Mk 2 Citroen C1/Peugeot 108/Toyota Aygo boot leaks and how I fixed them

In today’s video, I’m handing over to Liz because and to her credit, she insists on doing all the work on her own car. While we were in the Mk 2 C1, Liz drove around a corner and we both hears a water sloshing noise. I knew that the Mk 2 also had water ingress issues, but didn’t realise that it was that bad. Liz removed the trim pieces in the rear to investigate and found that the nearside rear light cluster was loose, but that was because it wasn’t reassembled correctly by Citroen when the car had some work done under warranty. The centre stop light was removed (with great difficulty!) and we found that the spoiler was full to the brim with water! It was surprising to see it was that full and we realised that it would probably end up corroding from the inside out if it was left like that. Liz drained the water and dried it out as far as reasonably practicable and then sealed the housing with clear silicone, just like I did when I sealed the rear of my Mk 1 C1 - see a link to that video below. I hope this video helps anyone with a Mk 2 city bug who is suffering from the same issue.

You would think after the centuries of production cars they could make one that doesn’t allow water ingress especially after the mark 1 C1 issues they could of sorted out a fix from factory on the Mark 2 C1 model it’s just shoddy design and workmanship on Citroen’s part ! Great video on how to find and fix the problem 👍

Thanks for saving me a heap of grief and time. I would have done the same as you to trace the root cause of the ingress. I managed to remove the light unit with a very slim flat screwdriver on the top clips. I applied sealer with a gun and, because I'm paranoid, stuck the nozzle in the wiring gaiter as well. I would also recommend fully assembling the unit before refitting it: especially if you have man-sized hands. Top marks guys.

Here in the Netherlands I had the same problem with the top level brake light. First I was stupid to go to the Citroen dealer. The mechanic struggled a lot to remove the complete light and even broke it. Paid too much for a new one and after one month again water inside... :( My solution was even more simple: I just removed the inside lid, now the little water that gets inside can evaporate easy on dry days. No more water problems for 1,5 year so far. Of coarse some dust could get in now but I checked a few times and there is hardly any dust.

So pleased that I came across this vid! I am new to the Citroen C1 which my wife recently purchased. One of the first C1 Mark 2’s which also came with the dreaded water leak into the boot. I would not have thought about water leaking in through the rear high level stop light had I not seen the video. Having taken off the small plastic plate behind the lamp, the water spilled out. Well done that lass for providing such a great instruction on the fix. All sorted now (I hope). Time will tell. Thanks again

The common reason the nut is missing is the garage have dropped it when removing or putting it back and it’s difficult to retrieve. Leaving it loose allows water to leak in through that thread which is why there is a seal on the outside, but it only works if tight.

@12m50s - Using the silicon inside of the light fitting surely risks you basically glueing it into position? Surely better to do it from the outside only where you can remove it just with a plastic tool/credit card?
@DABDIY
@DABDIY 9 месяцев назад
Silicone doesn’t stick as you seem to suggest it does. Once it’s cured, it forms a dry waterproof seal that comes away from the bodywork with a very small pull. Once the initial seal is broken, the rest peels away nice and easy.

Hi just seen this video. I wish I had spotted it before as i went through exactly same route. Good luck getting the brake light out! My head went and I smashed it out! Absolutely stupid fitting. Siliconed a second hand one in and seems to have worked. I also put a stick on seal on the body above the plugs as per Mk1 to direct water down and also had a slight leak at bottom of hatch which needed trim/seal adjusted. Question: I got a space saver wheel to replace the stupid repair kit and got the correct spare holder nut affair but if I fastened it down tight the wheel makes a noise over rough ground so it’s loose at the moment and it’s not too bad. It’s like the boot floor is too flimsy or i have a wrong wheel supplied! Anyone else had this issue?

The issue was completely resolved, yes. I went for the nuclear option of removing the bulkhead vents and welded them up just to be different from everyone else on RU-vid. The normal method of sealing these is to take them off, remove the damaged seal, fill the channel with silicone (don’t be shy with it!) and then clip them back in. Might also we worth smearing the overspill around the join between the vent and bodywork. That’ll make sure that they’re fully sealed.

I believe you could be right. I've only managed to unclip two of the clips , the ones at the top of the door , the other two clips are just to fiddly & risky for me to tackle, unless I come up with a new idea. I can make a gap wide enough along the top & sides of the light to mask it off and apply the silicone and clip it back. I don't believe leaking from the bottom of the light will be a problem but I'll keep a check on it. I'm going to have another go at it later... Thanks for the video , it did help a lot.

Just e guess. There should be drainage holes in the bottom of the hatch / boot door. Those holes are probably clogged and thats why the whole door is filled with water. When opening the hatch all water will off course flow to the top of the door with no escape.

I had considered that, so I went hunting for these drain holes. I found none, so my best guess here was that the manufacturer was relying on the light housing to seal the inside of the spoiler from the elements. Maybe I’ve missed the drain holes though. If you know where they are, please point them out to me!

@@DABDIY There is a plug on both outer sides of the hinges. In the video the passenger side (grey plug) can be seen at 9:22. Could these be the drain holes? So the plugs shouldn't be there anymore?

I’ll take a look at those next time I’m in the guts of that car again and let you know what I find on my Instagram 👍🏻
