An astonishing and rather enigmatic character, with a curious take on life. It is great that, unlike some painters, he found a cult status within his long life …. even if he could not afford his own paintings. Such is the vagaries of speculation.

If as some would say, Lowry is our greatest artist then we surely a nation of philistines. It's not that his work is tedious, repetitive and nieve but that the English hold him to there bosom as some kind of folk hero.
