Nice deal, Joe! Alas, to paraphrase Chief Brody in Jaws … “If I bought this, I’d need a bigger boat (house)”. No more room in the inn:( I’m a sick puppy and need to do some boat cleaning:)
My Mitchell arrived today. The black widow burst is absolutely beautiful. Flippin' best $199 guitar I've ever played. Nothing comes close. I pulled out my FF Bullseye to make a comparison, and it's no comparison. FF users love claiming how their $200 FF's play better than $2000 Gibsons ... man, the FFSP doesn't even play better than a $199 Mitchell. This is an absolute steal. I'm thinking of getting the red one also ... argh !! What to do ???
This is kind of an Ltd EC-256 functionally and spec-wise and from a few feet away they look fantastic. Just not finished and detailed quite as nicely, but even at $399 it's a nice guitar and probably fairly priced, compared with the Ltd 256 which is normally $5-600ish new and starts out at $350-400 used/good to great condition. At $199 this Mitchell SC470 is a steal and hard to go wrong unless you just get a dog. If you do it should be reasonably easy to get your money back. Mitchell of course is GC's in-house brand with Musician's Friend being their affiliated sister company. Even so you'll often find surprisingly different retail prices for the very same guitar depending on which site you're looking at. It can pay you to check both places.
Not quite right to conclude it's a great "budget" guitar. It's a risky hit or miss buy. The Mitchell MS470 is a discontinued model at this point. The only guitars still being sold by Musicians Friend and Guitar Center, and questionably for full price at $399, are actually Guitar Center floor models. Not worth the headache to find a decent one now. I went through 4 of these, each had very noticeable defects, and I only found a restock that needs quite a bit of work to make it playable. It LOOKS like a killer guitar, but these are apparently made cheap in Vietnam with very poor quality control. In my local Guitar Center the one they had was very hard to play and the paint was exceptionally sloppy.
Wouldn't a clone les Paul be the better deal, like the ones from iyv? As a lefty, a little harder to find deals. Found a les Paul clone on ebay for 140$ shipped open box. Iyv for 180 amazon. Harley Benton has one for around 250. They have a higher model for about 370 on reverb. Are the epiphone les Paul worth it over the clones? They are made in china, and can have fragile necks. They seem to all be very similar in sound and quality from the RU-vid reviews.
@@MrPhotonjockey I've just seen many of them with broken necks for sale on ebay. Still expensive, over 200 dollar bidders. RU-vid has many les Paul neck repairs...
