This video shows the disassembly, internal workings and repair of the 2010 onward Kia Sorento door latch mechanism that fails due to a small internal spring that fractures. Spring is part of the lock mechanism that causes the handle to no longer engage the latch system so you cannot open the door from outside.

My door refused to open today after telling someone how the car hasn’t given me any trouble! Hence the frantic searching on RU-vid for help! Thankfully I have found your video and I’ll be giving it a go soon. Thanks.

Wow! Thanks so much! Saved me $300 + shipping as i have to replace 3 door actuators! All of them have the same spring issue! Used a safety pin for the spring.

I followed this procedure today on a 2011 Sorento, and it worked great. Many thanks for posting this helpful video! After drilling out the rivets, for reassembly I was able to run a 4mm thread tap through the metal bracket, and used a couple of 25mm M4 set screws. The third rivet hole which goes into plastic was not strong enough to take a new thread, so I used a 30mm M4 set screw with locknuts. The tip on how to make up a replacement spring is particularly helpful. Thanks again.

This is great! Thank you for sharing. I just did this on both front doors after they failed within months of each other. Saved me $150 on parts alone. I was a little intimidated by the idea of drilling out and re tapping the metal plate, but it all went very smoothly and easily. Don't bother with any of the shortcuts like paper towels as they don't work very long, just replace the spring. The hardest part is getting the lock module out of the door. Great video!

@@stuarts7x what size is the spring? Any chance you measured?
@stuarts7x
@stuarts7x 4 года назад
@@adamlogan384 The OD of the spring is 7mm and the length is immaterial for our use but mine was 38mm. The diameter of the spring steel is 0.7mm. I purchased the set as buying springs online can be tricky as it is difficult to ascertain the tension but you might be able to find one with the measurements..

Just disassembled mine, from a 2011 Sorento. It had 4 screws holding it together. Two rivets, one motor and a broken spring. This is more of a practice run, as I replaced the entire assembly with an OEM one from Amazon. At least I'll be ready for the next time. Thanks for the guide. I wonder if it's a manufacturing defect, perhaps a nick on the spring. They all seem to break at the same place. Thanks for the guide.

I may try placing a piece of fairly dense sponge behind the end of the slider forcing it to stay forward similar to what the broken spring did

Hi. My Sorento in 10 years old already. Good to know for others though. Unfortunately even if you have one replaced under warranty they just put the same part in which will fail in due course. There is no upgraded part available! Regards, Stuart.

Update Since my Kia "in Servce" date was August 2010 I have now been denied in spite of special request as the failure occurred back in the Covid shutdown days So this video is a major help. Anyone know of a spring kit available in USA or Canada that works? THANKS KIA for nothing .Thanks Stuart big time

thank you. fixed mine too. very good video. one question...why your latch assembly has 2 actuators? mine is a sorento 2011 the latch assembly looks the same as yours but i only have one actuator
@stuarts7x
@stuarts7x Год назад
Unfortunatly I do not know. The ones I have done have always been the same. It may be that your Sorento is slightly newer so the actuator was changed from 2011 onwards.

My Kia Sorento 2011 has issues on door lock twice. The first time, the door on driver's side won't unlock from inside. That got fix by the dealer. Then after 3 years, the the door won't unlock from the outside! It seems to be a common problem on his doors! This should have been recalled by Kia!
@stuarts7x
@stuarts7x 5 лет назад
I entirely agree. I tried the main dealer but they were very unhelpful. The issue is that there is no upgraded part to fit so even if Kia replaced faulty units they will still fail in due course. I did get Kia to disable the auto door locking at 15mph function as this operated all the locks every time you drive away. Each cycle must put strain on the spring that breaks so hopefully this will reduce the number of occurrences.

stuarts7x Hello i just followed your repair video. Nice job. And thanks for sharing. I haven’t put it back in the vehicle just yet. Its dark out now. Will get back on it tomorrow. But it works manually. Thanks again. How did they disable the auto door lock. I would like to do the same. As you state it will lower the amount of times it locks.
@stuarts7x
@stuarts7x 4 года назад
@@gm19651 Sorry for the very late reply but here goes anyway. The disabling of the auto door lock needs a computer. Only expensive ones will do it or you need to go to the dealer.

I followed the steops in this video and managed to fix the spring using the old one - I just unwound it a loop and it still works pefectly. I have one problem though. My driver door now won't lock and the automnatic central locking is trying to initiate as I'm driving around. I've obviously not got the reattachment of the cables right but not sure how they should be. This video skips that part. Does anyone have any advice?
@stuarts7x

The only time I have had this issue was when I fitted a replacement unit and it was a slightly different part number. Otherwise check that the wiring is securely attached. Hope you find the problem, 🤞.

stuarts7x I had it all stripped and just couldn’t get everything out of the door. I built it all back up and gave up. I had another go and realised I had left the bolt in the handle in the outside of the door! Out it came and all is well!

i can see why you did not show the reassembly process. There must have been a lot of cursing and yelling. Mine broke while the child lock was engaged. There is no way to open the door from either the inside or outside. This is a major safety issue. This whole design is a giant kludge and it is not the only thing in a Kia car that is this way. The design engineers are smoking something when they do this and they just want to frustrate owners. It is backfiring. I have had several Kias but no more. I am done with this foolishness. Thanks for tackling this issue.
