Synopsis: After ex-communist dictator Enver Hoxha banned religion in Albania, he proudly declared it the world's first atheist state. After the ousting of the Communists from power, many have begun openly practising religion again after decades of secrecy. The unique nature of Albania's relationship to religion has made it a hotbed for missionaries, who since the fall of communism have flocked to the country in the hope of converting Albanian's to their religion. However many Albanians remain sceptical of the mission work; many are fiercely attached to the religion that has been in their families and villages for centuries, and religious leaders are fearful that missionaries may upset the generally peaceful co-existence of Muslims, Catholics and Orthodox believers in the country. ABC Australia follows a group of missionaries in an Albania now free to worship whichever God they choose.

This makes me sick. Religon divided Albania and caused many problems among the people in the country. Hoxha's goal was to unite ALL the people in a nation that worked for their own future, without all the old divides and fueds of the past. That is the truth. Now these god pimps are moving in like lice to recrut these people. Religon caused much harm destruction among the people of Albania. And it seems that it very well may again. The people need to work for a future not pray for one.

the return of ignorance and prejudice!!!,Hoxha banned religion,because in one city some party members ruined a church, and , as the party is the LEADING part of social movement ,he had to avoid a policy of "running" beyond a social event.So Albania became the first country atheistic style. I quit church in 1990.And i am proud of it.

I did, in fact 56.7% is Muslim, 10.03% is Catholic, 6.75% is Orthodox and 2.5% are atheist, the rest being "Other" i.e. unaffiliated. I think I know my research well enough, and this is from the Census 2011. And if you say Albanians don't care about religion then why do you say they hate one another?

If albanians lose their islam, you will eventually be converted to christianity by the serbs and catholics, and albanian identity wud fade away. that is why albanians converted long ago in the first place; in an effort to prevent losing albanian identity.

very funny, but you should remember that Albania went through decades of communism. That 80% that you say is an over-estimate, most Albanians now a days are actually atheist, be they Catholic or Muslim. I know, since I've met many of them, check the statistics as well Mr. Bosniak.

There is much hatred between Albanian catholics and muslims that no one talks about... most Albanians do care about religion, especialy christians. Albania is majority muslim... look at the results of the census that was done in 2011

Ottoman empire was most religious free empire. If you take a look at other empires at that time they were forcing people to convert to Christianity. Either die or live like a Christian. Its true that muslims were privileged, but still nobody was forced to Islam because that is the important rule of Islam.

Hoxha's and later Ramiz Alia's rule was very brutal and I do not condone what they did to political opponents in any way, but getting religion out of the public life was not a bad thing. But, I emphasize it, the way they did it was absolutely barbaric and wrong. I mean, the communists executed people for importing religious literature and priests for baptizing children. That's just plain horrible and inexcusable. Hoxha was too much of a fanatic.

@xplosivelilly First they were not killed! Thats not true. Only priest and that pack (rich people) were jailed or fled. And what you say is ridiculous albania was 1944 when Hoxha came to power, the poorest country. And there was a hell of improvements. And if you want to say that anti-religious teachings make countries poor. Than you forgot that the most religios countries are the poorest. Second yourself friend on mprovements first and then on problems.

Athens used to be an albanian village some years ago! Arvanites (Albanians) liberated greece from ottomans etc. Ali Pasha Tepelena ruled Greece like albanian Muhammad Ali Pasha did! Cameria, Athens, Corfu and big parts of morea were inhabited by albanians for many centuries! You are right greeks live in cities like himara, saranda etc. but much more albanians live in greece than vice versa! How many rights do albanians have in greece which is in the EU?? Its a shame than greece is in the EU!!

Another thing is that before it was easy to know if a person is muslim or catholic for example a name like Hasan, Rexhep , Enver, Ibrahim you knew 100% that person belonged to islamic faith. A person with the name Mark , John , Joseph , Viktor you knew it he would be catholic or orthodox. Today things have changed youth and kids especially muslims have Western names , melissa , Joan , Jurgen , Stella etc etc now you dont have a clue what religion that person might be

albokk1 you are correct with this Albanians have lost their identity and another reason is that after the fall of communism when Albanians left to go and work around Europe they changed their names so that they can “FIT IN” with society.

Nope , i am an albanian "muslim" but i have lot of catholic friends in albania nobody cares what religion you we care more if you are from the city or from villages/mountains areas or if you are from south or north albania. That is what people from albania identify with, "cultured" people from the city whether muslims or catholic or orthodox always stick together against the unruly , rude villagers who are moving into cities everyday. Albania has a rich catholic history, Skenderbeu, our national hero, is known in the Vatican as the Champion of Christ, we've had many prists, many martyrs,a catholic saint and even a Pope, Pope Clement XII.

"Albanians in Kosovo have much more pride" For alot of different reasons , albanians there were always a minority and always threatened by christian slavs , so they kept their national identity very strong. Thats why they tend to be more nationalistic then people in albania are more religious as well but still young people there are the same in my country. They may a little more religious but they are MODERATE , they drink alcohol , dont go to mosque etc etc

no it's not. albania was the world's first athiestic state in 1967, religious persons from all faiths were killed, jailed or fled. If that's the case why albania is so poor and one of poorest countries in europe? it shows that religion has nothing to do with it, it's just the policies of the government

We know that Ancient Greece gave so much to the world.Still you are generalizing all the Albanian.Close with Greeks lived the Thracian etc but still didn't let nothing for the future.We also know that Egyptian civilization gave a lot to the Greeks and so on in "circle" with other cultures.Greek language was the lingua franca of the Ancient word,so the element of assimilation was present too.I can read Varnalis of the present and Sophocles of the past,being no Greek doesn't limited

Let me give an old quote which most albanians live by "dont look at mosques or churches the religion of Albanians is ALBANISM" . In bosnia were you are from you are divided by religion lines , "I am muslim i am catholic" Even if you are atheist if you have a certain name you will be "muslim or catholic" something that albania doesnt have

Put aside childish ethnic and religious condemnations, replete with unholy language...and don't be provoked by it either. You should all agree that sending these half-witted missionaries with their simplistic theology but rivers of wealth to convert those whose religions were destroyed by the State is beyond distasteful. Indeed, targeting one's evangelisation towards other Christians is a violation of canon law. Of course, these kids don't know or respect canon law.

Actually lol you might be the decedents of the Illyrians but it has not been proven. The name Illyria was known to Greek and Roman authors. Illyria was actually a Greek word. If the Illyrians were instinct, so that means that Albania is a new nation with a different language completely different looking people towards the neighboring countries. The thing is not even the Albanians know who they are and where they come from?!

lbanians are not Arabs. The majority converted to Islam relatively recently under Turkish Ottoman rule, and Albanian culture was first solidly Catholic. We Albanians,descendants of the Illyrians, are Catholics from the time of the Apostles Without Catholicism there would be no Albanian people, language, culture, or traditions Albanians consider Christianity their patrimony, their spiritual and cultural inheritance. Albanian people are not very religious.

@ChosenTheOnexxx The only reason that im replying this time,its the need of correction in your "hate language".First a slave or a passive nation could'n keep their language an have big positions in Otoman empire.I hate them for a lot o reason,but at least, a country with few million people stood strong,and apart the formal change of the religion,they did pretty well.We have the Romanian people that for a short amount of times,lost their Dacian language for a mix of vulgar latin.

...no one will come to Albania to really help Albanians. The race is to convert as many people as possible. It goes for everyone that with a smile or a proffessional handshake pretends to profess the word of God, Be it The Christian Orthodox figures, be it the Imams, the Evangelists, Catholics, Menonites, the list goes on and on. Please look at the hands of religious figures! Do they have the hands of a hard working man, even though they preach that work is honorable?
