All solid compounds have a melting point, and measuring an unknown compound's melting point can help you determine its identity (as long as you have a known sample of the compound for comparison). This video demonstrates this technique.
This experiment is based on a procedure described in the CHEM 216 Lab Manual, which was prepared by several members of the organic chemistry faculty at Cal Poly.
