Mixing Oil Mediums - “How To” + Some History = Everything you Need to Know!!🌟

Finally I get around to discussing Oil Paint Mediums! An introduction to mixing and all the different mediums and effects you can get with them!
Adding Mediums to Oil, while not essential, can change the viscosity, surface finish and drying time to your painting, so it’s worth researching if you are looking for a different or particular effect to your final painting!
I touch a little on history too for context of how dramatic these mediums can be for changing artistic practise in a chemical way!
📚 Gottsegen’s “The Painters Handbook” is my secret weapon for this episode!!
Basics info is:
The linseed oils! Standard is a popular choice, Refined is glossier and is good for “wet on wet” paintings, Cold Pressed is paler and the purest form and dries quicker I find. Linseed Stand Oil is tough, thicker and can be thinned with turpentine and dammar varnish to create a beautiful glaze on a 1:5:1 ratio!
I use Poppy Oils and Walnut Oils, but empasto mediums and beeswax are also great to shake things up!
Remember, fast drying/slow drying - glossy/matt - transparent/opaque - smooth/textured are just a few basic effects on my “scale of medium possibilities” you can create!
There are so many mediums available, if you’d like more links and information take a look below!
(With mediums it’s all about experimenting and exploring new techniques- there is no right or wrong apart from the “fat over lean” policy which encourages building paint layers “thin-thick” to prevent cracking oil paint when drying.)
Hopefully this helps refresh the topic of oil mediums and opens up possibilities for artists to become mad scientists!!

Yay Monday! - it means another Art Life video. 🤓 I love all the art history you research and share. 🎨I vote heck yes to seeing you do a 'fake ageing' experiment.

This was fun and informative. I particularly enjoy how you talk about art and your book references. I haven't tried oils yet as I'm a beginner but hope to some time in the near future. A mention regarding safety when using mediums (e.g. turps) and cadmiums would be interesting too. Thanks for all you do and keep going. You're one of the best.

Your handwritten Medium Scale is a nice graphical addition to the Show & Tell videos. How ‘bout graphic version of EOY 2022 summary (in addition to video) for Art Life merch? 👩🏻‍🎨😷👩🏻‍🎨

Thanks for the book recommendation...purchased! 😃 and thanks for the chat and demo of oils and solvents. I feel I can walk into an art shop and know a little better on all the variety of oils and glazes on offer. Just need to allow time and experience with all of them I suppose :) 👍🏻

Hi, I watched some of your videos enthusiastically and found many of them quite interesting and informative. I'm from Kerala, India and I'm an amateur artist, mostly self- taught one. I haven't step into oils ' caus i'm a bit afraid of lack of technical knowledge of it. Also, I look forward to budget friendly sort of things in the beginning before maturing in the field of oil painting. So avidly watch educational videos like yours. Could you please suggest some materials from buying a canvas to priming to colours to even selling art works. Equally, i can't but say that I really enjoyed your vigour and vitality and charm while presenting your videos. I could feel such a vibrant energy exudes from you to hold the views. Yes, I love your raw energy too. Thanks for uploading more informative videos . All the best for your artistic career and good health

How often do you clean your brushes at the end of the day when you are done? what about coconut oil does it dry fast?
@ArtLifeWeekly
@ArtLifeWeekly 2 года назад
Usually after every session but sometimes I’m lazy... I’d steer clear of coconut oil as it’s considered one of the non drying oils although it is used as the basis of some paints under certain conditions

@@ArtLifeWeekly thanks so much for replying - I will for sure steer clear of the coconut oil - I am just now getting into oils and have so much to learn...was doing acrylics and watercolor - oils are a whole other beast...thanks so much for being such a great teacher - I am learning so much from you...would love to see you paint more so I can "watch" your techniques not just hear about them

@@ArtLifeWeekly I am from 🇺🇸. I wanted to recommend you try Murphy’s Oil Soap (all natural vegetable soap) to clean your brushes.. especially if you’re tired & want to leave them. Just pour some in a container. Put your brushes in for a few hrs or overnight, & rinse w/ warm water. It’s fast, easy, & completely non toxic. You’ve been doing this much longer than me. I’m really enjoying your videos as I’m learning so much. I actually was a research biologist, & studied chemistry at university. I’m retired early now due to an illness (but it brought me to painting😉), & I just wanted to mention that. all solvents even odorless ones, are dangerous as they do contain a carcinogen known as benzene. Of course good ventilation is needed while using them, but over time, if you get it on your skin (your hands for example) frequently enough, it’ll remove the natural oils & can allow the toxic components to penetrate your skin. I realize you probably know this, but just in case you didn’t💛.

how do you not have Gamblin Gamsol, its the best solvent for cleaning. check it out
