This was just the tutorial I needed. I love the black border. I am making a blanket for my brother using my dear Mum's wool I have inherited. He likes black, so a black border, grey inner square and finally a small square of a bright colour using the remnant wool Mum had left over the years down the years. My Mum and brother were very close, I think he will be pleased with the gift.
Ina I really enjoy your way of doing mytered squares. I really like the way you work your solid colour and it forms a border around your coloured yarn. Your way of decreasing also forms an attractive line. I have knitted mitered square blankets, but with one variegated yarn, also nice. The way you pick up your stitches is also the way I do it and I think it shows the least. I mainly knit socks so I have got many little balls left over from socks, so all I need is a solid colour. Thank you
Already knitting a mitred square blanket, (not very big yet though) and had been adding white squares at intervals to bring the colours together. Now I want to knit one this way. I think it is much more effective. Thank you for sharing your technique. 👍🏼😍
Thank you so much for taking the time to make this tutorial. I am not a big knitter, mostly crochet, and yet I found this clear and instructive. Love the use of scraps!
This is such a nice blanket and is the first time I've seen a black border between the squares and I love it very much, it allows me to see better each square, love it!
Loved the tutorial, Ina. Thanks so much for the very clear instructions. I will practice picking up the loose end as you demonstrated. What a time saver! I love learning new tips so thanks for this one. ❤️
I thank you for making the decrease easier to understand. I had been making that part more difficult than it should have been, I had completely forgot the steps taken on the wrong side, of the work. I was consistant in my approach, so, the only thing that I did was possibly make the square a little larger than it should have been. I muddled through the finish of each square. I even started one or two facing the wrong way. But again, I was consistent. Knitting is wonderful, I just took it up recently, knitting also helped me to hold the yarn better when I crochet.💖💖💖💖💖
Thank you so much for taking the time and effort to do this tutorial, Ina. I have been looking forward to it, and I have been collecting my sock yarn scraps in a tall vase for this very purpose. Please enjoy the "coffee" I just sent you ...
Ina, thank you so much for this. I have bags of Holst Supersoft scraps waiting to be made into a blanket. Now I know what to do. Thank you, thank you so much. 😘😘😘
Hej Ina, the blanket looks great and all colours really pop when they are framed with a darker one. 🧶 Thank you for the pattern and the good description! 🌼
Thank you so much Ina! I was wondering how you made that and I will have to give it a try. It is so pretty. ❤ Would like to see how you do your socks someday.🧶
Thank you so much Ina! I have admired your blanket and now I can make one for myself! So many helpful hints. I really like the idea of using a soft cabled needle!...off to buy you a cuppa...wish we could sit and knit together!
When you begin the first square for your mitered squares blanket, is your first row plain knit? How do you begin? I’m about to start one and want to make it like yours. ☺️
Thank you! I have one tutorial planned for how to start. But what you do is to cast on 49 sts with the boarder colour and knit the first square as described in the tutorial.
I’ll add to the thanks! Yes, we have a similar lockdown as you do in Norway, and it started at about the same time. Hang in there! PS... You might not have noticed that near the beginning, said to cast on 39 st, but later on, you did mention “49”.
Love this blanket. Great video thank you for sharing. Just curious how do you do the finishing border when you've completed the blanket. How do you continue the border in pattern? I mean to keep the mitered ridge to the edge.
Hello Ina. I have seen quite a few "Cozy Memories Blankets" on RU-vid, but it remained by watching only. When I saw your tutorial and the colorscheme somehow I fel for it and now Ihave started my very first Cozy Memories Blanket. Love the way you do the slipstitch to give each square a lovely detail. Thank you somuch for sharing and inspiration! Greetings out of the Netherlands. Marjan (Marjanmaakt on Ravely)
Wonderful tutorial! My only question is how do you begin, after knitting the first square (how do you join the first two and then the first three squares)? Many thanks!
Thanks🤗 Cast on 24 stitches, then pick up in the center stitch of the first sqaure + the remaining 24 stitches as described in the tutorial. When adding a square on the upper edge of an existing square, simply pick up 24 sts + the center stitch from the upper edge, then cast on 24 new stitches. Hope this was clear😊
Hi Pam, and thanks for your question. I will pick up stitches in all the purl bumps along the sides and knit a boarder that way. I'm doing a separate tutorial explaining the process shortly.
Ina Is there a pattern for your blanket. This is just what I want as I love the border. I'm just a little confused because you mention bringing the yarn in front which for me means a purl; but there are no purls in this blanket, is that correct. So the decorative stitch is formed because the yarn is brought to the front; however it seems that it's still a knit. Am I correct? I am enjoying the tutorial as I have wanted to make this blanket for a very long time. I especially love the solid or dark border. I am probably going to do the same thing as I believe it finishes it off nicely. Thanks. Mae
How do you add the border on the two long sides? Do you pick up all the stitches on the top on one long needle and knit the matching black border rows?
This is beautiful! How do you complete the blanket with the final piece of the black border? Since you’re not adding any more squares, are you just doing a final regular border?
Hi Linda, and sorry for my late reply. When I'm done with the total number of squares, I will pick up stitches in all the purl bumps and knit back and forth to add a black border on the two remaining sides. I will record a tutorial explaining this quite soon.
Hi Ina it’s Beautiful way to join the squares, I have to ask you I have started knitting mitered squares do I join the two squares and build the rest of the blanket squares?
Tak for hjælpen, Ina. rigtig godt. Jeg er ved kanten nu. Mit bliver ca. 1 m + 1 m strikket i strømpegarn i mange farver, flot ser det ud😉 Det er til min søns kontorstol, så det skal være lidt stærkt og holdbart.
Hi, I would like to know how much of the border yarn (black) that you used in this beautiful blanket. I would hate too run out, that would be awful. Thanks so much for this tutorial!
Thank you for you question, and sorry for my late reply. I haven´t measured the amount needed of the boarder yarn yet, but will most definitely do so soon! I'm planning to write up the pattern, and will state the needed yardage there.
I’ll have to add the black stripe later, when I’ve finished the entire blanket. Pick up stitches in the purl bumps along the entire side of the blanket, and knit 5 rows solid colour. 😊
Thats right! Cast on 49 stitches using black. Then knit the square as described in the tutorial, and switch colour after you've knitted five times back and forth with the black colour.
Hi, thank you for your question. I will describe the process in detail in an upcoming tutorial. You basically cast on the stitches for the first half of the square (24) and pick up the center stitch on the lower right corner of your existing square, and continue picking up 24 sts along the right side.
