gown was SO tacky. And Idaho’s gown......well......that was just unfortunate. 😱 One observation I would like to make has to do with heels. 1) Stripper heels/big platforms are NOT attractive. They immediately cheapen a look and make it tacky. 2) Toes hanging over the edge of stripper heels are even worse! 3) Take a lesson from the French girls: Iris Mittenaere and Flora Coquerel wore sexy strapped sandal heels, and it elevated their gowns. 4) The strapped sandal heels the girls wore with swimsuits, and some with their gowns were perfect......except that unless they were adjusted, the double ankle straps made their legs look fat (took away the curve at the ankle). Kansas and South Dakota both wore simple gowns that flattered them well. They both wore strapped sandal heels which elevated the gowns. If they had worn platform heels, they would have cheapened the gowns. My Top 15, in no order: Arkansas, Arizona, California, Georgina, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas and West Virginia. I think my Top 5: California, Kansas, New Mexico, South Dakota and Texas.

Totally agree with you about Arkansas. Her gaze at the end was just mesmerizing me. She's gorgeous from face to body and the gown really fitted her, together with her sexy straight hair making it a very winning look for her. Online predictions miss out Arkansas but you love her and I love her too. Also, Texas is my favorite, she is just absolutely beautiful and performed well on stage. Hope these two will be the last two to stand on stage, one is 1st runner-up and the other is the winner,.

Arkansas!!!! She was 1st RU to Savvy at state when Savvy won Miss America. Girl is solid!

I am going on my gut. My Top 15: California Florida Georgia Illinois Kansas Maryland New Jersey Ohio Nevada New Mexico Arkansas West Virginia Texas-She brought her A game with her, and she reminds me of all those 1980's Guyrex girls. Virginia Utah I think it's going to be a great show on Thursday.

I totally agree with you about California’s gown. I didn’t not like the middle piece and also didn’t like the prints that some girls wore. I can’t wait for the final show!

I definitely found myself focusing a lot more on performance rather than the actual choice of gown and swimsuit. There's just not really any standout fashion this year, and it's a shame. Really at the end of the day, it is about presence and ability to rock anything. New Mexico, for example, I'm not in love with her gown, but her stage presence! The way that she rocks it, she could walk in anything and I would cheer her on just by her performance - that's what Miss USA should be. I feel like there were to groups of people last night. There were girls that SHOWED UP with incredible performance, and then there were girls who looked very unsure of themselves. The people that really stood out in performance for me were (not really in a particular order): - New Mexico - Arkansas - Kansas - Ohio - Connecticut - Oklahoma - West Virginia - Virginia - Maryland - Florida - South Dakota - North Carolina - New Jersey - Texas - Utah Also, I am glad that you brought up camera angles. I didn't even think about how much angles can change how someone comes across on screen - especially if an angle misses something (like New Mexico's slit in her gown). Hopefully everything will work out with the cameras for finals! Another note (lol because this isn't already long enough), New Mexico talked about evening gowns in an Instagram Live last night, and she is not changing her gown for finals. She mentioned that technically it's allowed, but she didn't know of anyone changing their gown because they don't really have a reason to. I think what she was trying to say is since they all had to get their gowns from Sherri Hill, when they worked with them to design their gowns, they only designed one and it should be their dream gown, so they don't need to change it.

For Swim: - Group 1: Arkansas, Connecticut, and DC - Group 2: Hawaii, Iowa, Kansas - Group 3: Maryland, Minnesota - Group 4: NEW MEXICO, Ohio - Group 5: South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Wyoming Gown: - Group 1: Arizona, Alabama, Florida - Group 2: Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, KANSAS, Louisiana - Group 3: Minnesota (although I didn’t like her dress) - Group 4: NEW MEXICO, Oregon (didn’t like the dress) - Group 5: Texas (don’t like the dress), UTAH, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, WYOMING. My Winner right now is New Mexico with Utah as first runner up and Kansas as 2nd runner up. Rounding out the top 5 are Wyoming and Texas. Top 10: Hawaii, Iowa, Minnesota, Virginia, Ohio (not in any order) Top 15: Washington, Connecticut, Florida, DC, Arkansas (in no particular order) I ABSOLUTELY felt the dresses were very in the style of Miss America. I usually don’t comment because I tend to agree with your faves, but this time I feel like you were sleeping on a few. My winner is Miss West Virginia and idk why I didn’t hear you mention her. She gave me legit chills in her gown! And my runner up prediction is Miss New Mexico (she was fun to watch, I had to rewatch her swimsuit a few times). Included in my top 5 I have Miss Maryland (she gives me Miss universe vibes as well), Miss Kansas (she just seemed to do everything right to me 🤷‍♀️), and Miss Oklahoma (I’m in love with her sporty look; I was also surprised you didn’t mention her). The other 5 I’d put in my top 10 would be Miss TX, Miss NC, Miss OH, Miss VA, and Miss GA. And I have maybes for Miss FL, Miss NJ, and Miss UT. Lastly, yes the dresses were giving me Miss Universe feels. I also wish there was some designer diversity with gowns. Some of the women I liked, I still didn’t care for their gowns but feel like they were limited since Sherri Hill probably isn’t the best the designer for them. Arkansas - loved her since she was crowned and she delivered. Georgia always loved and she was my only WOW WOW in swimsuit with her face. Kansas - always loved her and did not disappoint. Maryland BIGGEST surprise i agree she looked universe level. New Jersey - was not a fave but she totally stood out to me. New Mexico - she was a perfect vision in swim. West Virginia - i like her a lot. LOVE your review and Sierra Miss Canada - i dont love ohio as u do, or dont love connecticut like she does but they are pretty women that dont grab my attention. California is showing her lack of skills true.

I honestly think New Mexico has it in the bag if she speaks well on stage and changes gowns or rocks the HECK out of the yellow one. Seriously, it's such a dis-service to every girl that they had to wear Sherry Hill! Does MUO read fan comments because we've been saying this for a while! Go back to the old days where opening numbers were by the same designer, but not the evening gowns. Judges want to know a girl-let her be HER!!!

I love the review! I’ve watched this year’s prelims 3x’s now. I usually just do it once. At first I was underwhelmed. Now, I see how strong these girls are. I do agree about the gown “SITCH”! WTH! SH MUST be getting bank for the MUO organization 2 force them into their dresses. A good friend of mine who knows more than probably any1 I’ve ever met about pageants related it to looking like MAO! I think they’re ok, but if they would try that w/ the international competitors, could you imagine the uproar! My friend also pointed out that the last 3MUSA’s to make top3 DID NOT wear Sherri Hill. Most of the girls that didn’t advance to top 5 or above from MUSA, wore a Sherri Hill! I’m not 100% sure if this is correct, but knowing his knowledge base about pageantry, I’d bet my pension on it!

I have noticed that a lot of the girls were nervous. I was surprised about that. I also do not like the camera angles, hope it will be better for finals. Utah's gown reminded me of Texas' gown at Miss USA 2015 and South Africa's gown at Miss World 2018. Loved it. The gowns of New Mexico and Florida was a bit off. Overall, the swimsuit portion wowed me way more than the gown segment. Other years it is usually the other way around. I so agree with you on Arkansas...she was my pleasant surprise! I have to disagree with you about Florida In gown...she needs to completely change that thing for finals night. Surprisingly underwhelmed by Georgia, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania.

What did you think of Sarah's make up and tan? Unless it was the lighting in the venue, but it seemed overdone. Also, can we please get away from Sherri Hill? Besides about 8 contestants, the rest of them were horrid! #missworld1990wantsherdressback

Ugh yes those clear stripper heels need to be banished from the pageant world for the rest of time! Overall I was really impressed by the performance. I loved that most of the girls didn't look very "pageanty," at least from what I saw. The makeup, hair, and gowns were still very glamorous but just more naturally glamorous if that makes sense. I had such a hard time narrowing down my favorites. I was really impressed by Connecticut but I may be a little bias because I've been following her for a while and I go to school in CT. No matter who wins, our next Miss USA is going to be a phenomenal title holder and a force to be reckoned with at Miss Universe. All I have to say is that I am SO glad that I'm not one of those judges because I would honestly have such a hard time picking just one girl, I guess we'll have to see what happens Thursday night!

And as to Utah’s gown. It somewhat looks like South Africa’s 2nd place winning dress at Miss World 2018 Dress Designer Award competition.

I hope they give beauty of face a bigger percentage this year because the last few years, it has been lackluster. No shade, but USA has not been on the top 3 for the last 3 years. 🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭

First of all, let me get this out! Dani, you know darn well who I think and want to win the crown. And she particularly can’t do anything wrong in my eyes! Even though it might give me a bit of a “hurt” when she wins, but I’ll take the little “pain” for the sake of seeing her do some incredible things! I’m just so in love with her, okay! Let’s move on! I think I’ve never heard you be that positively critical with the show in general! Which I respect since you have competed last year, so you have two perspectives on the thing! Yes! I agree that the opening number dresses are just awesome! Those dresses are also Sherri Hill, right? I can remember some of the opening number dresses from last year. I think that it was the teens that got the best ones. I was disappointed that brown was part of the option for the misses. I like the gold on SRS! One of the instances that I screamed last year! I agree with the camera angles. It’s something! But we also had a glimpse of the expressions that the ladies were having last night because of those angles. Hahahaha! The Catriona Twirl! I understand your sentiments. It took a long time for Catriona herself to master her own twirl owing to the fact that she has scoliosis. Someone already told about how she was able to do it. But I’ll give most of the ladies a B plus to an A minus for the effort! Swimsuit! Are this year’s swimsuit sponsor different from last year’s? I agree on your comments! And I think those are so unique from each other! Many have similar style but different color from each other and many have similar patterns but different style. North Dakota is one of the standouts for me because of her style choice which gave her the “sporty” vibes! And that sole one piece swimsuit! It reminds me of the very last time that Miss America had a swimsuit competition. And the one piece seems to be some sort of a salute to the Miss Universe shows of long time ago! And yes, evening gowns! I think a lot of them are stunning! But could you elaborate about your remarks about how some are so Miss America in style? Is it because some of the gowns have long sleeves or a bit of a slim/body fit? I know that you have some reservations on green gowns and how it rarely jive. Any thoughts? As regards to Minnesota, I think she’s making some sort of a name pun with regards to her gown choice. I love a lot of the velvets! I agree with your comments. Ladies like Ohio, Texas, New Mexico, and New Jersey. Never disappoints! I think with the Prelims, some of my pre-arrival picks may have changed. My “Stable 7” can’t do anything wrong in my perspective! If you and Grace’s immediate next successor does well, Montana might get added to my list of stable favorites. As with the others, I think I’m ready to make some changes.

I hope they give beauty of face a bigger percentage this time, because for the last few years, the winners had been lackluster. No shade, but USA has not been on the top 3 in the Miss Universe competition. 🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭

I actually like the leopard on Minnesota because it's a play on her name CAT! I wonder if that had to do with her choice in gown and she gives me Olivia Culpo vibes.

I was waiting for this!! Yesss what was up with the stripper heels, and the leopard dress...I was super confused. Leopard was not a good choice. I LOVE New Mexico!!! ❤️😍

Hard to tell because we do not get to see the interviews, but on prelim performance alone, I loved Texas, Maryland, and New Mexico. Honorary mentions: New York and Oklahoma.
