Mist-Covered Mountains, Scots Guards 1950

Beautiful classic tune with a soaring tonality on pipes not heard in the minor key versions of other instruments. Played at JFK graveside and Queen Mother's funeral. From the stereo vinyl album "Scots Guards Pipes and Drums - Marches," one of the only recordings I know much before the mid to late 60's with excellent rock-steady tuning and light, intricate playing by a large band. Uses the old melodic style drumming from before the Alex Duthart era, pipe pitch much lower than today. You have to listen through online compression, heavily played vinyl and 50's hi-fi-stereo engineering, but it's a very powerful band sound. Mostly march-strathspey-reel-6/8 and street- & slow march sets. The recording was still being sold into the 1970's but I've never seen a CD print.

Yes, so you probably know that a slightly altered version of this was played for her funeral procession, a perfect adaptation of the feel of this original with the conventions of the pace of modern military procession. I play pipes because of Scots neighbors many years ago from her times, and the Scottish music they shared with our family when I was a young child. An outstanding RU-vid of the QM procession pipes, recorded at street level, is found at ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DX05mATrOmQ.htmlsi=zrDV1wXnhk1osCAF

I enjoy that series, and this book was a personal favorite of mine. The author mentions the tune again, in his book of 2020, “A Promise of Ankles”. “Whenever he (Angus) heard Mist-Covered Mountains, that most haunting of pipe tunes, he saw Glenalmond under soft veils of rain. He saw his friend playing the pipes beside him in the ranks of the band; and they smiled at one another, because that friendship had been such a profound one, and we must keep alive the happiness we experience before the world closes in on us.” Amen (added by me.) Who else writes like that, I ask?

Fascinating recording for those of us who were around at the time and remember this pitch of bagpipe bands in Scotland from childhood. A sound that persisted through the mid to late 1950's. Thank you for posting these recordings. (Pitch of this recording has Low A at approximately 456 Hz; contrasts with the current pitch of around 480 Hz. Tape speeds of the original recording and transcription to and from vinyl records may have altered the true original pitch a little).

The most moving lament! It certainly reaches the depths of your soul! Heard it played during the Queen Mother’s funeral procession and, now our late Queen. Apparently it was also incorporated into the funeral procession of King George VI and, Winston Churchill in 1965. Absolutely stirring stuff, guaranteed to tug at the heart strings. 🇬🇧💕💕🇬🇧

Thank you for this reply. I play the pipes since 1966, I became able to play all the tunes on this recording in my late teen years long ago, but never a player of any importance to the pipe world. I heard this tune at The Menin Gate Memorial in Ypres some time ago, I already knew this tune for years and it was always my favorit piece. But I could never imagine that it would blow me away as it did in Ypres on that very day. Incredible how the massive sound from so many pipers could be overwhelming and prudent at the same time, it reached my deepest senses. We all make our scapes when this piece comes by Dayepipes!

Yes, but not by the visiting Black Watch who marched in his funeral procession. It was the US Air Force Pipe Band who played MC Mts. graveside, not during the parade. Most of the instruments you heard at that national treasure moment were later burned by the Air Force when it dismantled the unit, if I correctly remember what I heard at a piping workshop conducted by their last P/M Sandy Jones.

Pitch of this is dependable. This vinyl pressed in early 70's many pressings after original I grew up with, I digitized it 1-2 years ago on a direct drive turntable carefully calibrated. There's also my ear which is not quite perfect pitch but nearby. I've seen reports that UK/Brit Isles pre 1939 pitch was A455 compared to your analysis of 456. I've heard 3 pressings of this album that sound the same, pitch is probably right.
@Dayepipes
@Dayepipes 12 лет назад
@braeburn8 I've seen pitch in the British/Irish world pre 1939's 440 standardization cited at around A=455; 459 was cited by Seamus MacNeil for Highland bagpipes somewhat later in the 50's I think. We should probably accept this pitch. So much about this presentation is astonishing, even to some few of us who can do the finger work at the same level: drone tone; drum head pitch and drumming style; the easy freedom of incredibly complex playing.
@Dayepipes
@Dayepipes 11 лет назад
I don't understand your first word notation. So far as I know, this recording never survived to the CD and iTunes world, but it was sold new in successive vinyl pressings for some 20 years. So there may be a great quality vinyl that could be digitized for this historic sound to have a future.

The standard "2nds" is for the other part to be noted uniformly 3 notes below the melody 2nd time round, played by some 1/3 of the pipers. In my first contest P/M a lowly Grade 4 contest band in the 1980's, I wrote a 2nds that included departures for moving countermelody. Out of respect to this amazing melody, we played "2nds" 2nd time around on part 1, but 1st time on part 2, so as to start and end with the true melody. Judges liked it.

That's often done. As P/M of a novice Grade 4 band, I wrote a "countermelody" in the 1970's that included some close or dissonant harmony (low A against the B, low G against F), and I arranged it with the countermelody on the repeat of part 1 as ususal but unusually the 1st time on part 2, so that out of respect the original trad melody opened and closed the piece. We played it in contest and the judges accepted it without penalty which was probably my biggest contest surprise ever.
@Dayepipes
@Dayepipes 12 лет назад
Agreed! After 45 years playing, maybe 2 thousand tunes learned to performance standards, if I had to pick just one, this could be it. There was a motion picture technology in the 1950's using 3 cameras and 3 projectors on a super wide curved screen in the theatre, called "Cinerama." I always wished there could be a short Cinerama clip of a plane flying up Glencoe down below the hilltops, with the mist covering the tops, and this tune as a sound track. Or maybe film it in Imax.

great tune; somewhere there is a version of this tune played in 'seconds' which has a second melody played parallel to the first. it is not better, but beautiful also. and all this time i thought i was imagining that the pipes were higher and shriller.

If there is anyone still alive who played on this recording, piper or drummer, I'd love to converse with them. As a piper I advanced far enough to be able to play every tune on it; but as a Yank there's so much I could never know about the regiment and the music of this time.
