Our 2-wheel community has a shameful sub-group of overpass (to overpass) racers that are just about fast but not organized enough to find an airstrip and host some track days. That group is most visible to the public and , understandably, shade the rest of us. So if brothers they be, Dad needs to spank 'em!

@@OldNotDead-Club well...my Dad's parable may fit : " Two bulls stood on a hill top looking down a a herd of peacefully grazing cows. The young bull got instantly excited and blurted out, "Lets run down there and we'll each get us one of those beauties! The old bull yawned and replied, " Or... we could WALK down an' get 'em all". So, we're in no hurry.. could be 'something' else to do when we get to where ever it is we're goin' . 'Maybe something' FINE at the end of th' line'

I am 59 and have ridden 50 years. I find your page refreshing and real. Aussies are usually to the point. I have two 2002 Harleys'. a Fatboy and a Road King. I have a 2019 Sport Glide and am thinking of selling it as I enjoy the older ones better. I also would like to not have a $350 a month payment.. I also like to get out with my RT1200 RT-P BMW. I do enjoy riding my wife's Indian Scout as well.

I bought a Breakout in 2018. It came with a stage 1 kit. V&H 2 into 2, heavy breather and tuner. I did a heap of research on what mods I could do to make it quicker and was sort of persuaded to not go aftermarket as it would void my warranty. I was basically talked into getting a SE stage 4 by a dealership. I got it done by a different dealer. I was happy with the result even though I had to ring its neck to see the extra ponies. It wasn't till I had a loan bike from another dealer that I realised I had wasted my money. This loan bike was a Breakout with a different pipe, tuner and heavy breather and a cam. Basically a stage 2 with a aftermarket cam and it was way quicker down low and kept up with mine up high. Lesson learned, If you have to rev it past 4500rpm to see the dividends you wont have your licence long enough to enjoy being a Harley owner.

You're stage 4 isn't a complete waste, other than the SE cam. Put an aftermarket cam in it and a decent tune and you'll be amazed at how shit the SE cam is. It'll feel like a whole new machine. I'm assuming with stage 4 you've gone up to a 128ci? Speak to APE Gladstone and they'll tell you the best cam for the job!

I am 64 years young and grew up riding dirt bikes, got back on two wheels 6 years ago with a 1200 Sportster. Great bike around town but not much good for longer trips. I now ride a 2009 Cross Bones which I love (especially the springer front end) it has a detachable windshield and saddle bags for longer trips. Like the look of the upcoming model of the Streetglide CVO. I’m not worried about the extra weight, but as a short arse (5’8”) going to have to try it for size. I’ve ridden since I was 22 and I’m in my mid 50’s now had a street bike as my first bike and now own a sport bike looking at getting a Harley touring style bike because riding cross country has been on my bucket list since my first bike. Both versions are fun. The biggest thing I’ve learned is it isn’t how fast you go but how well you stop. We all look the same in the morgue………dead. Let’s stay upright and enjoying what we love…….go get a ride in

I don't ride a motorcycle to "look the part". I ride because I enjoy it. I had an accident 3 months ago where a car cut me off and had no way of avoiding a collision. Luckily (that day) I was wearing my full face helmet and thankful that I did. Had I been wearing one of my half helmets (to "look cool"), I would have likely had my jaw broken in addition to my collarbone and 6 ribs. I am glad to have made it out alive and be able to ride again, but I will only go "so far" to look the part.

I agree 100%. I Ride a V-ROD Muscle so a full-face helmet looks natural, but even when I test rode a 2017 Fat Boy, I wore my own full-face helmet. I think my face is important enough to protect from grinding on asphalt or smashing into solid objects from a potential crash.

I’m buying a Harley not because I want to conform or look cool, but simply because I like the look and sound of it. Being social because of what I choose to ride means less than zero. In fact I prefer to ride alone. Seen too many so called “riders” do stupid shit and that I don’t want to be associated with. Oh and you also won’t see me in Harley gear or accessories. A bunch of over priced garbage and I won’t be giving HD free advertising.

Biggest waste was also my biggest buying mistake. First Harley … after 15 years of not riding due to financial reasons and being jammed up for a few years so to speak. I got a bike based off of how I used to ride.. speed, distance, types of roads .. etc. didn’t take any of that into account bc I didn’t KNOW how somehow I changed as a rider a lot even with that big gape in time. I got a used fatboy. 5k miles .. 2009. Had what I wanted on it .. full VH exhaust, LED headlight, etc. Tires looked really new .. mistake .. didn’t read the manufacturer date. They sold me a bike with 7 yr old tires. Looked fine but after 2 weeks of rockin the hwys in the heat .. started to crack. I landed up on hwys a lot. Riding further and faster.. bad posture for me .. bad back …. So 3 months later I traded it for a stupid deal of a 2019 Road King. $15k. 4K miles. Put 25k on it in 2 years. This year I upgraded to the 2023 Road Glide standard. The forever bike. It’s perfect. But that first Harley prob cost me $7k of wasted loot. But I didn’t want to jump on a shiny Road King when 15 years off the saddle. But sometimes u can’t tell til u get into it. *I had that same fatboy LO u had VH pipes … sooooo loud! Ole lady hated that bike lol.

I bought a brand new 2016 CVO Pro Street Breakout. At the time it was the correct choice for me. I used it mainly for day rides around the Adelaide Hills. I absolutely love it still and will never sell it. But now I am married and the wife likes to get out for a ride as much as I do. We are moving up to the Pilbara where the rides will be longer and on more open roads. We need a different style of bike that is suitable for both of us. We will be looking at the road and street glides as well as the Ultra.

My list of mistakes: 1: Don’t buy Screaming Eagle upgrades. They aren’t that great. Buy aftermarket. Aftermarket has better performance increases. Ride stock till you void your warranty, save money. Then do your upgrades. 2: Don’t buy cheap gear. You’ll save money by not getting the cheap leathers and helmets. They’ll fit better too. Buy once, cry once. 3: if you’re going to eventually do a stage 2 on your bike. But you’re waiting for your first rebuild. Buy a stage 2 intake to run your stage 1 set up. Better would be a stage 4 intake. That way no matter how far you go with your bike, you’ll buy one or two less intakes for whatever stage upgrade you’re going to do. It’s your bike though. So if you want to buy things for it that don’t make sense to anyone but you. Do it if it makes you want to ride it more and makes you giggle like a tween girl at a Taylor Swift concert. We ride because we love riding. Not because Fred next door likes to ride. If we love the bikes we ride, it makes us love riding that much more. Every day is a good day to ride. It’s just some days riding are better than others. But it’s never a bad day. Except when it snows. Those days suck.😂

I have a 2005 Fatboy and love it. Agree with most of what you said but not the clothing part. I wear what I like and dont care what others think is cool or not. I dont go riding to have people think I am cool I ride because I love the feeling it gives me. If others think I have the wrong jacket or gloves or whatever thats there issue not mine. When you look at my Sportster with duct tape upholstery and it's faded paint and rust here and there it has the patina of age and it shows the mileage I have put on it in almost 25 years of riding it. It is what it is and does not pretend to be something it is not. The same can be said of it's owner. When I ride my Ural sidecar outfits to Harley parties it never fails. I am new to the HD clan and have enjoyed my RG immensely in the last 6 months and coming from a dirt/sportbike history it has been change in style and mentality BUT I still wear ICON gear and a full face for the benefits they give me. The beauty about HD and the current trends w MotoAmerica is that the tech and upgrades that were mostly sportbike oriented are now coming to the HD side of things now that the BAGGER racing series have presented different aftermarket possibilities which cross over w my love for sportbikes. My RG is an amalgamation of both sides now, better brakes and suspension along w M8 upgrades that will come this winter, the harley attitude has always been that of an "outsider" attitude being an individual, wear what you wear and screw anyone that tells you what to do otherwise !!

How it looked was never a topic for me. Only the practicality of the bike was a issue, because I new what I wanted to do with the bike and showing off was not one of them. 🤣 So, all the extra part I bought after bying a new Harley was always only for traveling long distance and being on the road for seven or ten day's. Good maintenance was offcourse important, but I never cleaned the bike. Spending the night in the rain during trips is more then enough cleaning. 😆The engine is even a 96CI stock ! 😉

@arlanwade3268
@arlanwade3268 Год назад
As far as gear goes, agreed; you don't want it to clash with your bike, not if you want to look cool. Just make sure it's armored; flesh & bone wins no wars with asphalt. Upgrades are different for the V-ROD MUSCLE, I've done a few, but I recommend 3 to start with: 1) the HD short passenger rest & rack. They match the bike perfectly and are highly functional (especially for the passenger) 2) Replace those UGLY wimpy sounding exhaust cans with TAB Performance slipons. You'll need to drill out the 4 label rivets (replace with stainless steel screws) in order to remove the baffling material from the baffles. These look great and have an AWESOME sound without baffling material. 3) Replace that dog dish looking rear sprocket. I got lucky. I just bought a used 2021 Street Bob 114 with only 1800 miles that has modifications that I would have done. Baja Orange...tank repainted to have the CVO logo in Black. Orange plug wires. Saddleman step up with orange stitching. Z-bars with the perfect rise for me. Stage 2 torque cam, tuned, and black Bassani Ripper exhaust. Sissy bar. AND cruise control! I bought a swing arm bag, LED indicators, phone mount, and will add a Memphis Shades road warrior fairing. The majority of the mods what I would have done that are VERY expensive were already done. The bike rips, and turns heads and is a joy to ride. I don't do alot of extended highway rides. It's just a hop on and get lost and find my way back kind of bike.

Can't afford a Harley. I hate that they have pretty restricted cornering clearance. After watching a young man die on one due to ground clearance issues that was just bloody awful and unnecessary. I've had my 78 shovelhead flh for 30 years now with many mods. Most of these done within the first few years of ownership. Now I wish I would have kept all the original parts. First was a wide glide front end 21 inch wheel and then a fxr rear fender and a 160 90/16 rear tire, tombstone taillight, bdl 3" inch open primary (kick start only). Crome adjustable swing arm, 6 inch risers and drag bars, Santi up-sweep straight pipe exhaust, barebones seat and pillion pad, I removed the signal lights for a cleaner look, the engine is mostly stock except for a cam and electronic ignition. 74 cu in. And other small modifications. It's like a drug addiction, you start with one mod then you have to have another and another in a never ending circle. The only thing that I didn't change was the stock floor boards, they are extremely comfortable for me but I did have to relocate them one inch forward and two inches out to compensate for the three inch open primary. And the heel toe shifter had to go through, big feet. My cool weather jacket is a brown WW2 style bomber jacket with a removable wool lining, zippers for vents in the sleeves and back.

Good video, thanks! I made the Cam mistake on my M8...a power cam (+25 pk). I did not like it at all. It made the engine so much louder, violent, aggressive and jumpy in 2nd and 3rd gear. I tried it for 2 months and then had the original cams restored. Now it rides smooth again, and i love it! Will a tork cam like a S&S 475 make it louder? And will it still ride smooth?
@OldNotDead-Club
@OldNotDead-Club 11 месяцев назад
This is very subjective and hard to answer. My cam has made the bike louder and sound different - more like a Harley. Smooth is relative, all m8 engines are smooth compared to twin cams, which are smooth compared to Evo's etc..

Another fine video. Most of the things you outlined apply to any motorcycle or scooter including the part about dressing up to play the part. It takes an independent soul to thumb their nose at convention and stand out from the crowd. I always have to chuckle at some of the Harley ads here in the States that push the idea of unique individuals choosing a Harley but then feeling the full weight of HOG making sure they dress "appropriately," as if they're going to a posh private school with uniforms. There is a similar approach in some scooter clubs and among riders of all stripes. Sometimes I think only a few unique, rebels choose motorcycles judging by the costumes I see. A few of the details I have to disagree with. Like not being able to wear a full-face helmet in cold weather because of wind buffeting. I've ridden a lot of different motorcycles including Harleys and have never felt the effect you describe. And as a year-round rider, it would be close to impossible to ride without a full-face helmet when the temperatures drop below 40F and further down below freezing. At least not for any length of time. And I've heard the slogan "Loud pipes Save Lives" but I've never quite understood how in practice. I've had some really loud piped motorcycles approach from behind and I don't hear them until they're passing. And when they approach from the front I again don't hear them until they're passing. The only place I can see the notification benefit would be in traffic where people aren't going fast and are packed close together. Maybe. Again, a great video. Even though I don't identify as a Harley rider I really do enjoy your stuff.
@OldNotDead-Club
@OldNotDead-Club Год назад
Thank you. You might be correct. I have only tried limited full face helmets on my Street Glide and they were Helmets I have purchased for sports bikes - so it might be unique to the Helmets and their design and / or the Street Glide. You are also spot on re the pipes. Its for when you are very close to cars that it makes the difference - that's the point - that's when its needed. I will try and explain it better next time.

I didn't buy a Harley for image or a lifestyle. I wanted a motorcycle Transportation purposes not as a toy. Windshield crash bars luggage rack trunk just what I need to carry stuff on the bike 400000 Mi on the original motor it is ironic because one of the reasons I bought the Harley which so I would have a plethora of choices for when I would need to have engine work done resulting from the huge amounts of mileage I put on a motorcycle. It has been phenomenally reliable and dependable. Having a Gear Drive and not a chain means I don't have to worry about chain snapping and totaling my engine like you did my 3 Honda motorcycles. I write it in all weathers when I was working. You would be surprised at the type of stuff I could bring home from the landfill tied to the back of my Harley. I actually wore out the front end from mileage. Like a dog that has been rehomed it has been fantastic. No engine work no fancy paint no Chrome doodads just a plain honest regular everyday motorcycle.

A lot of people think that about sport bikes but they are just as custom able as street bikes. You can get a gel seat you can get bar risers so as to not have to lean or lay on the tank. More younger riders like sport bikes because of what Hollywood shows us. Majority of the street bike riders ride for two primary reasons 1. Dad, grandpa had a street bike when I get older I wanna be like them or have them look up to me. 2. You have come to terms that you’re not comfortable laying or leaning on the tank and thanks to Father Time your poster has to adjust to your age….
