In this video, I try to do a walk-through of my process specifically with this one artist who is having tracks sent up from Nashville studios, and then recording, vocals, mixing, and mastering here at Hopetown.
This video is somewhere in between instructional and advertising.
One thing I don't discuss in the video that I'd like to make a future video about is the overall differences between how analog and plug in processing effects audio. Having both available I feel like I've gotten a pretty good picture of the strengths of each. Beyond recall and automation there's some thing about plug-ins that has a tighter sound, but also smaller. And I have artist who do you choose the plug-ins over the analog gear. What you see in this video is my process which is trying to use the best of both.
 The one piece of gear that was not featured in the video is our 4 BAE 73 EQs. These are in the rack to the right of the API. I love these EQs.
 I imagined people will have some comments about better ways to import tracks lol. In this particular case it's fastest and easiest to make sure that I'm getting the tracks to the pre-assign channels because the mix was basically already done. If I wasn't doing it with one hand and explaining it as I was going, it's actually a very fast process.
Thanks everyone for viewing! ☮️

Cakewalk has - and always did have, back when it was Sonar a decade ago - pre-and-post fader inserts. The now-free DAW has always been ahead of the curve and feature-rich, with all other DAWs still playing catch-up.

Thanks for walking through your workflow. I'm just starting out with my first recordings using a hybrid digital / analog approach (including some reel-to-reel tape just for the fun of it). I can't tell you how much this helps to see how you approach the mix. I still have so much to learn. Hopefully I'll have the chops someday to end up at Hopetown. ps - video was 1080p HD resolution for me, and my old man eyes didn't squint once. Cheers!

Thank you for your very insightful video of your studio and work process. Your detailed analysis should attract people with home or project studios who want that next level sound and mix that you don't get from a DAW and several pluigs from UAD, Waves, Softube etc. I always have been intrigued by the API The Box 2. I think some think this is the magic needed to make your mixes sound better. However its clear that its the main hub where you add all other hardware gear as well as use the transformers on the output 2 bus. I agree with your insight on using 96 vs 44 for the reasons you outlined. As a side note, I had the SSL X Rack with the 9000 Series EQ's and compressors as well as the SSL 2 bus. When SSL came out with their plug ins initially, I found them not any better than other third party SSL plug ins. However once they updated to their latest 9,000 and 4,000 EQ's, compressors plug ins and their SSL 2 bus with the 4X over sampling with the UC1, it was that good. So good that I sold my X Rack as I could now add the SSL plugs in on every track vs just 4 tracks with the hardware. The difference was only up to 5% difference. I also have 2 of their UF8 controllers. I love the Curve Bender and the DW Fern VT-7 compressor which I did a review of. The Massive Passive is another favorite of mine. You got me interested in sending you tracks on a song and hear what your studio can add to the song. Very nice studio you have and I like very much your work flow. I have the Lexicon PCM 90 plug in. I wonder how different the hardware version is. I wish you all the best with your studio. You have an excellent setup and a workflow that makes sense to get the best of hardware and software.

i was very impressed with the UC-1 plug ins as well. I still am disappointed when i run out of analog processing though and have to use them. Its true that the board itself doesn't impart too dramatic a sound. But if you are using premium EQs and comps it plays so nicely with them. its a big expense but... API mixer + API/Neve level EQ/comps is the big console/big money sound. we can definitely try something with you tracks

This was great. Always enjoy your posts. I'll likely be installing The Box early next year. Those H2 19" units have been on my radar, and seeing them as 500s in your Box makes perfect sense. Oh yes... Not sure if it was an oversight, but this is only 360p - kinda squinty for us middle-aged guys! ;) May I humbly request at least a good ol' 720p going forward? Cheers from Toronto!
@hopetownsound
@hopetownsound Год назад
that would be a mistake :). it may be that RU-vid just hasn't processed the HD version yet sometimes when you first post a video it puts to 360 up first. if it's not HD by tomorrow, then I'll know I made a mistake lol. it was definitely a shot in 1080. I love those H2 equalizers! Highly recommended 👍

Thanks a lot for the effort on documenting the process here ! What a cool setup you have 😍 ! I might have missed it, I remember you talked about recall but how do you deal with recalling your final mix if the artists wants more or less of something ? Do you actually print stems or recall every piece of gear ? I'm expending my setup and starting to work with a console and cool compressors/EQ's but recall seems to be the biggest issue I'm working on already :D You're definitely an inspiration and watching your videos pushed me to go that route 🙌!
@hopetownsound
@hopetownsound Год назад
well, it really boils down to the artist. I don't want to sweat recall so obviously the plug-ins are saved, and for the most part I'm using the same hardware on the same instruments so getting it back to where it sounds good is easy. I ask the artist for quick feedback so I can leave it up overnight or whatever. but if its somebody picky who's going to take a while i just take pics with my phone. personally, I feel like just in terms of recalling the outboard gear, the more i work with a mix, the better i get to know it... it only gets better if i have to pull it together again

@@hopetownsound This makes total sense ! It’s kind of reassuring too to read you😊 I ask myself a lot about recalls and how some huge analog/ hybrid studios proceed and it seems there is no perfect way (unless one have an absolute killer console setup that coasts more than a house I guess). Thanks a lot for taking the time, I’ll keep following your adventures here 🙃

Hello Hopetown, in my humble opinion you don‘t need a SSL G Bus. (yes i did listen to your mixes in my Mastering Studio and they sounded great!API like forward in your Face but ☝️ on the brighter Side, right?) So, the G Bus will take away more Low End Information in the first Place (in a good and very vibey way) …and for sure you could play with the Eq Options but….i think what you should consider when it comes to your Mixbus Compression is „it should be on the Darker Side“ ….like a Tube Compressor ….to beef up your low end and your lower mids. If i would Master your Tracks…i would immediately reach out to my Drawmer S3 Multiband Compressor for Instance (The Tubetech is amazing too)… in conjunction with my Maselec Gear to hold your Low End tight. Please think about it and thank you for sharing your great Videos ☺️ edit: just forget to suggest the Neve Master Bus Compressor, this Puppy is amazing on clean Mixes 😋

@@thepanicroommastering2062 Hey there, how do you like the Drawmer Multiband? I have been considering one for mastering also. Do you have it set in a subtle way to just catch the peaks or..? Im interested to know how it performs when mastering as I haven't had the chance to use one.

I'm sorry if i missed this - but what interface are you using between your CPU and The Box2? Seems like you need 24 channels of simultaneous output from your i/o device? Is that db25, ADAT and 1/4" outputs? Thanks for your explanation, and I appreciate your effort!
@hopetownsound
@hopetownsound Год назад
Hi, Im using the Lynx Aurora N. 32 channels in 1 rack space. The Lynx has db25 connectors. the Box is a mix of db25 and balanced 1/4", XLR.

lol!! I think it's funny You only list those two options. My front end is a lynx Aurora N - 32 channels. I also own an apollo 4x but the lynx is my main converter.

@@hopetownsound well shows my ignorance. Truth is i have a PT Carbon, which i love for tracking...amazing. However i'm considering the Box as I miss the fun of an analog desk. Not sure if my Carbon is the right approach between ProTools and a desk like yours. Very helpful to see. thanks again.
@hopetownsound
@hopetownsound Год назад
@@scottcompton8862 the carbon looks like a good box. One of the drawbacks of going analog is you need a lot of channels of conversion.

What levels do record into the DAW and what mix bus levels do you aim for??thanks
@hopetownsound
@hopetownsound Год назад
recording: leave at least -6dbfs peak of headroom. with loud/fast transient (cymbals, acoustic guitar) a little more, with things like distorted guitar you can go a little louder. mixing... if you sending out for mastering go light on any mix bus processing a leave a few db of headroom. put a true peak brick wall limiter as the last plug in on the mix bus with a hard stop at -1dbfs but don't push it. The bottom line is there are transients that are too fast, too loud for DAW meters, so you want headroom to account for that. if you're not going for Mastering, and you're trying to get the levels, super hot yourself, just be sure to have that -1db peak stop in the final limiter. You need that headroom for converting to MP3s and video files, etc.
