In this video, we talk about the soundaktor on MK7 GTI and Golf R's. We also show you how to turn it off with the OBDeleven. We demonstrate how to turn it off via an app as well as manually much like you would expect with a Vagcom.
All coding in the video was performed via OBDeleven

My advice? Just unplug the soundaktor. There are a couple videos on how to do it on RU-vid. All you have to do is get under the windshield wiper cowl and disconnect it. I did it in about 5 minutes, and it was a good decision, not to mention free.

I think they should have put the sound actor in the back where the exhaust is. However, I actually don't mind it. I can listen to loud music and still hear the engine revving so I can shift.

Also, you can just remove the rain tray and unplug the mic.

Yup, that's the big drawback of OBDeleven. Carista and VCDS don't have a credit system.

Christopher Thomas people get out of hand. I agree, I enjoy it. It adds to the driving experience, makes shifting and driving the vehicle by ear easier when I've got the windows up and the AC on.

I tried doing this on my 2013 S5 but when I try the output test like shown in the video it says “not active” does this mean mine doesn’t have it? It’s a premium model with all options, sport diff, B&O etc….. it allows me to change values through OBEleven and through the long coding I can change it but I can’t get the “sound test” to see if it’s working…..any thoughts on this?

When I’m in sport mode, the soundaktor makes this annoying rattling sound in the dash. Is this fixable?

Do I need pro version to turn it off. Says on my 2015 Audi A6 not supported when I try to turn it off. It clearly has one though

Erik Lindemann bro just wanna know how to unplug it? I tried it on my 17 gti and I found that it's pretty much impossible to reach the plug underneath. Any other way?

Haven't i seen this used in other cars ( may have even been a vw ) to change the tone of the soundaktor to mimic the engine tone of a different engine, like a 5 cylinder or something like that ? The video i saw had like 4 or 5 different settings of what kind of engine you wanted it to sound like haha, that would be addition to just turning it on or off.

I mean people who turn it off get intakes and downpipe for louder sound, which is confusing becuase don't we like more sound? What's the reason of turning it off besides the " it's fake noise" reason

Would this work on a Mk 6 GTI? Only some of the Mk 6 had the sound pipe -- a lot of them used one of the Soundaktor modules instead.

On my Golf R I have it set on Individual mode. In the settings I have the engine on Race but the engine sound on Eco. Surely this is the soundaktor off?

Need help! Just hooked new dongle and paired but I left dongle in Port over night (is this a bad!??) Car won't turn off and is going crazy with beeps and noises. It seems to have drained battery? hoping that's the case. What to do!? thank you

In the Golf R, yes. In the GTI, I feel like it sounds pretty similar with and without the Soundaktor. I unplugged mine recently, and it was a good decision.

Not sure what mic you have, but it makes your voice sound distorted. Very compressed nasal tone that is clipping.

Did i just see something in that app to control the start/stop that is on Audi ? I'd love to make it so I can 'not' have to turn that off every time I start the car and can the traction be turned off through that app?

The start/stop can be turned off, or set to remember it's last used setting, yes. traction control I do not know.

The Golf R soundaktor is hideous-sounding. I wouldn't do it. Just unplug the thing and enjoy hearing sound from the exhaust instead of the windshield.

As I understand, the soundaktor works by sending the sound vibrations through the windshield and dashboard so you can better sense what the engine is doing. Some degree of vibration in the dash is probably normal then

No, it transferes the sound of the engine so it sounds much more like a racecar in the cabin.

What do you mean when you say "use credits" with the OBD11?

If one is not sure how to use OBD11... one can use credit (in app purchased points) to have the app do the adaptation / coding for you. Or at least that is my understanding of how things work.

Is this any relation to the growler on an e-golf? I would love to turn it off on ours. Unfortunately just unplugging the thing throws a trouble code. For those unfamiliar, the eGolf has an externally directed make engine noise system as a pedestrian warning. On US models only, it growls at peds until you get to 15 mph. Anticipated a regulation that didn’t happen. Would love a reversible way to shut it up, before I send some expanding foam down it’s sound outlet...

+Deutsche Auto Parts where you adjust mode (and DCC) sorry. there's a setting for either Normal or Sport interior engine sound. I'm guess normal isn't "off"

Paul, on one of your next episodes, can you advise if, on a MK7 GTI, there is a way to make all four of the daytime running lights (two on each side) light up? I hate that only the outer light up on the GTI, whereas on the Golf R, all four light up. I have the factory headlight upgrade so I don't want to purchase aftermarket. Can the OBDeleven do this?

I don't believe so, from what I've heard there isn't actually a light behind the rings to illuminate. That's why aftermarket is so popular.

Must be region /spec because in my 2016 GTI i can turn this off via the display. My modes are sport, normal and eco. Eco is off.

No. The Mk6 Soundaktor is located under the cowl on the passenger side and can be physically disconnected.

My 2005 Jeep Rubicon had an anti-hotwire feature that would disable the vehicle if somebody attempted to start the engine 3 times without the key. Does the MK7 Golf R have any anti-theft features?

From what I've researched, engine sound set to sport is 100% soundaktor volume, engine noise at normal is 40% volume. Drastic decrease, it's definitely not as noticeable set to normal

If you turn it off to 0% using the long coding, will it turn it off for all DCC modes or just for some of them. Is it possible to customize every mode differently? IE: 20% for comfort, 50% for normal and 90% for sport?

@GONE4EVER it turns your windscreen into a speaker, and plays a fake sound inside the car. So turning it off will you will only hear real sounds, and no more fake sounds from speakers

I did it in mine selecting engine sound = "eco" and now I believe the Soundaktor is just less annoying but still on, at lower intensity.

I've never heard anyone reference the OBDII as an OBD 11. Is that common?

OBDII is OBD "two", an on-board diagnostics protocol. OBD 11 is OBD "eleven" and it's just the name of the VW/Audi coding utility that plugs in to the OBD port.Two different things.

+cmanclan101 I think you might be confused as credits are only needed if you want to use apps. This is a 1 touch coding feature. You can code anything at no charge if you know how to perform this operation.

OBDeleven is much more beginner friendly. It does have some advanced fields for custom long-coding. VCDS might have some functionality that OBDeleven lacks, but I can't think of anything.

response from OBDeleven. Paul this would be good info to include with this part when shipped out. from OBDeleven: there is one important thing if you want to leave dongle connected. You must disconnect from car before closing the app, to do that go to My car and press red disconnect button at the bottom of screen. Battery drain example: You are checking Live data and device is in the loop of reading live data parameters from car and you just go out without disconnection, then dongle doesn't get request to stop read of live data and it is reading it all over the night
