Mixing Gain Pedals In Parallel For Ultimate Versatility - That Pedal Show

In this episode we explore the useful and inspiring possibilities offered by parallel gain staging… among various other tangential observances. Most of us are familiar with series signal chains because that’s what happens when you connect any two pedals together: one flows into the other. Parallel is where the signal is split before two effects, then hits them separately and is mixed back together again afterwards. You might think that combining two pedals would produce the same results however you connect them. Well, not so, as we discover.
For anyone asking how to combine two pedals in parallel and what you might need to do so…
The Wetter Box by TheGigRig can do this. We’re not sure about other stuff, but whatever you choose, you need to be able to split the signal before the two devices you want to mix in parallel… then mix them together again afterwards.

Honorable mention. Absolutely crucial element when distorting Bass guitar! I know this isn't a bass focused channel but more and more bassists are coming around to the merits of parallel tone shaping, especially after a frequency split, for distorting the upper frequencies and low passing clean low fundamental frequencies.

I don't know, it's been an odd thing. The more I watch videos of you guys, and a multitude of amazing people that play and review gear on YT, the more I love Boss. I get that boutique pedals have an edge to them, some things that only they can do, but good ol' Boss gets the job done every time. (Provided the player knows how to work them, off course) Lovely show, as always.

Thank you guys for a great episode! Long time viewer, first time commenter. Thank you for proving that I'm not mad! I've used a TC Electronic Nova Drive as my main drive pedal for years. It's hard rock sounds as a distortion are great, and for my lead sound I switch to the overdrive and distortion in parallel via MIDI (sorry Mick!), and adding a boost after. It means I can keep my main core tone, whilst adding clarity and definition for leads, whilst subtly adjusting the EQ. No more gain, but everything sounds bigger, fuller and just plain better. I knew I wasnt mental. Keep up the good work boys, loving your work!

Thank you very much for sharing your insight on this topic. I asked for this a long time ago as I am already running my drive pedals (and delays for that matter) in parallel for a number of years. To me, the most important reason for running (drive) pedals in parallel is versatility indeed. Both pedals retain their individual tonal characteristics and I can blend those two sounds.

I learn more than one thing g every time. Today I learned that parallel gain is just as cool as parallel modulation, and I also learned that when I do get to wet/dry, I'll be buying more than one splitter. Cost of gear, $XXXX, value of badass tone, priceless. Great show again. Thanks, guys.

Great show! For years I have used an EHX Bass Big Muff after my main over drive pedal, as a boost. The reason I use the bass version and not the normal one is that it has a "dry" switch. This allows your clean signal to be added to the fuzz sound. Since I have an overdrive infront of the fuzz, it mixes my od and fuzz sound together. Giving me a much more complex, fuller drive sound.

Another great episode! It's worth noting the Angry Driver does some gnarly things when it's boosted with another pedal in front of it. Also, the bonus functionality with the remote jack makes it super versatile. You get one pedal as a base, and then it kicks in the other on top, or in parallel, toggles the Blues Driver. All that said, I took mine home when my local store didn't have an Angry Charlie in stock. I leave mine dialed in not far from where it was when the Empress demo started. Stacking/boosting it with a Rattler or 1962X is fun, too. When the Angry Charlie side gets a lot of gain in front, it gets really angry. Thanks for the hard work!

So glad you guys did this video. I've fascinated with parallel drives for a number of years. In the past I've owned a Boss LS-2 and used that for blending fuzz and overdrive in parallel. I've also owned an Empress Multidrive. Currently though, I'm back to using a straight overdrive pedal. What I've noticed is that in a loud band context, it's the cleaner of the 2 drive sounds that cuts through, to the point where the higher gain / fuzz sound is indistinct. On it's own parallel sounds awesome, and to be honest it still intrigues me. Maybe I should get the Angry Driver, hmmm.

Awesome tones! Love the sounds and playing. I have three drive pedals on my board (OCD, TS9, MXR Dookie Drive.) I often find myself getting lost in option paralysis. I like the way they sound when they stack but I also feel like 2 stacked pedals sounds very similar to one of them with more gain dialed in. I keep trying different orders but can’t land on one that seems right. Playing around with parallel options seems like the way to go. Thanks for knowledge and entertainment. I have tried tons of drive pedals. A good one will have a nice sweep of light gain to saturated gain. It will have an eq that can accentuate the level of gain to taste. It can clean up excellent with the guitar volume. There is one that stands out as the leader of the pack. It’s none of the boutique pedals. It’s not the OCD. It is the Boss Blues Driver. The low end is tight and enormous. The high end is articulate as hell. The strings sound stringy thru this pedal. Put a clean boost after it for solos. Incredible pedal.

Strymon SUNSET dual overdrive is a real killer in this department. A channel, separate B channel, you can put A into B in series, B into A in series, or A and B parallel with each other. Add in the knobs on each channel to dial in the variables for each and you have a smorgasborg of sounds. Add in a Selah Quartz V3 controller (SUNSET TRS cable out to the Selah) and you can save any number of drive combinations you like. A really simple, space saving, killer solution for those not wanting to have 6 or 8 drives on their board! (sorry Mick, had to say it !!). Of course if someone were to give me a King of Tone, I do believe I would happily add a second drive pedal. :-)

I thought this video would be a learning experience and nothing more, since parallel drives don’t seem like a thing I’d ever need, but the part with the octave changed my mind; the ability to blend the right amount of octave fuzz in with another type of gain sounds like something that could be really useful!

Great demonstration, and something I'm going to experiment with in my Helix. The Empress Multidrive is like a take on the old Craig Anderton Quadrafuzz from the 80s - good stuff. The ultimate parallel fuzz was the "hex fuzz" from the Roland GR100 and GR300 - but that's a bit of and edge case... but what a great sound. Worked quite will for a Mr. Fripp.

You guys need to collaborate with Josh Scott on a new pedal. A dual parallel modulation called 'The Tangent'. Starts off in whatever settings you have the knobs at but then diverges randomly into other sounds before eventually returning to the original. 'Dual Parallel' because either side can diverge and one can follow the other or do its own thing that may or may not be related. I suggest Josh because he's quite capable of going off on a tangent all by himself. Imagine how many units you'd shift. Up to a million (remembering that 'up to' includes all figures less than that) I would think. 😎

Thanks for nice show on serial vs parallel ODs. I have wandered why the TC Electronics NovaDrive didn’t get mentioned. It’s a fantastically sounding pedal with independent analog OD and Distortion engines which can be run in series and parallel. It also has the incredibly useful feature that 16 presets can be programmed in which are MIDI switchable which makes it a great partner for the G2. @@mattgilbert7347 honestly, just get a new LS-2. I don't know what it's like in Oz, but in the UK I couldn't find one on Ebay going for much less than about £45 with shipping and usually more like £50. They're £79 new from Andertons or GAK, and that way you've got a warranty if you get a dud or something craps out - unlikely for Boss but still worth it for the little it'll cost.

Funny you should upload this today, my Chase Bliss Brothers was delivered to my door about an hour ago and I'm playing with it as we speak. Sounds absolutely incredible, I'm usually very picky with drives and am not a fan of particularly high gain tones, but the parallel mix feature on this is just perfect for dialling in just the right amount of gain and just the right feel under the fingers. This ones a keeper, I can feel it (it wants to be for its price!).
@palodine1

I love my Chase Bliss Brothers too. I use it in parallel with boost and overdrive or w/ boost and fuzz. It's almost like two guitars at once if you play in stereo. My gain stages start at EarthQuaker Devices The Warden compression with the gain up a bit and then into the Chase Bliss. That goes into an Xotic Effects RC Booster that has 2 stages of boost; one light and one heavier. The next gain stage is the EHX mini POG , very slight upper and lower octave settings and the gain set a bit above unity. Add some slight delay and reverb into a stereo amp set up and it's pretty awesome.

@@palodine1 cant wait to try it out with some more gain stages. Been playing around running it into another boost and it sounds great, more volume and clean headroom = more good! I'm currently having a massive pedalboard overhaul and have sold off like 9 of the 12 pedals that were on my board, and I'm waiting for a hudson broadcast and a cali76 to run with the brothers. Cant wait!

FYI, Peter Greens LP was “magnetically” out of phase, as the neck pickup’s magnet was re-installed 180 degrees from stock. Most guitars are typically set up with a switch to make the pickups “electrically” out of phase. The tonal difference is quite significant.

Hi Gents, Great show as usual. Peter Green’s pickups were totally out of phase, however, his sweet “out of phase” tone was made by lowering the volume of one pickup to minimize the cancellation and get that hollow, vocal, vowel like sound. Cheers!

Great show! The Klon can be seen as a parallel mixer of the clean signal and clipping OD, something like the Angry Driver in parallel experiment (probably that’s why Mick liked that the most). Currently, I’m exploring parallel mixing preamp pedals with a Boss LS-2, to try to achieve multi-amp tones with a single signal chain into the power stages. Cheers

Upon Mick's advice, it being a holiday weekend here in the US, today I turned all the knobs on my Mesa'Boogie F-50 and my gain pedals on my small pedalboard (tc electronic MojoMojo, Catalinbread Formula 5F6, and tc electronic Spark booster) to 2:00, and it was so loud even without the pedals on and in the "clean channel" of just the one amp that I fear I may need to repair some of the plastering in my flat. And I'll have you know that I run 12AU7s in the first two positions to reduce the level of gain in the amplifier. :D

The trick to out of phase pickups is to use Gibson's two volume controls and dial back either the bridge or neck ever so slightly, which fills in some body to the sound without losing the "quack." I love the sound of it!

Source Audio LA Lady allows parallel gain staging. It has two drive channels which can be run in series or parallel, run in stereo or mixed to mono. You can also blend in your clean sound. You checked it out on a pick and mix once and quite liked it if I remember (despite it being digital 😉 ).
