These are the type of basic help we newbies need. Thank you Joe. Don't forget Leonard Cohen bass vocal, full low end vibe... You've got a GREAT Nashville touch.😎
That's exactly what I thought: the dry track sounds really good! Makes you think about the importance of volume balance from the start, and if you can't do that because the recorded tracks sound like creap, it's time to rerecord.
One important thing I only realised pretty late is that it’s important to learn on high quality recordings. I’ve struggled with poorly recorded tracks for a while and I got so frustrated that I almost gave up mixing because no matter what I did, I couldn’t get it to sound nice or even cut through. When learning, it can be hard to differentiate between good and bad rough mixes and while your ears are still being trained, it’s good to have an example of how a mix CAN sound and have a reference to compare to. I’m still definitely a novice, but I actually proved to myself that I can mix when the tracks are half decent. Yes, it’s good to learn how to fix things, but as I’ve learnt from editing photographs it’s easier to subtract and tweak from a detailed file than to try and add something that’s not there.
Had lots of problems with creating the perfect mix on vocals @ my home studio (Studio One 5).. You have really answered lots of questions for me - Thank you so much kind person..
I've learned more from a handful of these 15m vids over the last year than I ever did in my 25yrs of recording. More a comment on my inability to learn on my own, but jeepers.. these videos are fantastic! ✌🏾🤟🏾
I would just like to say that I am brand new in this recording area. I have been making songs on my little $5 app on my phone for YEARS I never really considered going to a studio because I don't really make music to try to be a big huge fancy artist LOL I just do it as a hobby for fun because I absolutely love doing it whether my material is what the world wants to hear or not LOL anyhow..... so I bought the AudioBox Studio ultimate bundle package at Guitar Center and I have it all set up and everything's going great and I have now figured out how to record by watching your videos. There is no other RU-vidr that explains in-depth and shows us how exactly to do something the way you do. Applause to you my friend. You are one hell of a teacher thank you thank you thank you thank you. I have learned so much just from this little video.. Wow thank you man thank you... Where can I find one of your videos about the de-esser?? I'm the type of artist who has a very sharp S and a very poppy P..... once again thank you so much man this video was amazing
I loved the quick and dirty vocal mix. It reminds me of doing live sound. Set it up quick and move on. I've done live sound for years, and I've finally took the plunge and bought version 5. Lots of fun, and a few headaches too.
I’ve been wanting to see you do this for so long Joe. Especially on your voice. I’m looking forward to seeing you graduate this to non stock plugins then maybe to your favourite plugins on Your voice maybe even using the same song phrase as you used here so you can really A B compare between the final mix.
This is one of the reasons that I enjoy using my Console 1 with Studio One so much. It really limits me to one set of EQ and Compressors (and console emulation, which seems to eliminate some of the EQ need for me). While this is not "stock", it meets a similar criteria of getting to know one set of tools and then expanding on those to incorporate others where they are needed. Whether with stock or with something external that is consistent, it seems that the "learn your base plugins" is a good lesson. If your source is good and you have good command of a few good stock/goto plugins, you can get near 90% of the mix done and THEN add those extra spices so they are really effective. Thanks for another great tutorial, Joe!
Only with this video, i have learned two big essentials.thanks.More videos on vocal mixing and electronic music (most on drum kits and bass),please.regards.
Great video as alwaysJoe. As someone who just does home mixes (in a similar music genre), this is ideal for me. The stock plug ins are all I really need for my little musical doodles. 😀👍
Wow, great info. Maybe its just because it sounds louder, but i find using two eqs helps make the individual notes stand out more. Talking about a single acoustic guitar.
Great Tute - thanks I've saved this to go back to. I realize that I master my voice based on my dislike of the sound of my voice, to try to make it closer to what I'd like it to be, rather than what a "good production sound" for MY VOICE should be. Be objective not subjective. I look forward to going back through this again. Thanks.
Very helpful... I've been using Izotope for quite a while as the presets are the same in coming from PT, but so see how you've done it here is bigly helpful.
You should do a fast pace video on all the stock plugins and what they have to offer...... Also this was a simple and great way to teach about eq and compression.
I have a deep seeded appreciation for learning the importance of mastering the basics of the recording craft. these are elements that need to exist on almost every recording and you and Gregor present them quite well. Because of my acquiring Studio One 5 Professional, my subscription to Sphere and the wonderful instruments I've bought and learned over the years, my muse has been unleashed.Thank you all so much for your continued contributions. I can't wait to progress from the essentials that you so masterfully instruct Joe, to learning the eccentric methods of the industry used in the works of Peter Gabriel, XTC, The Police and others. I look forward to a little George Clinton or Steve Lillywhite methods in the future. Til then, Thanks for schooling me in the methods you have mastered. All of you at PreSonus have my unending gratitude. I have so much more to learn from all of you. Thank You..
Hi Joe ,I am just starting looking at effects etc, when you put the delay on just the vocals I thought it was way to much (what do I know) but when you played it back in the mix it sounded awesome.. I certainly have a lot to learn about how to use effects on vocals.Thank you Joe for this "eye opener"
Those tips in the first few minutes should make all the difference for many including myself. I'm still troubleshooting but I bought a $1,300 mic and it sounds the same as my $100 mic so I think the problem is coming from how I'm actually recording.
Your explanation of compression is great - turn down the loud parts and then turn EVERYTHING up. "Fixing is not Mixing"... Ba-boom- ching !!.... classic Joe 😂😂
Ultimately, garbage in, garbage out. But adequate in can be good out. Capturing the performance is best possible foundation. Looking like the next live mix critique won't be until after the 1st of the year?
Joe you’re the man, Studio One is an amazing DAW but definitely one of the things that made me do the change were you and Gregor because I can always rely on you to learn how to use my tools properly. Question, is there any number that I could call as a presonus sphere user for direct questions on technical stuff, software or hardware? There’s always little things that you encounter that are hard to find an explanation of. Thank you as always
"you can get....great sounding mixes....using the plug ins that come with your software...". This is a true statement. I had a high paying client, and on a personal dare, I mixed the entire project using nothing but S1 Pro plug ins. I sent a first draft over to see if they'd approve...and they posted the project before responding to me. Don't go down the plug in rabbit hole...work on getting good mixes with the tools at your disposal.
Sorry didn’t finish my comment Long story short my old windows xp pc died so I decided to up grade with presonus instead rof pro tools. I have a lot to Learn Thank you for your helpful videos Jerry in Ga.
These videos are incredible...Thank you for posting them! I’m new to home studio work. Can you direct me to a video of yours that might show how to make changes to just a small section of a song? Highlight a measure and add effect sort of thing. Thanks again.
Love this style of teaching Joe, coming to the point, but not too fast as a lot of other channels, where I can't remember anything, this is a waste of time for me, so please go on with your style, thanks
Excellent video! Very helpful indeed. If there was an “after compression blob preview button” in S1’s compressor to see what the blobs would look like while adjusting the compressor settings - in real time mind you - and displayed maybe on an adjacent track along with the original, it would be fantastic.
Thank you for this video. I have been trying to teach compression to a friend without a lot of verbal explanation. Once he hears this I think we can repeat it then move on to eq, compression Correlation
Might be a stupid request but I'm been on a engineering journey and now it finally time to learn how to mix vocals n stuff myself. I usually have somebody do it for me but you teach a man to fish then you know . Can you make a video breaking down all the plug in and what they do ?
Hi Joe, I just wanna ask if you if you can make a small clip showing how to create buses and FX channels please. And how to name them correctly also thanks.
Good job explaining Eq and compression, I use similar settings, what's your thoughts on spreading the vocal left and right, and another take down the middle for a fuller sounding vocal? Can you get a doubler effect with standard plugins?
nice one really enjoyed seeing thing this! Can you shed some light on how you export your stems(All Busses Rhythm, Bass, Keys, Vocals, BGV) with send Fx. I find it Very Hard! Solo That Buss and Bounce. Any Workaround??
Just starting out. I can play a heck of a song on my Yamaha arranger work station but,,, I need to know how to make great mix using my piano and instruments on Studio One. Also using the plugins. Thank you.
