Didn’t Mitch already say - he’ll play out his contract and negotiate at the end of next year. The Leafs with Marner - should at least be successful during the regular season. Of course everyone should expect another first round playoff exit next spring - typical for these Leafs. 😀
Its been so back & forth Jim with news that comes out regarding Marner, his camp, and the Leafs mgmt. Have a feeling this week may be big regarding trades
Mitch said what his agent told him to say just like he does with all his other clients. Only time will tell what happens. A sign and trade by trade deadline would certainly be more appealing if he is looking for long term at 8 years over only getting 7 in free agency. Comments from either Leafs or Marner camp are nothing but PR
The second I read that they were attempting to extend him I said that is just what the GM always says right before he then says that they can not come to terms so we are trading him just to save face. This draft is going to be fireworks!
I just don't see it my friend. Mitch holds all of the cards and (the big ... IF) he gets traded it will be to a place that's really attractive to him. I can't see even one reason Utah would be attractive to Marner regardless of how much they'd trade for him, or how much they'd be willing to sign him for.
Only thing I can think of is some players like the whole new destination and the first year of an organization in a new place. I really think Marner will benefit playing in a different market. Who knows, but I think it'll end up being Vegas that gets him if he's moved
@@THEHOCKEYSKATEDOWN Very likely he'd be the next Leaf moved that ends up winning a cup (Steen, Kadri, Kessel). It would also be interesting to see how many fewer goals Matthews would get with him not around.
Utah likely needs that star attraction to sell tickets. Having only 10 players on the roster and 50+ mil in cap space last time I looked they could possibly get some good pieces around him. Also detaching himself from Matthews may also up his value at free agency. After Mitch gets his signing bonus he only has a 775,000 salary that Utah has to deal with. I would certainly put that sales pitch past him
Toronto isn't going to get as big of a return as he's actually worth unless their trade partner is trying to get him before another team makes a bigger offer. I think the primary thing Toronto gets from moving him is the cap space and right now that's huge. They can likely get a good first round pick and strong prospect and a team like Utah would be wise to try to make it happen with the number of picks they have and prospect pool. While it's supposedly a dead rumor, we've all seen these "not gonna happen" statements turn ou tto be smokescreens.
Meanwhile back in reality....Marner will command a premier compensation package for his trade return. Production like his just don't fall off the banana boat.

Right maybe a three team deal where Marner ends up in Pittsburgh with Dubas.
I would be SHOCKED if he signed for that amount, If he does theyll be a Mitch Marner statue put up in the arena the next day. Love Marner hope he does take a discount though to stay in Toronto
Marner on 3rd line with Holmberg and McMann just may be a good 3 line punch. Try Nylander again centering 2nd line with Tavares and Cowan. Tavares can mentor them both
Marner and Rielly to Utah...but Utah still needs to uprade their GT tandem...their 6th should not be in play imo, even though I'd love that as one of the pieces coming back to the Leafs. This is Utah's first draft. They need to put a stamp on this draft for their fans! This 6th overall will be the first player ever drafted by the Utah Hockey Team. So, its gotta be a memorable pick imo!! Something solely Utah that they didn't inherit from the Arizona Coyotes. But Marner and Rielly gives Utah an immediate big step up in offence, ST and leadership in the Central Division to go along with a pretty good core group of vets and lots of good young talent coming along side. And they have a boat load of draft picks over the next three years, including 12 this draft(lots of extra 2nds and 3rds) and could easil part with a number of any combination of pieces,... to go with like $40M in cap space...a trade could/would greatly benefit both teams!!! Leafs get $18.4M in cap space minus what they take back in salary plus could refund the team with some good young talent. Dunno if MM would be keen to re-up in SLC though...but Rielly's got 6 years left at $7.5 and would be a great leader at 1LD for Utah with Simashev also on the way. Personally i like Mitch to Anaheim or maybe Chicago....want to keep a trade in the Western Conference if possible. Last thought...Marner for Zegras straight up (on condition that MM sign and trade for 1, 2 or 3 yr extension, still in his prime for another big contract thereafter)...not sure if Anaheim still wants to move Zegras, but if so, with similar staure and offensive skill to Marner and 23 yrs old with 2 more yrs at $5.75M and playing the centre position he would be a great acquisition for the Leafs imo. I also think Mitch(and his family) might like living in Cali and playing for team that is quickly rebuilding young team but also has a bunch of vets. He'd be a tweener between the two groups...a younger older player who'd probably slot in nicely with the newer younger players
Only stupid folk talk about Marner trade instead of Tavares or Reilly. Marner is one of the best players in the league. Lose Brodie, Kampf, Jarnkrok, McCabe, Reilly, Gregor and of course Tavares.
So of all the trade rumours and speculation going from 1 podcast to the next and leaf sites and hockey sites just keep spitting out the same rumour. Why did the Utah trade hit a nerve? or did I miss the other denials from leafs and marner camp. seems just letting it slide like all the others would have been the better option
