Omg thank you! You saved me so much money. Went to scrap yard and tested for ohms. Found one that was good and pulled the electromagnet off and swapped it out. 20$ fix and about an hour's worth of time. Haven't had a/c for 5 years. It feels so good

Oh man! This is the best video ever I have seen since the ac in my car stopped. I am going to check the magnate hopefully it’s the reason why it is not working. Thanks a lot

I've got a 2001 gti vr6 and you just saved me over 1000$ with this video! Mine was a little more challenging as I had to go in from the bottom, but thank you so much! Ordered the coil on amazon, boom working ac! Thanks again!

Can't believe how unbelievably clean your car is. I'm in Canada and your car is cleaner under the hood then a brand new car after one winter. Wow

Did this job on an ALH today. I had to drop the a/c compressor down to get enough room to get the snap rings out. A two jaw puller made quick work of getting the pulley off.

Awesome video. Gave me the courage to tackle the job. My A.C. is now ice cold again. The only thing I did differently was to use a spanner for a coil over adjuster to hold the clutch in place so I could loosen the spindle nut.

Great video!!! I did it to my jetta and it work great, you don't have to buy a clucth holder, just buy a good pair of snap rings because is a pain in the a.. To take the off and put back. From $400 i spend 60$ on ebay and $20 on harbor freight.

Thank you. Now it is my turn to try fix 2001 jetta golf compressor and no power coming to compressor. I don't know where the power coming from the next to the compressor. Is it called air conditioning control module??? I need some help for sure. I don't want to pay almost $2000. If I could do it, probably I can do it under $300. Thank you again for the good job you showed us.

Yes. It is. Good luck finding that in stores. I am currently doing the same repair. Waited 2 days for this tool to come in. And now I go and try to use it. The posts don't match up at all with the holes in the pulley. And the holes are smaller than the posts on the tool. Anyone know of a fix????
@greasystrangler6250
@greasystrangler6250 6 лет назад
There probably is a tool, but if you separate the two halves of your circlip removers, you can put the "pin" loosely into one of those holes, and the other part will sit against those large circles. Edit: You will need the 90° kind, not the ones that the guy in this video is using. Screw proprietary tools. My circlip remover was a BluePoint one, though they all look the same.

Think this coil replacement could have been done without un-mounting the compressor? Is there enough space to pull the clutch and pulley off with the compressor still attached?
@John76546-x
@John76546-x 3 года назад
It would be tight, but yes I believe it can be done. There was a hole in the frame across from my compresser that 1/4 inch extention would have fit.

I've got a 2006 vw passat, and mine doesn't really look like that...do you know if I'm able to replace JUST the pulley on that ac condenser, or do I need to replace the whole thing?
@John76546-x
@John76546-x 5 лет назад
If the inside part does not spin separate from the outer pulley, what the serpantine belt is on, I do not believe they repair this way. Those have an internal mechanism that turns the compressor on and off and i do not know if they are repairable.

BTW, double check that your alternator clutch pulley isn't starting to go bad. To me, It looked like your tensioner was jumping around maybe a bit more than it should be.

Awesome video! Keep up the good work. After reinstalling everything and tightening the center bolt, the clutch is now always engaged. When I loosen the center bolt, everything spins freely. What could be the reason for this? Thank you
@linwizz2126
@linwizz2126 5 лет назад
There should be shims on the shaft under the clutch, they are missing or you need a thicker one. There needs to be a small air gap between the clutch and pulley when the coil is off.
@PRgabo
@PRgabo 5 лет назад
@@linwizz2126 Thank you for your reply. There was just one thin shim, like the one in the video. I had to remove that shim and use a thicker washer to get the correct gap. AC is now back to nice and cold🙌.
@jonathanmeneses168
@jonathanmeneses168 4 года назад
Linwizz hello, are they tiny shims? At the end of the threads for the clutch plate? I only remember a much larger shim at the back after the lock ring

I've got a short video of what happened to my pulley but in not sure how to upload it into the comments here...its almost like the inner part of pulley separated from the outer, and I have no idea how, why, or what would cause that
@zrazieli

Thank you for the video; it's helped me out quite a bit! Question for you: On your repair, did you have any clutch material left on the pulley? After 300k miles, I'd expect it to have been completely worn out. Mine has only 140k and the clutch material is worn down flush with the metal mating surface of the pulley, and is paper thin, and crumbling off. PS I'm in the midst of doing this on my '03 GTI. I had to remove the throttle body in order to pull the alternator, and I had to remove the washer fluid bottle and the throttle intake hose to make room for the snap ring pliers. But I was able to remove both compressor mounting bolts from the top of the car without removing the wheel or even the splash guards.

Did this end up working long term? My service manual says there's a thermal fuse inside the magnet, so if the compressor is failing/getting too hot, it blows. Did you see any sign of that fuse when you removed the old magnet? Thanks!!

So I was just looking into this myself. There is a sticker on the compressor If it says sd7v16 I think it’s this www.amazon.com/dp/B071GQ7FLL?psc=1&smid=A1DNWVGXLP0ZLY&ref_=chk_typ_imgToDp This is what I ordered to repair my ac. I was told it was a bad compressor. 1k to fix. I’ll just go ahead and try this repair before looking into a compressor

Hey John how are you? I have the same issue but I would like to exchange some info because my magnet is working fine but still not engaging. Btw, I can explain how to fix the foam issue?
@John76546-x
@John76546-x 6 лет назад
How do you know magnet is working? If you, using a stick or long screw driver or such, push on the front of the clutch with the engine running and A/C turned on; does the clutch engage? If it does then the space between magnet and clutch is too large and needs to be reduced by removing or changing spacers. Could also be week magnet. The foam, I needed to removed the blower few months ago and the flapper door foam was good. Seemed to be some foam between plastic pieces that is breaking off and I am letting it go as long as the heat and cold air work.
@washingtonmorales3201
@washingtonmorales3201 6 лет назад
Sorry, I was getting false readings. Now I got open loop between the two pins at the magnet socket just like you. But at the very beginning I was checking for battery voltage at the female side and was only getting 3.3? I haven't tested the pressure switch and off course, since the clutch not engaging can't recharge the system.
@washingtonmorales3201
@washingtonmorales3201 6 лет назад
I just want something else to confirm it's the magnet. Any help?? And yeap, the blower exchanger doors are the issue causing all the foam. I peeled off all the foam and plastic and cover them in high temp aluminum tape, multiple layers did a pretty good job until the magnet gave up.

Those are snap ring pliers. You should be able to buy a pair at any auto parts store.
@rebinny

It's actually the tool at 15:44. I stopped being lazy and found it at autozone. they call it an a/c clutch holding tool. I think I blew the clutch by putting 12 volts on the ground wire. I got big spark. Then later clutch would not engage with 12 volts on right wire. Anyway thanks for responding so quickly. Appreciate the vid.
