Time to dish the dirt on my $50 DIY 3D printer! Some of the corners I cut to stay true to my promise of a printer that cheap were a bit too much I guess... I'll call this the final installment of phase 1 of this project, the next 2-3 parts will be dedicated to making the printer spit out decent parts, hopefully at a much more rapid pace than the rest of my videos have been so far. Many of the issues discussed here I've been aware of for a while, but decided against talking about it in the respective videos as it would have made them much longer, so I dedicated a full video to it instead.

Seems my comment deleted itself when I edited. Anyway, well done so far! Three suggestions that may help: 1. Add G28 X Y to your layer change gcode. That will home those axes each layer and fix drift between layers while you work out the problem. 2. Check out past printers that have used cable/line driven axes. There was a sand table a while ago that used a series of pulleys to pull the filament off the shaft and onto a pulley and back to the shaft every wrap so the line couldn't walk. Said there was no drift. A robot actuator too. Actually, even the Apple ImageWriter and many old Dot Matrix printers used cables with steppers. I think the printers homed every line too. Even some old 3D printers did that. Some had sandpaper around the pulley. 3. Geared steppers have backlash, and those ones in particular were popular for tiny printers at one point. Marlin has backlash compensation built in. You might want to check that out. I know of a few printers that only used those steppers and fishing line. I'll try to find one and comment again.

You combine two major qualities any engineer should have: intuition and a good analysis skill. The leveling knobs are cute. A happy end eventually.

inteesting if you are going lead screw way remember few things 1, triangular thread is ment to have much more friction than square one so lubricate the screw to not get stuck in place 2. backlash will only grow so put a weak spring and another nut floating to remove backlash, because if you start getting backlash it may be bigger than single step 3. use normal length brass nuts instead of steel ones because it is easier to controll backlash and wear when you know what wears out faster. in other words steel on steel friction is no good because both surfaces wear out evenly , only they wear out only in places you move so you end up in wear out spots on a screw and flopy nut while parts of the screw are still fresh, this is where brass nut with backlash nut comes in you get most wear on the softer metal which is also partially self lubricating

use high temp epoxy if you want to be certain - they make stuff like that to "weld" things together. I tyhink you have analyzed things well. I really enjoy your work! Best wishes for 2024!

Great Work, reminds me of my first Printer, a Teebot, where i only got some parts a Manual and no hole was at spec and had to be worked. It's a Mega 2560/Ramps 1.4 printer. It's janky but it works most of the time even after 9 years and 4 rebuilds, Zip ties were my friend when several parts broke and i had somehow to print the replacement parts. A Geetech Prusa Clone was my second printer and since then i use the filament of them, great quality for it's price. Now you got a working printer, keep improving it and reprint parts. To be honest i would get myself a used Vanilla Ender 3, for around $99 without upgrades in 2020, today they are around 80 USD, Ender 3 and Anycube Cobras. Those cheap Printers not realy beginner Friendly. Building your own is a whole other experience and helps to keep those printing. ATM i am rebuilding one Ender 3 Pro as Demonstration Printer for a School (Only have Core XY were nothing is to look at) and i will take other my Ender 3 Hulk and build a Voron Switchwire around it. Long story short, the first Ender 3 pro broke after 1800 hours, it was cheaper to buy another Ender 3 for 100€ new and putt all the Pro Parts on it, but those printers need a rebuild after 500 hours as well. 3 of the 4 Wheels for the Bed were broken after 500 hours ! Since 2014 i am building DIY Kit Printers and improving them, great work creating your own Printer !

The Raspberry Pi Imager tool has a finished sd card image for Klipper. The hardest challenge will be compiling the firmware and flashing your controller, this - i think - is only in linux possible. But with lead screws Klipper will most likely not bring any performance advantages, even though the web interface would still be nice. Your print speed issues are most likely due to max volumetric flow limits and even more likely to minimal layer time. The slicer will slow down to ensure both values.

i converted my 3D printer into a lazer printer ,all i had to do is i printed a hot swappable mount for both the nozzle and the laser module ,so when i want to print i mount the nozzle and when i want to cut i mount the laser you can use Lasergrbl if you want free software , i use a ramps 1.4+arduino mega +Marlin, i use LightBurn since it has support for Marlin directly LightBurn is free for only 30 days but i refuse to pay for a software that i have to pay 60$ just to get an update

My secret weapon for the final refinement of flat/parallel/square wood surfaces is an extra-extra-coarse DMT Dia-sharp stone. It's a bit tedious since you have to brush the dust off every 10-20 strokes and it still gets lumps of compacted wood dust after a while, but a quick wash with water gets it back to pristine condition. And it's only 8x3", so larger surfaces aren't guaranteed perfectly flat, but with regular straightedge/caliper/square checking you can get pretty darn close.

hey man! As I've said in my comment on your previous video. I love your channel. Just thought about any easy way to make the x axis almost bulletproof: You could just nick the X gantry from an inkjet printer, they come with built in belt, tensioner, they a re usually quite rigid, though you'd have to figure out a way to drive a DC motor from a signal that would be used with an A4988. on the plus side, this would mean that you have closed loop control of the X axis, thus eliminating layer shifting on the X axis...

Thanks :) So far I haven't come across an inkjet printer gantry that was any good of its own. But I am planning to work on using DC motors in closed loop control for 3D printing!

I promise, I'll make a video to help with this! I haven't had a chance yet, but it will come! It uses a quadrature encoder, and I was surprised at how accurate it is.

Budget inkjet printers (ans scanners and so) evolved a lot over the decades. New ones are stripped down to pennies. Mechanical motion and structural functions are often integrated in injection molded plastic parts. Sadly, not that easy to reuse.

I haven't finished the video yet, so maybe you get to it later but if you see that your speed is slow even when upping acceleration, then you probably have auto cooling (filament tab) set to automatically slow down to have a minimum layer time. so either change the "minimum speed" or "minimum layer time" or outright turn off the feature. ofc this could cost some print quality

Trust me, I was thinking similar, but klipper is just way better. I have always found kind of hard to understand what to do with marlin, where to edit the proper stuff and how, then to compile etc... but klipper is just so easy. Litteraly. I have been using windows all of my life too

Great iterative design techniques! I wanted those bottle cap vgroves to work! They are expensive. Maybe smashing 2 together with bearings on a shaft could form that inside ring? I mostly finished my CAM program. It's at the end of my latest video.

Making those sleeves with 2 bearings from bottle caps is possible, just a lot more work. I can show how to make one for the video, but really don't wanna do it 16+ times anymore 😬 Hence why I'll let the sponsor deal with them 😜 Thanks for letting me know, I'll take a look at it!

Hey! Don't know if you know that, but i found a thing called 'Capstan and Bowstring' that, as far as i know, is the mechanism used for the X axis. Just putting it here if useful in the future

I love getting this type of comments on my own videos, usually I only see it on bigger channels 😅 Seriously though, the diagrams I showed were just a simplified visualization of the mechanical movement - the whole process from PWM sent to specific coils, to the magnetic field strength that builds up, getting turned into rotational movement dampened by the springiness of the magnets, plus all the various bending and flexing of the gantry until the motion actually reaches the nozzle, is a wonderfully complex system that's really hard to wrap one's head around. A lot of what I explained I only fully understood through the process of coming up with that explanation and the research I did for it!

Wears down the aluminum in no time, plus it's harder to mount the bearings in that 90 degree angle without 3D printed parts. I toyed with the idea of running separate bearings on each side of the corner for the laser cutter, but ultimately the V-groove rollers save a lot of hassle and complex geometry for mounting the bearings.

Damn, let's swipe their warehouses then! 😂 I wonder how they do it though, that means those damn NEMA 17 stepper motors can't be more than 3 bucks even though they sell upwards of $7.00 everywhere. So they have like 75% profits, which is insane 😬

@@ChronicMechatronic 75%, no. Manufacturing is not the only cost of products. The development cost has to be spread, logistics, taxes, the company's other operational expenses, etc. 3 bucks? Maybe 2. The keyword is volume. Just look at electronic parts distributors' open offers: 1 piece = $1, 1 of 10000 pcs = $0,005. This may be exaggerated, but closed-doors deals of millions of parts can be unbelievable, if you're used to buy a few parts a time.

@@besenyeim right, how could I forget literally all the companies other operations are living off this revenue, given 20% of my own channel's income goes straight to social security... I do wonder how those stepper motors go from $2 to $8 though, is that really all added by the logistics of distributing it in small quantities? Because of the bulk pricing I try to buy things in quantity whenever possible to spread the cost. Even just a set of 10 A4988's is definitely worth it over a single one.

I will ask something, when I do something with these motors, cnc etc., there is a rattling from the motors, how did you solve this problem, for example, when I do left and right on an x-axis, there is a click during the brass and the calibration is broken, please help

I'm afraid I need more details to be able to help. I assume you have the same low-res steppers I used? Those inherently chatter during slow moves due to the large step angle, there's nothing that can really be done about that. My printer makes a lot of noise at lower speeds too. What do you mean by the calibration being broken?

Thanks, people rarely mention my editing! I understand where you're coming from with the "less talking" - my explainer videos are admittedly very dense by nature, due to me trying to fully explain the topic so nobody gets left behind. It might not be for everyone. My build videos are better in that regard though, and I am trying to slowly move away from talking so much because coming up with these dense explanations is pretty exhausting for me too!

I can buy NEMA 17 motors for around 1 to 3 dollar (70 to 200tk in my country) from a junk shop nearby But I don't have the nessesary components and budget to build a printer 😅

lol Linux, tell me about it. I typed a million commands I didnt understand in terminal to setup a esp32 development environment then got an error. Thankfully there was another magical terminal command that fixed that error but had no idea what i was doing and it didnt give me much confidense my system would last without have to reinstall everything sooner or later after typing in the wrong command.

Haha no worries, theres no chance I'd spend that kind of money on a 3D printer! 😂 The star is actually an origami star made from paper. It's true I have another printer, but it's the SP5 from my "review" on Halloween and since then I haven't printed much on that either. It's safe to say, if I hadn't decided on a whim to build this wooden one which kind of derailed into this whole saga, I would still be as happy without a 3D printer as before 😅

While Klipper is nice, it should NOT be on each and every printer. Everyone seems to have gone Klipper Krazy, and honestly, it's not even beneficial to most the printers people want to see it on. I support your choice to NOT put klipper on it. Until you see a need for it - stick with Marlin, because honestly most people don't realize just how much Marlin has - most the things people say you 'need' Klipper for... Marlin 2 supports....

Thank you :) There's definitely a lot of hype around Klipper, I think the average Joe probably won't even notice the difference - I certainly wouldn't, that's for sure. I also saw something called input shaping in the menus of the TwoTrees SP-5, no idea if that's the same thing Klipper does though

But what's the upside of using marlin? I get that it can do almost everything klipper can, and more, and that klipper is not fundamentally better. But why not use klipper if it works too?

@@amogusenjoyer to me the advantage of Marlin is that, unlike Klipper, I can easily use it being familiar with GRBL. With so much of my time being taken up by making the videos I kinda need to spend as little time figuring out how to actually do things as possible, or else I'll get even fewer videos done...

@@ChronicMechatronic ohhhh I didn't know that! I'm not familiar with marlin but that makes a lot of sense. Klipper is fun but just actually making stuff like you do is even more fun , instead of having to learn something for no reason😅

@@amogusenjoyer I don't mind learning stuff, I actually quite enjoy it and do so with almost every video, but with my primary objective being to make videos, I can't really spend days or weeks trying to figure out something I've never done before just for a 5 second remark, because that's all time I don't spend working on the actual video itself... I'm already slow and inefficient enough as is. Plus I genuinely loose interest as soon as something works for what I need it to do - which Marlin does 😂
