How to use the MKS GEN L V1.0 board for 4 axis CNC Foam Cutters. This is an Arduino Mega 2560 with a RAMPS board as one unit. It has a couple of nice features for CNC Foam cutters.
Although this video was made for the MKS Gen L board all the information apply equally as well to the Arduino Mega 2560 and the RAMPS board.
The MKS GENL L has a few extra options which can make it a good choice for foam cutting
1. Use a 24-volt power supply that can power the hot wire as well.
2. External connectors for high current stepper drives using NEMA 23 motors or bigger.

Keith thanks for the vedio and sorry for your losses. Cheers for 2021. I am making a foam cutter, all metal, with Lead screws, smooth rods, sliding bearings, aluminium etc. One side tower is ready the other side is on making, if succeed I will post the photos and vids. but all due to inspiration from you. thanks again

@@rckeith I have most of the mechanics done from years ago, but never got around to completing it. In 3 years time, I hope, I will be an OAP and in need of something to occupy me and keep my old brain ticking over, this would be ideal! Look forward to the next video!

Outstanding series of videos ,tutorials , website content and documentation. Like so many others I appreciate the pace of the lessons and the reasoning behind each step in the process . It makes for a clear understanding of how the system works. Perfect .

Hi Keith, just come across your brilliant video, It’s great how you show the machine going the wrong direction then describe how to correct it. I think I will have a go at building a machine. Thanks again.

thanks again keith! Man i should have waited for your video, didnt realize you had that calculator to correct movement. I just sat there and tried numbers sending it 100mm out and back and adjusting until i found it lol. LIke always, filing this away mentally until i need it for later. As far as the jet flying issues i would suggest maybe a larger scale, wont be so twitchy, be easier to fly? Perhaps not scale sweep, move it forward a little to make it more enjoyable flight?

Hi Nathan Yes the new Goshawk is going to be bigger and have a Clark-y airfoil. My old Nitro BAE Hawk had a less sweep and flew great. I only recently sold it when I stopped flying nitro engines. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-my_BPUEB_8g.html had it for about 15 years.

Hi Keith, thanks for all the great videos. During calibration, when I input "G1 U100 F50", it seems u axis moves in "cm", not "mm". What could wrong and how to correct it? I am using a MKS GEN L V2.1 board and programs on your website.
@rckeith
@rckeith Год назад
You probably have the steps/mm wrong. Have a look here rckeith.co.uk/grbl-hotwire-mega-5x-for-cnc-foam-cutters/ in the section Steps/MM

Thanks for your video. I am using the same board (MKS gen l v1) with Marlin. I have managed to make it work fine (including bed leveling). What I am mising is the spindle speed. So far, I am controlling with a potentiometer. Do you know how to wire it and control it?
@rckeith
@rckeith 3 года назад
Sorry I don't. The firmware is based on GRBL-MEGA-5X which I've modified slightly for the foam cutter. I don’t have any experience of Marlin

Hello Keith, hoping you're well, and thanks for the great work. I already got the MKS setup and now I'm in the software selection phase. Now, is LinuxCNC compatible with this hardware setup?
@rckeith
@rckeith 6 месяцев назад
No LinuxCNC doesn't work with this. It will only work with computers using the old parallel port or Mesa cards. This is because USB is not supported on LinuxCNC Hope that helps
@maryyyyaaa

@@rckeith I see! Thanks. But how about using it with a Raspberry Pi instead of a PC? From what I know, LinuxCNC works well with Raspberry Pi, but I'm not sure if it's compatible with the MKS hardware, and if we need firmware for it (say, GRBL's firmware?).

What kind of foam is that. I have not seen black before. Seems to cut cleanly.

It's just polystyrene foam here's a link to it where I get it from www.diy.com/departments/jablite-premium-polystyrene-insulation-board-l-1-2m-w-0-45m-t-50mm-pack-of-4/26831_BQ.prd
