Detune down the close snare drum mic.
@antiHUMANDesigns

For the snare, I may put a sample, but fade the sample in, so I only use the sustain of the sample, while using 100% of the acoustic attack of the real drum. As the real/acoustic snare dies out, the snare sample fades up and gives it length. This way, you really can't tell that there's a sample there, at all. It sounds perfectly "real", because every hit has a unique attack sound. I geuss it would be equal to "ducking" the sample using the real snare sound, but using a side-chain to do that just doesn't work very well.

This video came at just right time for me. Excellent overview. Instead of using the SSL plugin, I'm bussing the drums out to RND Shelford Preamps, tweeking them there, and then printing them to a new track. Same methodology, different tools. So far, this is working out superbly.

Thank you David & Warren! I'm starting to revisit metal lately, and learning from these, having a fresher perspective on it again, from just listening to some new and some old. It's hard not to just bust out with the vocals, it's so operatic and driven. Everything I liked about rock opera and more! I don't know why this surprises me. I mean it makes sense.

Quick question for David: around the end of the video, you mention sending kick, snare and toms to a mono channel going through a Distressor (so, pretty much the good old parallel compression technique). My question is: while I totally get wanting the kick and snare as mono and "center" as possible to anchor the mix, doesn't sending toms as well mess with their placement in the stereo field ? As in metal you often want toms as wide as possible, to the point of being kinda "un-natural" so that tom rolls pop (it's not like modern metal is about natural/vintage drum tones anyway), and having part of the information straight in the center pull them back from the side and to the center. Or is there something I'm missing ?

Great vid. It just shows me that, as an independent artist, its fine that my drummer (in Sweden) records his tracks via midi drums (I'm in Germany). No miking the drums and replacing the samples, cause we are triggering a drum sampler (or two) via live played drums. Yeah!

I like having the snare almost as loud, but never louder, or just below the main vocal. I like an sm58 right in the bass drum on the pillow next to the brick..haha! The beater shot reflects off of the brick and creates a snappy sound! JUST KIDDING!! Although.....hmmmmm! Andy Wallace said that the song had to sound like a streamlined train with no antenna's sticking out, and he gets the bass and bass drum to have the ''same'' sound. Got caught up in Samuel Jackson's Master Class Commercial right before your video! He said that you had to go out there and be something that people remember. Good advice Sam! Ok i'm ready for this cause i'm gonna record my thrash metal e.p. soon! Yeah! Thanks Warren and Dave! Rock On!

Nice tutorial, but if we're wanting to bite the bullet and try and make a kit we miked and recorded sound great in a mix, it's almost guaranteed that any video tutorial will have the "now let's replace with samples" step. Any plan on doing some kind of end-to-end to create sample-worthy drum tracks from scratch? =) Awesome channel!
@Producelikeapro
@Producelikeapro 4 года назад
Thanks ever so much Bill for your comment! I find it very important to understand how to create all different kinds of drum sounds. This tutorial is for mixing modern Metal Drums which are being mixed into a hugely dense, massive guitar sounds. I also love recording and mixing, organic acoustic tracks, 70's drum sounds to fit a 70's style production, Jazz, Orchestral, you'll find all kinds of genres on my channel for instance! Now, if you can find your niche and only need one skill set that's amazing! However, I have found, for me at least, that I need a large skill set where creating music in order to make a living doing music. Understanding all styles and genres for me is very important!
@billium99

Absolutely, Warren! I’m just trying to get some advice on miking drums for a metal mix, ideally without the need for samples. I might be tilting at windmills. ☺️
@Producelikeapro
@Producelikeapro 4 года назад
@@billium99 marvellous question! Most Metal guys I know close mic everything for maximum control! You definitely don't have to use samples, it's a case of making sure the other instruments don't dwarf the drums! Listen to Zeppelin and you'll hear how much room there is for the drums to shine!

To bad he was mixing samples instead of drums. I like David and follow him. He has some great techniques. Same with Warren. Love what Warren does. His channel is a wealth of information. This one, I just can't get on board with. Yes, I know, almost all drums are samples these days. But that is why I don't like it. Even in the 80's there were sampled drums. I didn't like the way they sounded. They didn't sound real to me. They sound much better these days but you can still tell. Maybe not the average listener, for sure but, I rather do a good job tuning a great drum set, micing it good with decent mics ( you don't need 8000 dollar mics) and mixing it. It isn't that hard and you can get these sounds no problem without all the samples and processing. Don't be lazy and it isn't that much harder. Tune the drums properly and almost any drumset will sound fine. Work with mic placement. The rest is easy if you have a good drummer.

Nice video but I don't like the replacing of real drums with samples. I'm an audio engineer and a huge metal fan but I cannot listen to modern metal productions, it sounds really bad and machine gun like, very fatigueging to the ears. Listen to Master of Puppets or Rust in Peace, those are real drums it sounds much better.
