MISTAKES In Pokemon Red and Blue! 

The sprites were made before the official drawings by Sugimori. He adapted the sprites into the designs we see today.

I still kind of admire gen 1. This really is a small-scale indie game passion project that was completely unprepared to be a world-dominating mega-franchise. In a way, the fact that the world's most successful media franchise started as something so messy and humble is inspiring.

I remember when I was a kid playing (I wanna say) Yellow, and I was facing Erika. The only Pokemon I had left was a level 13 Oddish going up against her Vileplume. Now I obviously didn't know about some of these glitches but I wanted to try it anyway, see if I could beat her, and I actually did. At the time it was so awesome, I didn't think I stood a chance but turns out I had won. Of course, knowing what I know now it doesn't seem as impressive but, again, at the time it did.

Funnily enough in the JP Red/Green, Koffing has its skull on its torso, but in JP Blue (The base for our Red/Blue) it was changed to the head. This is also the reason for the trades saying the Pokémon evolved, since JP Blue has those trades changed to Pokémon that evolved via trade.

Mew being listed after Mewtwo in the Pokédex is just so you don't see a mysterious blank #150 spot after you catch Mewtwo. I'm surprised Ghost moves (really just Lick in 1st-gen, since Night Shade ignored type interactions back then) being *totally ineffective* against Psychic, even though NPCs in-game and the type chart in the manual claim otherwise, wasn't mentioned.

I think cataloging mewtwo before mew makes sense. People thought mew was only a legend and used what they assumed to be its DNA to create mewtwo.

Gen 1. At Lt Surge's gym you will be told that Electric type Pokemon are strong against Water and BIRD types, not Flying. Interesting oversight since MissingNo is part bird type.

Oh! Actually, on the Mew/Mewtwo numbering point... I messaged in to the Pokemon website in the late 00’s and they replied on the website! They said it’s because Mewtwo was created from Mew’s DNA and Mew wasn’t discovered, it was just a fossil or similar. If an archive of the site is up it’ll be in the Q&A section they used to have

Well, Red and Green got to find Mewtwo before they could find Mew, which led to Mewtwo beign registered in the dex before Mew. That's how I always pictured it in my mind when I played the gen 1 games, and the Pokemon Origins anime actually confirms it.

About the super effective move thing: I remember fighting the 8th gym with a level 14 Bulbasaur and the two Nidos only attacked with non damaging moves....so I could slowly whittle away their health and not take a single hit from them. This was yellow btw

My favourite has got to be, that in at least one of the 3 games, inside one of those buildings that connects routes; there is a hidden item you can find with the itemfinder somewhere in there. No problem right? This will lead you to a specific spot where, on further inspection it will tell you that it is hidden on a block; outside the area you can walk in. You know, the black void? The developers likely forgot to remove it and now it's there taunting you outside your reach. You cannot even use hacks or cheats to get it, since walking on the black void crashes your game. Great huh?

About Hyper Beam, it will not need to recharge either if you defeat a Substitute.

You mis-explained the 1 in 256 glitch. When an attack is selected, the game will pick a number from 0-255. If the accuracy of the move is 50%, the game sets a bar at 50% of 255. The game then rolls the number and if the number is lower than the bar (in the case of 50% accuracy, 127), the move hits. If it's higher, it misses. Now with a move with an accuracy of 100%, the game rolls and sets the attack so that if the number is lower than 100% of 255, the result is a hit. Here is the problem. The script says LOWER than 255, not lower than or equal to. So, if the game rolls 255, the move misses as 255 is not lower than 255.

Mewtwo is 150 due to the fact that Mew was considered a myth at the time so they probably used mewtwo to confirm mew

I got one for you! The Cloyster sprite has Cloyster's shell horizontal instead of vertical. I'll have you know, good sir, that I used to be told by my big brother to take Hitmonlee because he wanted Hitmonchan. When I finally got my grubby little paws on one in FireRed, the elemental punches did hardly any damage. It seems Hitmonlee and I were destined to be together (same could be said about Omanyte).

In regard to the order of Mewtwo and Mew in the Pokédex, there’s a few reasons I can think of for it. 1) Mew is meant to be a secret Pokémon. If it came up before Mewtwo, but you had no way to get it, that would be very confusing and frustrating. 2) Mew was added to the game at the very last minute. After the debugging tools were removed from the game, in fact.

red/green had poliwhirl and raichu trade normally in updated version ( jp Blue) they switch them into kadabra and machoke trade

My understanding of why the coding was such a mess is because they didn’t annotate anything, so problem solving was super difficult as they couldn’t figure out what parts of the code were making certain things happen. SUPPOSEDLY that’s why gen 2 had to basically be made from scratch, as all the old code was too much of a mess to decipher

Even with all the issues, it was still revolutionary and is arguably one of the best video game concepts of its day.

Also when you come across a rarest Pokémon about to use a poke ball but can’t when the storage says it’s full, the trio birds when throwing poke balls always says you missed until you put em to sleep, and wrap moves continue without you making a movie so annoying

People say red and blue are broken and full of mistakes and glitches but honestly how many of you found a glitch on your own without seeing it on the internet first.

Talk to the guy in viridian city about catching Pokémon then fly to anywhere in the game roam around a bit. Then fly to cinnabar island and surf up and down. There's a glitch that the Pokémon will show up from your previous location especially handy for catching the very high levels from the cave near cerulean and for catching Safari zone/seafoam island beasts.

Mewtwo before Mew isn't a mistake. Mew, in game lore, would probably have only been publicly revealed during Pokedex production AFTER Mewtwo was successfully cloned from Mew. That's why Mewtwo comes before Mew in the Pokedex.

The reason for Mew being 151 on the list is simple; there has just never been any official documents on the species. All they had to go on were ancient tales of the Pokemon, and the existence of a Pokemon cloned from its genes. They had no no way to know for sure what this creature was like, or even if it was still alive in the wild or not. Red's documentation of Mew was basically the first ever scientific findings of the Pokemon. No old wives' tales, no genetic bootlegs- just cold, hard scientific fact.

I thought the reason that Mewtwo was before Mew was because you technically could only get Mew from an event. Since it was only thru events, they would be at the end of the pokedex, as seen there.

Not many people haven’t talked about this, when you go against Brock, when you use Weedles in your team, and poison his Onix, one of two things will happen. When you use Poison Sting, it will constantly miss over and over, and or you will Poison Onix over and over again (Brock will use Full Heal during his move)

I'm fairly certain that Nintendo only agreed to put out Pokemon because Yoshi's Island sold well. No one actually thought these games were going to be successful and Game Freak had a super tight timeline. They probably didn't really have the option to properly play test the game in order to hit their deadlines. It's really no surprise there are so many errors in the games. I think it also ads a lot of charm to the gameplay.

Hey PaPaSea, have you heard of an... Alternate Universe Gen 1 game called Perfect Red and Blue? They're pretty much Gen 1 with a lot of bugfixes, most notably fixing the dual-type Super Effective thing, the 1/256 glitch, and the Fury Attack glitch, which if the first hit was a Critical, then every hit after was also a guaranteed crit. Perfect R/B changes that so not only does each individual strike has its own chance to crit, each hit is also not guaranteed to the same amount of damage.

Masuda snuck Mew in at the last second as kinda a fun easter egg and wasn’t initially intended to be in the dex at all, hence why it’s at the end. For all we know, they might have explained it away as Mew mutated, and no longer existed in its original form, thus having the name change, but then later decided not to scrap Mew but kept it as the later index rather than shuffle it around (because they love explaining away the way they change their minds on things)

Here's how I see it. The original Japanese Pokemon Green and Red was the open alpha build of the Pokemon games. Pokemon Yellow was the beta build. And Gold and Silver was the final product.

Here’s what I think about Mewtwo preceding Mew in the Pokédex. Mewtwo was meant to be part of the normal game play, given that it’s the most powerful Pokémon ever and was created by man. New was kind of meant to be an event Pokémon in maybe a future game or something, even though Morimoto snuck him into the games code. Mew, just like every other mythical Pokémon that follows (minus 1 exception that I’ll talk about later), has a very specific and important reason for being at the end of the Pokédex rather than right before. If you notice, every mythical is at the very end of their respective regional Dex. No mythical precedes a legendary that can be obtained within the game through normal gameplay. Celebi is last in the Johto Dex; Jirachi and Deoxys at the end of the Hoenn Dex; Phione, Manaphy, Darkrai, Shaymin, and Arceus for Sinnoh; Keldeo, Meloetta, and Genesect for Unova; Diancie, Hoopa, and Volcanion for Kalos; Zeraora for Alola (Sword and Shield changed it up by having players buy the DLCs to obtain the mythicals for this generation). The reason why these Pokémon appear at the end of their regional Dexes is so that there aren’t any obvious missing entries in the Dex. By being at the end, there are no obtainable Pokémon that you get through normal gameplay that succeed the mythicals in the Dex, therefore you won’t see those missing entries and left to sulk in not being able to fill them since you couldn’t get these Pokémon when they were distributed. It makes the Dexes look complete, even if they truly aren’t. It gives the subtle illusion. The only way you’d be able to obtain those Pokémon now would be to use an Action Replay. I hope everyone understands what I’ve been getting at so far lmao. Just to recap, mythical Pokémon are at the very end of their Dexes because they’re event-based and it makes your Dexes not seem incomplete. Now the exception. The exception to this is Victini. Victini appears at the front of the Unova Dex. Why? I don’t f*cking know. The Pokémon Company threw everyone off with this one 🤷🏻‍♂️. So yeah. That’s why mythical Pokémon appear at the end of their regional Dexes instead of just before the end. That’s why Mew comes after Mewtwo instead of the other way around: Mewtwo was always meant to be part of the game, while Mew was meant to be an event distribution. Hope this clears things up 👍🏻.

5:50 I think your explanation for the 1/256 is a little off. What happens is the game randomly generates a number between 0 and 255 (1 unsigned byte). Then it sees if that number is *less than* a number for the accuracy. The number for 100% accurate moves is 255, the maximum value. The problem is that if you check if it's *less than* 255, then it misses when your random number *is* 255. It should have checked if it's *less than or equal to* 255 for it to work properly.

The pokedex number for mew is 151 while mewtwo is 150 because only very few people were ever going to get mew (glitchless) so they didnt need everyone having an empty slot in the dex just before mewtwo. Imagine how irritating that would be

actually, I think the koffing with the crossbones and skull on the forehead was a mistake and not an anime change. This is because they were below his face in the Japanese Red and Green sprites. Also there's a whole story about the whole Mew thing.

They still don't test their games; Let's Go has the whole, "you used a Full Restore," thing even though it was your opponent who used it, which would have been caught and fixed by any even semi-competent beta testing.

Mew being listed after Mewtwo isn’t a mistake. The Pokédex isn’t a chronological listing. If it was, Porygon would be last of the 151, and Mew, Kabuto, Omanyte, and Aerodactyl would be closer to the beginning, if not the first ones listed.

Maybe more an oversight than a mistake, but the only dragon type move in gen 1 that deals damage is Dragon Rage, which always does 40 damage no matter what, ignoring weaknesses and resistances. So programming in that Dragon is weak to Dragon is entirely useless in gen 1 as using Dragon Rage on a Dragon type will still only do 40 damage. Then for Sabrina's gym, the game tells you Psychic types are weak to Ghost types as a nudge to help you pick a Pokemon to use against her, but the only Ghost types in gen 1 (Gastly line) are also Poison type which is weak to Psychic.

Most of these aren’t big deals at all and most people could play through a hundred times without noticing them. I wouldn’t exactly say the game is a mess because there’s no period at the end of squirtles pokedex entry or the bike shop didn’t have a name. Also the sprites came out before the anime and other officials artwork so koffings design is just its original design. Still interesting facts though. Just wouldn’t say these are game breaking things that make red and blue look like shit.

If memory serves, the Spanish localization was a fucking mess. Like, they were literally just given a list of words with no context as to how they were being used, like Slam which was meant to be body slam, but without the context of it being an attack they went with a door slamming instead.

Jeez, I get tired of hearing "So many percent of my viewers aren't subscribed" in everyone's videos. Yeah, because not everyone wants to see all of your content. Totally not trying to be a dick, but I watch a lot of videos from people I'm not subscribed to. I don't necessarily want constant updates about their videos. I watched the video or few videos that interested me, and now I'm done. In this case, again, not to be a dick, but this video was recommended to me. It'll probably be the only video I watch of yours unless you have another mistakes video on other games. It's not because I dislike your content, it's because I don't need constant updates about every video you upload. I'm already subscribed to quite a few people since it's been years since I made my account. I don't need more content clogging my subscriptions page unless it's something I REALLY want to see.
