Dave there is a frequency analyzer in the pro q. On the bottom where it says off thereana is a dropped where you can make the analyzer pre or post. :)

Does anyone agree with me in thinking that the fabfilter pro q 2 is one of the best eq plugs around? I really want to get it but I want to make sure it's a good investment.

I am using Sonitus in Sonar for vocal EQ - does anyone know of anyone great EQ settings to apply to a male Vocal that i could try to make the vocal clear and smooth to stand out in the mix ? low shelf / high shelf etc
@PaulBell88
@PaulBell88 6 лет назад
High pass up to 120hz or so. Low Q, broad boost at 200hz for weight. Cut 500-700 high Q narrow to get rid of boxiness. Mid Q small boosts around 2k, 4k, or 8k to get it to cut through dense mix or chorus section. Of course every voice different. Sweep around to find what sounds good.

I guess I don't understand how you put a hi-pass on the over all track, but are boosting your 150hz -/+. Doesn't that defeat the hi-pass?
@reality3995
@reality3995 8 лет назад
+CoolEditz no the whole point of the high pass filter was to remove the low frequency information and rumbling from the vocal so it doesnt conflict with other low frequencies in the mix. the fundamental frequency of the human voice falls between 100-500hz so the boost at 150-200hz really just brings out some low-mid range on the vocal.

I just downloaded fabfilter after watching this. I'm definitely gonna buy it if I LIKE it, but from what i've seen it gives you a lot of control. But it makes me wonder, if all EQs have the same functions why does it even matter which one we use? They should all give us the same results, shouldn't they?
@KidDiamondTV
@KidDiamondTV 9 лет назад
Not all EQs have the same functionality besides the primary features. It matters which one we use, because each one of them have their own signature coloration that's being applied to the processed audio (even though very subtle). Just like compressor A might make your sound more warm sounding, but compressor B a bit more thin, even though the parameters on both are exactly set the same. It's a matter of personal taste of the graphical user interface and sound you're looking for.

I've figured out to acquire good sound that you would need a good A/D convertor , summing amp and software with a 64 bit engine. No need for compression unless you use it for vocals or a guitar or anything from a mic. Eq is only used to cut conflict clashes in frequency and protools is garbage without a great A/D convertor , tc electronic 6000 in between or both.
@chuckcostello5167
@chuckcostello5167 10 лет назад
You've figured this out all by yourself, huh? Well let's hear your mixes using the mockup you just listed. Aside from that, this video has good info, whether you realize it yet or not. EQ is used for all manner of things in mixing, not just "to cut conflict clashes in frequency". As an engineer mixing other people's music, you never know what type of tracks you'll end up with as well as how well (or how terribly bad) they were recorded. I doubt seriously your summing amp, 64 bits, and A/D convertors will help you churn out a good mix with tracks like that without EQ.

Doesnt that teal low cut he adds do essentially nothing because he already has a low cut at a higher frequency?
@AlexNiedt
@AlexNiedt 10 лет назад
It's cutting even more low end, technically. Whether it's truly perceptible in the context of the mix is another question that we can't answer, since we didn't hear the mix.

And that's what drives me nuts about online forums discussing EQ. People will say cut here or cut there. Well by how much? People will say wide band or narrow band but that's so subjective. Watching people EQ with Fabfilter gives me the exact Q numbers to use as a starting reference.

+Gevorg Gevorgyan This would compromise the audio, its hard to hear the frequencies he is taming/boosting if we are hearing a sped up version of it. This tutorial hardly drags on, it is just short of 8 minutes of great demonstration. I would agree with you when it comes to the live shows though, ITL are just an exception.

Hey ***** , do u ever use a low pass to tame the top end of your vocals?
@HenryMusic255
@HenryMusic255 8 лет назад
+Bayram Ozkan yes, lol.. A low pass filter allows frequences below it to pass through, while gently cutting down on high sounds... But I've learnt alot since I posted this comment.. Lately I just use a bell curve cut + de-esser + maybe a bit of saturation to tame harsh high sounds...

Low pass is usable with vocals, just not so often. I've used it with a high Q value to reduce too much "air" in the vocal while still maintaining the presentence.

Dave, I would love to see a video on proper use and setting up an AD/DA convertor. Plus the benefits on analog summing and the distinct sound quality or tones from vintage outboard gear such as the SSL and Neve. I think people are sick of seeing the same non productive videos on eq and compression. We want to know how to achieve great sound quality and to mimic a vintage or popular tone or harmonic characteristic. Thanks..
@GretschGod

You achieve a good sound WITH good EQ and compression. Having well recorded material to work with helps of course...

AndJustAnotherUser right! Remember all those classic mixes before digital? I'm often amazed how some of the stuff from even the 60's sounded so good with the equipment they had. Talent and determination. It's usually the Indian and not the arrow that makes the difference.

I know he's renowned and all, but this is just bad. VERY basic and he stutters, pauses, and tries to recall very basic terms like "bandwidth" and highpass. His age shows.

i learned from this and i would hardly consider it basic, nothing about music production is basic unless you are using dubturbo. now gtfo you troglodyte
@KnockKnockInovas
@KnockKnockInovas 10 лет назад
4g0ny My definition of "basic" largely differs from yours, as does the quality of my work more than likely. I just expected more than the very fundamental basics of EQ'ing vocals parametrically from a "legend" since there are thousands of basic videos like this.
@CodyCleggMusic
@CodyCleggMusic 10 лет назад
Yes, but if you can't do EQ, you are aren't a very good audio engineer at all. It's not hard to understand EQ. It takes years to MASTER it, though. It is the single most important trait of an audio engineer, so checking out a specific example from a pro is a very good thing, no matter which way you spin it.
@KnockKnockInovas
@KnockKnockInovas 10 лет назад
Cody Clegg I just expected to see something new coming from a pro in 2014. That's all. Not sure that the fuss is about.
@KnockKnockInovas
@KnockKnockInovas 10 лет назад
Sean Smith I didn't make a fuss, I voiced my opinion which is what the comments are for. Three people took the initiative to say something about that which imo is what escalates a benign expression of distaste into a "fussy thread. My bad for expecting more from this vid and mentioning it, I guess?

Well? Dave. When I have some harshness at 10 kHz on a vocal. I will frequently patch in a High Frequency Limiter/De-esser. And it does so, Dynamically. Keeping it bright. Except for that Sibilance.. It smooths that right out. Dynamically. Instead of fixed. Why did you do it, fixed? Oh well? We don't all do it the same way. Of course this was 9 years ago. This was posted. Maybe he does it my way now? After all it's been 9 years. I think he's still learning? And can he still, hear well, today? He's nine years older now so I don't think so? He can't hear those high frequencies anymore. He's an old man. And they lose those high frequencies. So? He probably wouldn't correct those, now? Because he can't hear them anymore. RemyRAD

Dave? Parametric EQ is a relatively recent EQ? I don't think so. They've existed for well over 50 years now. Where have you been buddy? Did you just wake up? You know they've been on George Massenburg audio consoles since, 1972. They existed before that. But they were very large, single-channel, rackmount devices. And you could not have those on every channel of your audio console. That's what George Massenburg did. He had the miniaturized stanch leave. Using newer technologies. To put one on every channel of his audio console.. Later SSL and others started doing the same thing. Including parametric equalizers. But no Old Neve console, can do that. 1073's can't do that. They are not surgical. They are Broad Q, enhancement devices. Not really corrective devices. And oh well. Plenty of hits have been engineered with those. Those are what I have, 1073's. Oh well? I can suffer. Ha! So this is all pretty funny to me. As I'm a Real Audio Engineer. And I know what I'm listening to. Most everybody else doesn't. They've never heard it right before. They wanted better speakers than, JBL. They wanted to be, stupid. And so they are. They are all stupid together. Which makes them all, right. And that's what, Cults. Are all about. As when everybody is wrong together. They are right and righteous! And so all of these dummies are taught wrong at the University Level. I've discovered. This is really no different. Then all of these world-famous Physicists & Astrophysicists. That believe. The galaxies were all created a certain way. Over billions of years of time. Which they recently found out. They are completely wrong about. They've been teaching it wrong for years. And people have college degrees of wrong. Whoops! And so educated academic idiots. All think they are right here. They are not. I know it. RemyRAD
