the most important thing to remember when working on equipment is to never let it get between you and the door. When testing equipment. You're probably going to have to do most of your trouble shooting while the equipment is live. Live and powered is the only way to actually see what's going on, provided you have the proper test equipment. All you really need for an old tv is a good multimeter, maybe a degausser. Considering the age of the tv. A color bar generator wouldn't be worth your time. Even the transistor models will often have a tube for the high voltage rectifier. The whine is probably a voltage leak from the flyback, but im not there to look at it so im just taking a guess. You can trace audio with a signal tracer if you want to go the trouble. leave the caps alone until they fail. Instead of vacuuming. I recommend 120 psi of air. After 50 years, the particleboard became so dry that it fell apart and the legs fell apart. The problem was the mostly old wooden color TV. I poured a coating adhesive to increase the strength.
