Very new to retrofitting/ coding. When you installed the mk6 wheel on the mk5 did you have to do coding or just replace parts?
@MatthewTaylor3

Coding needed to be done to move me from the DDP protocol to using BAP for this new steering wheel

So the steering wheel control module that ends with CD works too? isn't only the module that ends with CH? Thanks and great video!!
@MatthewTaylor3
@MatthewTaylor3 2 года назад
The module ending with "CD" works for ME, because I had previously replaced the steering rack with a different steering rack that was available locally. This might not be the same for you. If you post the module you have currently, I can tell you what options you have

Can you teach how to retrofit a mk7 racing steering wheel onto mk5? Without the cruise control
@MatthewTaylor3
@MatthewTaylor3 3 года назад
I've never done it before, but the process is the same, however not all buttons will work (especially the horn). The MK7 uses a different protocol. There is some rewiring of the steering wheel control module that has to be done to get most of the buttons working according to the forums I've read.

@@MatthewTaylor3 ok thank you man
@MatthewTaylor3
@MatthewTaylor3 3 года назад
@@Tommy369x I looked back at the issue. The number of changes you would have to do to your MK5 to make ALL the MK7 buttons including the horn work would be equivalent to swapping in a good chunk of MK7 wiring and modules to the point that your MK5 is electrically a MK7 and you could even have a different VIN. It wouldn't be worth the hassle in my opinion. If you were in it just to get SOME of the buttons to work, and the aesthetic appeal then it might be an interesting project. At the end of the day, you still want to know that your airbag WILL work in an accident. Unless #RaceCar

@@MatthewTaylor3 Alright man that’s some good info to know from you, would vcds be able to do the modifications? My current plan is to fit the Scirocco R cluster and steering wheel onto Mk5, what do you think?
@MatthewTaylor3
@MatthewTaylor3 3 года назад
@@Tommy369x yes, this would be a straightforward swap as it is the same as the MK5/MK6. VCDS and OBDeleven can do the needed coding for both. The only challenge you would have is the immobiliser pairing if you don't have the original PIN. You would use AVDI or similar tool to place the cluster in service mode and add a blank transponder

Whats good my dude, i just installed the new mk6 cluster on the mk6 everything working great, i even got rid of the annoying steering angle light, only question is that in the screen says ( key not in range ) and that message wont go away any sugestions? Can i get rid of that with vcds, and im gonna install as well the mk6 steering wheel, wanna know how can i do so i can get that steering buttons work, thanks a lot, you have instagram? Or some network that i could contact you? Thanks again apreciate your help a lot.
@MatthewTaylor3
@MatthewTaylor3 2 года назад
The "key not in range" is the immobilizer in the instrument cluster not seeing a matching key (transponder chip) from the coil that surrounds the ignition barrell. This can't be coded out in VCDS, but you can do a woraround where you could buy a new transponder pill (Megamos ID-48) from anywhere cheap like ebay or AliExpress for about $3 for one. You can then use a cloned tool like AVDI to pair this transponder pill to your instrument cluster. You would either place it inside your key fob, or tape/glue it near the ring around your ignition barrel. Your instrument cluster will now have a "matching key" and not show you that message anymore. The thing about the MK6 steering wheel is to ensure that you have the Revision-C clockspring (if you don't have it already) and also the correct Steering Control Module (under the steering column) that supports both LIN 1.3 and LIN 2.0 . This ensure the MK5 and MK6 components communicate with each other. I'm working on a network that you can contact me on. I should be able to get back to you in short order with it.
@valmorefaria195
@valmorefaria195 2 года назад
@@MatthewTaylor3 ook thanks, now i understand, so for that I don’t need any coding right? Just buy a transponder pill and the tool? Can vcds work as well? Once i do that would i be able to use the left button on the cluster that shows the info bc rn is not working i guess i bc of the key
@MatthewTaylor3
@MatthewTaylor3 2 года назад
@@valmorefaria195 for what I wrote above, you don't need to do any coding with VCDS. You would just buy a "virgin" transponder pill and the tool. VCDS can't work for you as you don't have any original keys to begin with (hence the key not in range error). Also, UVE ROSS from Ross-Tech stated that they decided not to design VCDS to do any immobilizer work in this manner for legal reasons. You would use a tool like ODIS or VCP to do this, BUT a legit copy of ODIS would need you to have a genuine key that is pared to the instrument cluster for you to add a second key using the GEKO system. The left button on the cluster should always work at all times, but the "key out of range" message will always take priority.
@valmorefaria195
@valmorefaria195 2 года назад
@@MatthewTaylor3 Would a locksmith be able to eliminate that message on the display, if i order the transponder pill, place it where the original one goes and let them do the work? Also if i get the steering wheel, clock spring, and module from the mk6 could i be able to control the display by the steering wheel, im a little worried about the left cluster button not doing anything, I don’t think the cluster is bad it only has 74k miles
@MatthewTaylor3
@MatthewTaylor3 2 года назад
@@valmorefaria195 Yes, a VAG locksmith can eliminate that message either by an immo defeat in the cluster or by pairing a blank transponder pill (hence you would then have an official key). The Clockspring HAS to be a Revision-C (by part number) The module can't come from a MK6 unless it communicates with BOTH LIN 1.3 and LIN 2.0 (these are DDP and BAP protocols specifically). A MK6 steering wheel control module would have to support both protocols for it to work (hence a MK6 only module would not work). I'll find and post the Ross-Tech guide that states which one your should buy based on the module that you have in your car currently.

You can't code the two slave modules under address #16, just the master one. You replaced the clock spring to the part number ending with "C"? @MatthewTaylor3
@MatthewTaylor3 2 года назад
The MK6 cluster will slide right in. You WILL have to do some electronic immobiliser work, and get a new transponder pill to complete the process. I've wanted to do a dashboard swap, but my car is a 2-door, and I didn't know how the dashboard would line up with the factory door cards as they seem to be shaped differently.

@@MatthewTaylor3 thanks for your answer, do you think they could do that if i bring to a vw dealership, or if so they sell they kit in ebay “cluster keyfob, and the two key cylinders, should i be good if i install a used set with factory keys as a combo?, and also the mk6 radio is gonna line up just fine with your factory door panels, everything in the dashbord is direct fit from mk6 to mk5 same mounting brackets as well
@MatthewTaylor3
@MatthewTaylor3 2 года назад
@@valmorefaria195 Your VW dealer will not assist you with the retrofit for safety reasons. There are eBay kits that you can buy and simply install. However, swapping out a key barrel can be labour intensive if you are technical to do the job yourself (but you did swap an entire dashboard, so this would also be easy for you). If you change you ignition barrel, you will want to change your dorlock an glovebox lock to match as well (so you can just walk around with 1 set of keys)

@MatthewTaylor3
@MatthewTaylor3 2 года назад
I forgot to mention the fact that the ABS unit itself WILL factory reset itself, and as such its coding will be a string of "zeroes". It is important for you to borrow VCDS, OBDeleven, VCP, AVDI, or a similar tool to backup, or at least make a note of the existing coding of the ABS unit. You will have warning lights on your new cluster, but these will disappear after a routine test drive. The fault code that will be present is your power steering LED as there is ABS unit would have done some sort of factory reset. Once you have restored the previous coding on the ABS and do a test drive, all other error messages should disappear. You also need some sort of software (like VCDS) to code your new instrument cluster to display your preferred units to your liking or to set your preferred oil-change intervals. Your instrument cluster retains the option for the brake-pad wear sensor and the seatbelt warning. You would need to toggle these options accordingly if you got the cluster from a vehicle that has a different configuration than yours. The Ross-Tech forums can give you your original ABS coding based on VIN and ABS module part numbers.

@valmorefaria195 2 года назад
@@MatthewTaylor3 well, a friend of mine have vcds, should i be good with that one only or do i need another type of software, and so with the abs light or any other light on, will that actually make the car run or not being a able to brake properly? Or is only a error light bc the coding is different? Thanks
@MatthewTaylor3
@MatthewTaylor3 2 года назад
@@valmorefaria195 having VCDS is fine. The wheel brakes will still physically operate without coding. ABS, will not work in emergency braking conditions without coding. The error light would be because the ABS unit will have NO coding (as though you just installed it in the vehicle for the first time). Your error light for the steering will also be illuminated until you restore the coding for the ABS unit and do the test drive.

@@MatthewTaylor3 so in order to get the coding from my stock abs module, i have to first conect the vcds with my original cluster and then do the same and transfer the coding that vcds will provide on my new cluster right?
@MatthewTaylor3
@MatthewTaylor3 2 года назад
@@valmorefaria195 Yes. Just to be clear: You would be reading and making a note of the coding in module #3/address #3 (ABS unit) with your original instrument cluster connected. You would then restore that coding when you have the new cluster installed. This is also the right time to make a note of the mileage of your existing instrument cluster if you want to maintain that. Restoring it would be done using a tool like AVDI when the instrument cluster is in Service Mode.

Does the mk6 climate control work without a problem on mk5?
@MatthewTaylor3
@MatthewTaylor3 3 года назад
Yes, the MK6 climate control worked perfectly in my MK5 GTI. The only thing I needed to do was to connect a splice and reconnect a single wire from one harness to another so that the climate control REMEMBERS the l last settings when I switch the ignition off. That was easy to do. I think it was either pin 16 or pin 20. The only thing that does NOT work is the defroster on the rear windshield. I reside in Jamaica (a tropical country, so I wouldn't use it anyway). The button does light up when you press it, but my car would need another MK6 module installed somewhere else to make it work

@@MatthewTaylor3 i installed yesterday this climate on passat b6 variant which had that old style climate too and the defroster doesnt work,all of my windows are foggind,is it possible to fix it?
@MatthewTaylor3
@MatthewTaylor3 3 года назад
@@Benko_DieseL It IS possible to fix it, but I can't find the URL that I previously used. It requires getting a module from the MK6 (still PQ-35 chassis). You would be able to get all that you need from a 2010 Jetta (which still has the MK5 Jetta shape in a specific geographic region). I don't even remember what type of module it was that was needed to make the defroster work. The issue, in this case, wasn't a change in communication protocol (between MK5 and MK6), but the fact that the defroster was handled by another module. It is similar to how for the MK5, there is both a Central Electronics module and a Comfort System, but the MK6 merges the two in a single Body Control module. Another example is where the MK5 has the rear passenger doors as independent modules, and the MK6 has them as "slave" modules to the Driver and Passenger door respectively. If you could find the right module from a 2010 Jetta (MK5 shape) and transferred the appropriate coding, then it would work. I'll try to research what module you need for the defroster.. When I press my defroster button, I do hear a relay "click" under the dashboard (below the steering wheel), so i know the wiring to that point is good.
@Benko_DieseL
@Benko_DieseL 3 года назад
@@MatthewTaylor3 what kind of a module is that? I was just opening it again but the problem lies on the rear sode heaters on the window dont work and rear door windows dont defrost so my question is,where is the defroster located when it defrosez the windows
@MatthewTaylor3
@MatthewTaylor3 3 года назад
@@Benko_DieseL when your Passat was stock, it is either module #9 or #46 that controls this. Now you would need a newer revision of the #9 module. This is usually located under the dashboard above the pedals. I don't know what variant of that part number you would need, but a 2010 Jetta is a good starting point. The wiring is different too, so you might not consider that task worth it. I was going to take one from a B7 Passat, but when I saw the wiring differences, I scrapped that idea.
