#14 Good Morning, Toby. Many, Many years ago I wheeled Railroad Carferries on Lake Michigan. I learned from the best! For me, it was a fun experience. And now only one vessel still exist from my times, the SS Badger #43. The SS City of Green Bay was my personal favorite! Thanks and Anchors Away!
Well done ! I love the rivers, especially the awesome Missouri. I was lucky to grow up in North St. Louis County where I had both the Missouri and Mississippi. Thanks Toby for the tour, especially for showing the depth of the river.
Hey Towboat Toby , like the video man, we appreciate you guys on our rivers, I got a place up on the Ohio river right between Louisville Ky and Cincinnati Ohio, I brought a river lot there lmore than 20 year's ago everyone told me them barges where gonna keep me up all night lol jokes on them , them riverboats lull me to sleep all night long, I live on the Ky side but two miles north of the Madison In./Milton Ky. Bridge , I love it so much I built a to 40+ foot tall Lighthouse, if you guys find yourself up that way some day "Shine Me" all the local pilots do haha I get a kick out of it, the Ohio River is about a mile wide there and me being a gulf coast boy made it the closest thing to being home, hope to see y'all up my way some day thanks again for the video
I made a few trips on both of the 10,500 HP boats back when WBL owned them.We ran wide open, maybe why they had to sell out to ADM.I made trips on the American Heritage and the American Pillar.Awesome boats.
Those big ten fives are monster boats . Especially when driving something that dwarfs an aircraft carrier on a twisting winding river with tricky currents bridges and changing waterlevels. Computerized radar and river charts are great. When I was there in the 70s and 80s the radar was in its own cabinet and had a round screen, and the charts were a big foldout book.
M/V Dan McMillan was originally the Jason owned by Union Mechling. I remember when it first came out as the first of the triple screw 10-5’s from Dravo…..awesome, jaw dropping towboat in 1974 - ‘75 along with sister vessel Argonaut (now the Andrew Cargill). I’ve got original Dravo promotional corporate photos and Union Mechling brochure featuring both vessels.
I worked out there many a year. Rode engineer for Alter Barge Line at the end of my river career. Valley Line, Spartan Transportation, Missouri Barge Line, Lurh Bros. , worked for a few out there
Thanks for the detailed info. I’m amazed at the dangerous work you guys do. I’ll bet you couldn’t do what you do without all the electronics. Remember those who did?
Are those MAN the same size? or is the center screw larger than the outboard power? What does she have for gensets? Have they considered installing the forward scanning transducesr? Seems like a good candidate for that being 1600ft and slow to respond. How big are the wheels on this beast and shaft diameters?
I grew up on the Upper Mississippi, my dad was Asisstant Lockmaster #6 can really appreciate this, we never saw anything this big though, the.big ones stayed on the Ohio
Had a laugh when he referred to a "Black" bouy. I remember when the USCG changed the colors late 70s or early 80s I was decking for Agri Trans back then.
Making it look to easy Capt.Toby...making me want to back away from pushing these 15 on Arkansas river and get behind a heavy tow headed s/b above Vicksburg during flood stage...well.... maybe not....
Toby this is your old friend Dr John saw your you tube video how are you? I am doing great thinking about you all time it great to see and hear you your voice again still living in Memphis I see you again to caught up again
I live in Ohio near a ditch called the Great Miami. No tow boats. I grew up in Ky on the Ohio Green and around Ky lake lake Barkley It's not a river unless there are tow boats and barges
