One mistake i make is not making an outline. If you're reading this, a quick reminder never to give up, keep being you, stay safe, and I sincerely pray all your dreams to come true, as much as I pray my RU-vid dream come true 🙏🏾💗
Hey small youtuber! 👋 I know that you are trying hard and your best and there are days that you really want to give up and noone sees your effort but stay in the game! Winners are dreamers that never give up! 🥂
I totally agree, I hate when small youtubers spend the whole 1-2 minutes talking about engagement when I don't even know if I get any value from the video yet!!! I stopped doing that and it's changed my performance a lot. Also I clap when I make a mistake or just pause and I can edit using the audio peaks and lows!
My top mistake is trying to be TOO structured! It's the Virgo in me yall.....I definitely need to not be so planned out and have a little more fun with my content!
Is it just me or does anyone else have an issue with "camera voice" ? Like I have my actual voice, but once I start filming I am either a Disney Channel actor or I am on the Nightly New Broadcast, there is no in between haha.
I think one of the biggest mistakes is new youtubers being scared to express their opinion fully. Im trying not to hold back the honest feelings I have abt the topic im talking about. Thank you, this video made absolute sense to me! ❤️
I studied your channel before I started my channel and the video you made about your experience behind the camera really help prepare you for youtube, really helped manage my expectations! The advice about practicing speaking was KEY!!! Thanks for all the help!
The reason some of us beginners start over every time we mess up is because we really haven't learned how to edit video properly yet. I agree with your advice, I just believe editing is scarier than starting over.
I love how you spoke on having a “niche” .. I am a multi-faceted woman so i found it hard to try to fit myself into a box & limit myself so I didn’t & im happy I didn’t 😌
My channel started off barely getting any views for the first few months and then I changed the way I interacted with my audience and then I suddenly started getting thousands of views! Keep working hard and make sure to stay consistent, you WILL get there, it's just a matter of how much effort you put into your videos. Good luck everyone!
Me too! Everyone says to “niche down” but there’s some other stuff I want to do, like hair, even though my channel’s about motherhood and being a doula 😌.
I heard that. If you want to do a different subject for a couple of videos. Just make sure to upload them one after the other. Instead of doing one odd subject, then reverting back, then going back to the new subject. The only thing I'm wondering though, is what if you only have enough content on that new subject for one video?
I fit into the realm of a “calm” RU-vidr which I also know can come across as boring. I’ve switched things up by changing my environment (my initial setup was me trying to be perfect) to one that’s more comfortable and allows my personality to flow a bit more. I have definitely studied your videos and implemented some things while making it my own. I’m almost 3 months in with being active on my channel and taking in all the tips to keep growing.
My one mistake to fix is stop getting nervous every time am about to shoot a video. I absolutely love every detail advice you gave. Very informative and motivating tips. I also have kids that mostly interrupts my recording time so that gets in the way sometimes of when am actually ready to record
I’m in the experimental phase right now and I’m loving it. Having so much fun and beginning to see growth. Guys remember that YOU are the Magic. It’s the one and ONLY thing that sets you apart from everyone else, being YOURSELF! Thanks for the tips Erin!
”If they like you the will subscribe”. As a new RU-vidr I've heard so many different tips along the way about saying subscribe in videos but this does make common sense! I think I will change it up a bit now.
The point about not restarting when you make a mistake is true. Just take a deep breath and start that section again, but as a slightly better tip, instead of saying 321 clap your hands twice quickly. It is actually far easier for editing as it shows up much more clearly on the audio track (it makes two very visible spikes). It is difficult to remember to do it at first, but you soon get used to it. It saves loads of time with editing later.
Kamo , it's my problem as well, Also If I make mistakes I delete, delete and I say the word SO too much. I have so much in my head and as soon as I turn on the camera I can't remember what I wanted to say. Yes, I write it down but I don't want to sit and read a script because it doesn't look authentic. It's definitely not easy to speak to an audience and get your point across. It takes a lot of practice.
@@Miss_ramokoka I want to make sure I was clear about reading a script. Sometimes reading works. It depends on the content. I think I'm getting better though, because I finally decided to take one of my many skillsets or things I enjoy and make more content on the subject.
The “share, comment , subscribe , turn on notifications” on every video so annoying. I’m so glad you mentioned this ! A lot of us viewers have been watching YT for years , trust if we really like your content, we will subscribe.
My biggest mistake was feeling like I needed to niche down too soon and so now I’m playing with the topics, the style and how I deliver my information...and I’m realizing that I’m starting to get more comfortable with how I like to present information... and the information I present. The Ebrand club is definitely helpful, I did a review on it!
Your video was so HELPFUL! I am stepping back into being a content creator and one major thing I took away from this video is... STOP starting the video over if/ when I mess up. Thank you, for your advice.
It's tough because all the RU-vid gurus say you need a niche to grow really fast on here but you're right about experimenting! I did that for like 2-3 videos then picked a niche but decided to change it up and when I uploaded something completely different this week, my audience responded really well and I got the most subscribers I've ever gotten. We really do tend to take YT too seriously so I love that you spoke on that !
I have to agree authenticity is key, but no matter how much they mimic you just know what's meant for you will be for you. So keep killing it Erin. Really appreciate all the tips because I am guilty of a few of them especially starting from the beginning when I mess up and I've been growing my channel for a while
I haven't started my channel yet but I'm definitely a fan of that niche comment. A lot of RU-vidrs I unsubscribed from have been doing the same videos since like 2012 and it's so repetitive that I don't care for it anymore. Experiment with your videos!
Oh good lawd!! I'm so guilty of the long intros 😂When I sit down to edit, I be like "WTH were you even talking about?!?" A lot of it gets cut😂 Thanks much for the tips 💘 Look at you with the pre-recorded vid, love your grind! Hope the new home is going well, looking forward to seeing your new recording space 💋
My mistakes... procrastinating because I felt I did not have the right look (wasn’t pretty enough) , the right equipment etc... but I’m excited for my channel in 2021!! #roadto1k
Yes! I’ve been a full-time entrepreneur for 8 years, but I’m still very “corporate-like” in many ways. By the way, my sister’s name is Priscilla. Best of luck to you.
I used to start over when i made mistakes while recording, and it always felt so exhausting and demotivating...learning to start from where i made the mistake is one of the most valuable advice I’ve received on RU-vid
I try not to do this, in fact I forget to a lot lol. But sometimes I do it because I'm like...do I need to remind them??lol. I think it's wise to not overdo it but sometimes a brief reminder to subscribe can help. I forget to like videos sometimes until it's mentioned in the video. But I feel you!
I started writing scripts and outlines this year and it’s a game changer! I’m much more confident about shooting and editing when I know my talking points!! PS love how calm you are and not shouting at us super hyper like other “grow your channel” youtubers! ✨
That last part about trying to structure your content too much really resonated with me, I like experimenting and don’t wanna be stuck in one niche right from the start!
I needed to hear quite a few of these points! My main mistake is that I thought I knew exactly what I wanted to do and set these restrictions on myself right away. Now, I’ve taken a step back and am allowing myself to experiment with whatever ideas I think of. It’s creative freedom for a reason, so I had to stop putting myself in a box.
Thank you !!! Everything you said are too mistake I have made ! 1. BUYING EXPENSIVE GARE 2. Wasting time trying to set up my camera and setting when I could have just use my iPhone 3. Not Being yourself 4. Trying to be perfect 5. Not writing out an outline of what you want to say 6. Starting over 7. Trying to be like other youtubers 8 CLEAN UP YOUR ENVIRONMENT!! 9 EXPERIENCE!!!!! On your channel to find your niche do not be so structured 🙏 10 HAVE FUN
I genuinely love creating RU-vid content, it gives me a sense of joy to watch myself grow ,improve and challenging myself - your channel is where I come every time I need to get re inspired 🤍 thank you
1st mistake im going to stop doing is telling people to subscribe, im a new RU-vidr here in South Africa 🇿🇦 and im enjoying it so far. I love you channel 🌹🌹🌹
That re-recording tip is very helpful. Cos it’s a time waster and you end up being paranoid to the point where you are doing a million takes elongating editing process too. Keep shining sis. ❤️
I’m going to take your advice and create an outline for my videos and GET TO IT before people lose interest. I offer a lot of value in my videos but people don’t see because It’s not clear to them why they should continue to watch the video. Priceless content Erin, thank you. 💚
Honestly, thank you for this advice.. so many youtubers said find your niche and keep that up, but when you said experiment phase things, it’s so helpful for my peace of mind.. I’ve so many ideas that not just one spesific content and afraid to make that content because it’s different type of video that normally i do but now you make me feel it’s okay to experiment many different content for my channel..
I appreciate the way you deliver your content. The biggest mistake I do is I talk too much in the intro instead of getting straight to the point. Thank you for helping me realize that mistake.
It is so annoying when I search a video and find a RU-vidr I have never seen before and then they have a long drawn out intro and they tell me b4 I watch the video to like subscribe and I’m like thinking Sis I don’t know you and I literally clicked on one of your videos why the heck would I subscribe to you!? What the heck? That’s such a put off for me so thanks for mentioning that!
Thanks for the tips. I just started filming my first video couple of days ago. I learned quickly that doing everything in a single take isn't going to be the norm starting out. Editing is a life saver!
Oh, my bloopers are completely authentic and many make it into the final video, lol!! I think it shows people I'm not trying to be perfect...because I'm not.
starting over and over again while shooting really holds me back lol, I start over like 30 times then quit. I'm definitely going to switch it up and create more content for 2021, loved this video!
The example of a long intro lol BIG FACTS lol I’ve taken a lot of your tips and seen good improvements in my channel/videos quality! Thanks Erin 💞 I always thought the whole put a call to action in the beginning of the video before the audience even sees what if they’ll like it was weird, glad you said it though! That’s one thing I’m going to change because it just doesn’t make sense 🤷🏽♀️
My biggest mistake was buying all this equipment and I still haven't uploaded one video yet.🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️ Thank you for all the information you have shared. You have definitely helped my overthinking!
I’m loving the experimental phase. I only have 16 subscribers and I like that I don’t feel pressured to stay in one lane. I’m just here having fun 🤷🏽♀️💃🏾
One thing I'm working on is trying to stop feeling like content needs to be perfect. I heavily script my videos just because I'm still not 100% comfortable in front of the camera (y'all should see some of my outtakes LOL). I also want to make sure I'm respecting my audience's time by hitting every point I intended to AND respecting my own time so that I'm able to shoot more quickly instead of drawing the process out. However, I definitely think I need to inject more of my personality into my videos and not worry about being soft spoken/calm/not energetic enough.
I was editing my intro earlier today and I said to myself that it’s too long.. I ended up condensing it but now listening to you, I think I’m going to condense it even more .. haha .. I normally use me being goofy or taking a dance break as my intro.. but I may speed it up or just take it out
The intro definitely! I didn't think it was a problem, but now I would say that it's true... if the intro is too long, people just get bored about the video and leave...
Whew! You hit every nail on its head. The Little Engine that Could...she is me, I am she😭😪 slow and steady...thank you for these tips! I have a video I need to film and it's informative so I don't want to ramble and get carried away. I will try my best to apply these tips. GRACIAS!❤
She has great tips! I feel like there's no cookie cutter way of doing this thing. I've seen many RU-vidrs make all these "mistakes" and still be successful.
@@sherntell yes I agree. At the end of the day, like she said, people will subscribe if they like you (whether or not you remind them.) So, a person's intros could be raggedy but their personality/content amazing. I have to say, long intros and over chatter can be off putting. I never stay the whole thing if the creator digressed from their main topic. I'll watch a 12 minute video in its entirety, if they managed to keep my attention...from the get go! Just be yourself. The right people will stick around
@@AfiKoKo Yeah. I'm with you. Like 3 minutes of just catching up before getting into the real topic. I don't like it. I watch 1 hour videos if the beginning grabs me. Or I just skip to the main point if there's too much talking.
thank you so much for saying that it's okay to experiment for the first several videos. there's too many so called "advice" videos about starting a channel that keep saying that you need to figure out your niche and your mission statement and your narrative and "what am i bringing to my audience" and i'm just like... how will i know that until i figure out what my audience wants and what really clicks with me? to me starting a youtube channel is no different than starting to wear makeup - you won't know which brands you like until you have others to compare them to but you can't compare something you know nothing about, YOU HAVE TO TRY IT.
I love the idea of experimenting and not to niche down. We could be missing out on big trends because we think we can’t do them. We could always niche down later when we find what it is our viewers are looking for from us. Thank you! 🙌🏼
I love what you say about experimenting with your niche. So many times we are told that WE HAVE TO NICHE DOWN on RU-vid. I actually started doing skincare videos but I did this one video on Cardi B's Hair Mask (Four Week Update) and RU-vid picked it up for whatever reason. So then I switched to doing Black-owned hair care brands and doing four-week updates on those products. And I do know now that one of the mistakes I made is talking tooooo much. I have learned I need to give myself points to stick to because I go off on tangents all the time. Thanks Erin!
Definitely hit the nails on the head lol... I was re-recording every time I made a mistake and then kinda figured out during editing it was not necessary 😂 lesson learned ✅
I want to fix taking toooooooooooooooooo long to record 😭 Editing is already time consuming enough😂 Edit: now the actual struggle is keeping up the motivation to do the work 😅😭 Oh yeah I hit 100 subs :) it’s a small step thanks for all the advice 😬
@MyHiPoFro nearing 300 :D Now I’ve run into a new problem 💀 upload times since I do everything from my phone 😅 I guess that grind continues 😵 thank you so much again 😄
Thank you Erin, I noticed jumping straight into the video works for me! Also having good edits to keep people interested. Anything that’s boring I try to spice up by adding music behind it!!!
I don’t believe what she says, sometimes I tend to like and subscribe while watching a video of someone else because I may forget. But I guess that depends on how you feel.
As someone who just started a RU-vid channel, the biggest mistake I find myself making is expecting so much in the beginning instead of learning, experimenting, and seeing what works best for me.
I can totally relate to this. I started in June and I spent the 1st 3 months obsessing over numbers. Now im really focused on improvement with each upload.
I definitely realized my intro was too long it was 10 seconds I shortened it to 5 & ive been thinking about getting rid of it altogether lol. I also noticed that my videos are long and drawn out because I’m talking a lot and all over the place but that’s how I talk in real life 😂😂😂 it will help my retention a lot I think if I’m more focused on the point of the video and not scattered. Your videos are very helpful, thank you so much also for reminding me to enjoy and embrace the beginning stages of RU-vid because this is where I’m able to make mistakes, while I’m still starting and learning and it’s ok to try different things in the process. Thanks girl for some awesome and genuine advice!!
Funny that I’m just seeing this today. I really needed this! I am going to change making everything so perfect. I believe my obsession of making everything perfect is even delaying my start time. I’m claiming that from here on out I will just start my videos and be myself🥰
I’m going to start experimenting with different types of content that I enjoy making! I tried to really niche down to fashion videos but I’m going to experiment with some more lifestyle and vlog videos too!
A mistake I want to fix: experimenting on my channel. I’ve been so focused on a saturated market that I’m starting to feel discouraged a bit but after see this video I’m going to start experimenting more with my channel and postings. Thanks so much Erin!!! You’re the best!!!
I actually watched one of your videos before I started my own channel. From that video I learned some tips on how to position myself in front of the camera and how important that you have a good lighting. In this video, a mistake that I want to fix is trying to redo my recording from the top every time i make mistakes. True to what you say, it is a waste of time. i love watching your videos. Thank you for this one. Kudos!
I was so obsessed with the thought that I needed to have the perfect gear before I start my channel until I finally decided, screw it I could just start with my phone! And true to what she said, the accessories like the tripod and mic are truly what makes the difference!
You know, I've had friends say recently to me, "oh, I didn't know you can subscribe to a RU-vid channel." They are millennials... yikes. So I personally choose to have a CTA to sub near the end of my videos (just in case;))
As a starter RU-vidr I definitely take your advice into mind especially with starting to press record before rushing into the video! Appreciate all the tips & You're almost at 200k Girl! Keep Pushing!
"If they like you, they will subscribe?" Even the biggest youtubers still ask for likes and comments so clearly reminding ppl to like and subscribe works. Terrible advice.
It’s only a reminder so they don’t forget to subscribe or like. I’ve like youtubers for who they are and sometimes I’m not thinking about subscribing or liking because I’m into to video content. As soon as they mention it I do it because they remind me.
I am so glad to come across this comment because I was feeling like pure crap. Lol like dang there are clearly and literally times I forget to subscribe being engaged in the content .
I started my channel 3 years ago and it wasn’t fun for me at the time bc I was too caught up on every little thing wrong or what I didn’t have. I’m starting over about 4months in and I’m having the time of my life bc I’m allowing myself to go with the flow. I don’t have even 500 subscribers yet but I see that as my time to really just be myself, play around, make and learn from mistakes. Thankyou for this video!
My one mistake I’m going to fix is feeling like I have to be perfect. I have 2 cameras, iPhone, mics, etc. Yet I get so caught up in perfection that I do nothing. I’m gonna start with using my iPhone while I learn my other cameras. But most importantly, just getting started. Thank you!
I'm definitely going to explore with what I post! I've only posted once and I started to set this structured channel Idea but now I will give different things a try! Thank you! Also I'm going to cut down my intro time lol.
I tried to niche down too fast. Didn’t really research RU-vid and how it works and got burned out really fast. Now I’m doing the proper research and doing what works for me.
You are right on so many counts. My pet peeve is when I see a channel telling me to subscribe like and comment at the beginning, during the video, AND at the end 😂😭
