The quest 3 will be launching day 1 with mixed reality. However, the VR community it very mixed on their feeling of Mixed Reality. Some see it as an addition to VR others see it as something that has no reason being part of the quest 3. What do you think? Will Mixed Reality make a difference in any way for the VR community?

Just the ability to put on a visor (or better glasses) see the world as normal, but now you can do other things like have a browser, or just a little bit of information like the time, or directions in your peripheral vision, or have one or more virtual screens of whatever size, anywhere in space where you can play a game, or do some work. You can do that anywhere, walking, sitting, standing, and still be present. I think were just at the start of that journey now.

I do my best. I love VR and everything in VR. I usually take a few days to reflect on what’s going on and going around the space. Usually a lot of conversations between me and the people I talk to in the space. I appreciate the kind words and am glad you have been enjoying the content.

I definitely agree on MR being a killer app of its own. Just wandering about the house with the Quest 3 using the hand-tracking to drag interfaces about with me just makes me wish we had more built-in MR stuff to do with it already (and clearer pass through :P ) Being able to have whatsapp open in one window with a browser in the other and being able to plonk the whole lot anywhere in space is very nice. I also think that MR gives you a level of confidence you won't have in VR because you're still aware of your surroundings... you don't have to have that mental note in the back of your mind to either keep an eye out for your boundaries appearing or just mapping where you are virtually to where you are in your real play space: people might not be aware of it but I'm still convinced that processing that subconsciously still takes up some mental processing, even if we don't feel it implicitly. I think this is a much bigger deal for older generations and new VR users than people realise too as the sensation of not knowing where you are in the real world can feel both disorienting and vulnerable. Think about how it is handing someone the controllers when they've got the headset on with pass through vs when they're in a full virtual environment and have to reach out blindly for them :D
@ButtorsVRGaming
@ButtorsVRGaming Год назад
Agree with your thoughts on clearer pass through. It will get better but 100% better than the quest 2. Lots of apps need to be updated though are MR. The second part I totally agree. It’s one of those things that I think will help parents with kids and animals. A lot of stuff in our spaces can be broken or hurt and MR fixes a lot of that.

When has John Carmack been wrong about anything in VR?? He's right. Mixed Reality is a gimmick and there are too many variables involved to make it worth smoothly. This isn't a tech that people wanted, this is something they invented and are trying to push onto us. Biggest prob I have with Meta is they try to manufacture hype and trends. Look at the people in the advertising. Those are NOT the people who actually use the Quest. It's like Meta thinks we're all stupid and actually believe this tech is mainstream.

I don’t see anyone in big numbers going to buy a quest for mixed reality. But there will be people doing it. Look at the AVP. There is hype around that platform I don’t think it will be huge in the long run but I think as of right now some will not be able to afford AVP and will get a quest 3 instead. @BigSunn0 make sure to make fun of me if I’m wrong. I encourage it. But I truly think people will get a headset for missed reality as the primary driver.

Thanks for raising this issue, but I respectfully disagree with your take. The only reason Zuckerberg is so focused on Augmented Reality is so he can bombard you with advertisements like in Minority Report. It’s the same reason game developers like Activision Blizzard pushed that awful mobile Diablo game- people are on their phones all the time and in greater numbers than traditional gaming formats. Apple won’t do that because you pay them with the hardware and per app costs. (of course they will do plenty of other things to ruin the experience in their own way like non-repairable devices) Meta will try to suck you in like they did with Facebook being free and then once they have you hooked destroy the experience with advertising and social media toxicity. Meta’s MR might grow VR adoption but only while ruining its direction and potential.
@EndersVRcade
@EndersVRcade Год назад
If the Q3 wasn’t focused on spending so much of its limited price per unit on mixed reality technology, it could have spent more on technology, such as mini LED screens with better local dimming, for example. Or maybe just a strap or headphones that aren’t garbage. (that’s not to discount its other wonderful improvements, but just saying money could be better well spent where VR gamers want or even just comfort for anyone if the focus wasn’t on mixed reality.)
@ButtorsVRGaming
@ButtorsVRGaming Год назад
@EndersVRcade Do you believe that games in general are there to hook you and suck you in? What is wrong with Meta doing that? Barring the data collection because I don’t agree that collecting data should be a thing at all from anyone. Just want to say we agree on that. But what is stopping anyone else from making you addicted to these devices. We will see how Apple does ads. Will be interested to see how Meta does then as well. But do you think Apple or meta will be putting an ad after you lose a game?
@ButtorsVRGaming
@ButtorsVRGaming Год назад
Do you think the first VR headset you got was garbage and a horrible experience @EndersVRcade ? I don’t think my first VR experience was bad. I think regardless of what happens this headset will have VR first timers in it. This will be many peoples first experience. Although they may have not gotten this headset for VR they will eventually try it. It’s a matter of time. But people that got a quest 3 for mixed reality will eventually try VR. Many will want MR because it would block their view and they have animals and kids they need to see. But when they have time they will want to try VR. It’s easier to introduce part of an idea that is not understood than to try and preset it all at the same time. That is what MR is doing.
@EndersVRcade
@EndersVRcade Год назад
@@ButtorsVRGamingI think specifically Meta’s goal, not the VR industry in general, is to hook you on their ecosystem (much like Apple) with games and hardware sold at a loss. They need to turn a profit as all businesses do. Meta’s stock value was continually dropping due to a lack of profitability leading to mass layoffs as a result because this model of selling their VR ecosystem at a loss was unsustainable. So now Meta is trying to shift their existing ecosystem and consumer base to MR. How do they turn a profit and what’s different about it? Advertising and data mining only this time theoretically, with a larger user base they can switch to exploiting data and ads faster than they were trying with VR (Blaston being the one test case in Meta’s ecosystem and thematic got such pushback the devs backed out hard of that) because cell phone “free-meium” players will put up with ads and in game purchases and so will MR players because they care about game mechanics like Fruit Ninja more than immersion and great graphics, like you would see in a VR game.
@EndersVRcade
@EndersVRcade Год назад
@@ButtorsVRGaming I do see your point that mixed reality might be intriguing and then get people to try virtual reality games. However, my concern is that all the industry money will go to mixed reality games which will be a poorer quality experience for the reasons I described above. In other words, I think it will result in a higher quantity of players for an overall poor quality of experiences offered, and no I don’t think my first headset the oculus quest one was garbage. I think it was great. But that was a very different headset with a focus on virtual and not mixed reality in line with John Carmack’s ideals. Quest one was my gateway to better virtual reality experiences via PCVR, and Meta is focusing on, I think the opposite direction with mixed reality. Quest 1 and Meta’s focus at that time is not what it is now, so I don’t think my first headset experience is relevant to the present direction. Oculus PC is getting killed by Meta is an indication of that. Like I said earlier, there’s only so many resources the company has to spend and it’s not elevating VR, it’s in my opinion lowering the bar with MR much like Blizzard asking diehard PC Diablo fans at Blizzcon, “ your headphones don’t you? Aren’t you excited for a new Diablo game? You can play on your phones.” This was followed by the crowds asking this is a joke, right like an April fools joke?” And then crickets. My apologies for the terrible typos. I am writing this with my thumbs on my phone.

Apple did one thing that was very cool. It's the ability to incrementally go from passthrough, to MR, and then full VR. This is done as a changing transparency. I hope Meta can someday do a software update, to implement a similar effect in the Quest 3. It all then becomes different levels of XR. As for MR applications, it's hard for me to find a compelling use case. I had one idea of a "Stargate" portal ring, in one's living room (MR). One can walk through it. Find oneself on another planet (VR). Same with all "portal" genres (e.g., Alice in Wonderland, Narnia, NDE's, OBE's, ...). Just an idea.

Eh mixed reality, for it to work you'd want more than an hour of battery life for mixed reality, I have a big ass 4k TV I don't want to wear an HMD to have a big ass TV. Maybe once the HMD becomes more like a pair of regular glasses, the mainstream still doesn't want to wear an HMD to watch movies or AR. Mixed reality for games will be super scaled back and mostly cool tech demos just like VR has been for a while. Carmack is generally on point with his opinions and I don't believe he's far off on this one either.
@ButtorsVRGaming
@ButtorsVRGaming Год назад
I don’t think anyone in VR will get into MR like someone that is out of VR. I think glasses will be what makes this mainstream 100% but I think people will for sure get one of these and just leave it plugged into a wall and watching TV. As for the games I don’t expect them to be wild but just like VR we do have to start somewhere @PandaGamingPodcast

Abso-lutely love your in-depth content & perspective. It's very refreshing in this era of oversaturated, increasingly bland VR content all while advertising products to monetize from the mainstream. While I think the Quest 3 is going to blow minds, and with how much drastically better the colored passthrough has become, it still doesn't look as crisp as it needs to be used by the masses daily IMO. While I can make out what is on my iPhone while in colored passthrough, it's not crisp and there is still this blurry look to hands and objects. I'm hoping that is a software side of things that Meta will be able to make better with future updates to the Quest 3. But I believe you are correct, the mixed reality portion of the Quest 3 will open the door to many new faces within VR. I can't wait to see and hear peoples reactions. I'm also excited to try it hooked up to my beast of a PC and see what it's true limits may be. Less than a week away. Now I want a frozen Reese's cup...

Yea I don’t think we see daily MR/AR till we get glasses sadly. I’m pretty sure we agree on that as well. I still like that I can read a phone. Don’t have to take off my headset. So nice. I really hope the MR grabs people. It’s going to have mom and dad not get so sick as well and maybe be a stepping stone to VR legs. I did not even think of that. As for the Reese’s they are in the fridge lol.

As a person who loves VR, mixed reality has nothing to offer me other than pass through. Also every non vr person iam trying to get into VR show zero interest in mixed reality and the average joe isn't on reddit talking about the apple headset. Iam sorry but Carmac is right, I believe mixed reality will turn new comers away from VR because they won't have that full emersive experience that VR gives. Mixed reality will at best be like the Nintendo wii it looked great at first but then the majority of the ones sold were left to gather dust under the TV and left a bad taste in the mouth of non gamers that took a chance on something new
@ButtorsVRGaming
@ButtorsVRGaming Год назад
One of the top answers on why people don’t ever get into VR includes it blocking out their space and not being able to see around them. Mixed reality along with AR will be used around the home for tutorials on repairs or cooking. As well as entertainment when you can’t use screens in the house. VR is amazing but mixed reality shuts down the notion that people don’t want to be blocked off from the world. As for the Wii analogy Wii sports is what most played for sure. Was a family thing but still the main issue mixed and AR is fixing is for people that don’t want to be blocked off from their world. I don’t see it making a massive dent in sales but it will be the primary reason to some people. And if those people that never tried VR because it blocked out the view get a quest 3 for MR maybe they will get into the VR side of things.

I'm sorry, but there's no way I'm doing chores or fixing things around the house with mixed reality. The exception might be learning piano or experiencing mixed reality entertainment. However, I can't imagine trying to cook in mixed reality; it's neither better nor more convenient than using a RU-vid video or following a recipe on a phone or tablet. Not to mention all the smoke, grease, and heat involved.
@ButtorsVRGaming
@ButtorsVRGaming Год назад
I mean, I’m standing 3 inches away from an open fire. And I’m not trying to touch my fingers. We’ll see what it comes out. You shouldn’t really be having too much grease splatter or smoke. Maybe I should reserve the cooking for a different video. But I can totally see myself going around the house, vacuuming and doing shit while I have this on. And learning piano is going to be cool you’ll probably be able to learn guitar and a whole bunch of other instruments as well.

The average person is not going to love mixed reality; they are going to love one specific use of mixed reality, most likely a giant screen TV on their wall. Mixed reality is a great tool with many uses, but will remain a gimmick unless the developers themselves fall in love with it and begin to use it in all of the myriad ways it offers. Any single end-user will not really see the breadth of those uses because they will just use it one way they prefer.
@ButtorsVRGaming
@ButtorsVRGaming Год назад
Watching videos while doing chores around the house is going to be a huge use case. You also have to think I cook a lot. A lot of the things I cook are from RU-vid I will be able to pull up the recipe and video all at the same time and not touch anything with my hands that have been all over the food. That’s a massive use case. I think we will see people get into the headset for this reason. It won’t be the only reason but will be the primary reason they started with the headset. Apple Vision Pro will fail hard AF if no one is getting into headsets for mixed reality/productivity alone. Let’s be honest. Like I said. Not a lot will get it from just this but there will be people that do. @stevedoetsch it’s not about a lot of people it’s about the small amount outside of VR that will get it for it’s mixed reality uses. Then get into VR eventually. Even if it’s just grandpas VR porn machine.

Exactly, amazing how it wasn't a gimmick when apple presented it, everyone was like i want one. But now meta present a device that can do the same thing and it not viable all of a sudden. And all the haters are still looking towards the Apple vision. If a pair of glasses came out today that presented AR or MR for a good price it would be sold out. 🤔 but for some reason , quest 3 is not going to move the industry 😅 the hypocrisy
