The laces are low on purpose to reduce the pitchers ability to pretty much throw a no no every game. Kinda like moving from an aluminum bat to wood. Increase the difficulty of the game.

Check Down THANK YOU! Reading the comment section everyone kept bitching “I loved higher laces”. No shit Sherlock. If you don’t know why college has higher laces then stop playing or watching the game bc you’re a special kind of stupid. Pro athletes should be able to throw without laces let alone a college ball with big ass laces

To be honest Ive thrown with MLB balls all the way down to fat laced little league balls and the difference between the best and worst moving breaking ball is maybe as high as 10%. You just get a lower percentage of hanging pitches where your finger slipped past the laces with the fat laced baseballs.
@DozaSlayer

If someone like Grienke, Verlander, or Syndergaard pitches with a ball with higher laces, they would have so much grip that they might as well be pitching with a blitzball. That’s why the MLB ball is so smooth

Aren't the laces shorter because the breaking balls would be insane thrown by a pro? The high laces catch more air intensifying the break. That's why when pitchers and the ground scuff the laces the ump replaces them with a fresh one?

When I first began pitching in the minor leagues, I initially wasn't a fan of the flatter seams on the ball- I preferred the raised seams from my college/high school days, because that's what I was used to. However, as I got used to the flatter seams, I found that my curveball and slider had more break than they did when I used baseballs with raised seams. The tighter seams actually allow the baseball to rotate faster, thus increasing the amount of "break" (movement) you can achieve. You just have to learn the proper technique to utilize the flatter seams. It's not about how much "grip" you can get, but about how much torque you can apply on the ball. Now, I much prefer baseballs with flatter seams. Lower seams = less friction & less air resistance. Less friction = more velocity. Less air resistance = more rotation. More rotation = more movement.

Higher laces provide better movement on a curve ball. We had an umpire show up to a Little League All Star game with the wrong balls and I didn't catch it until halfway through the first inning when our pitcher's curve wasn't getting the movement it normally would. I had to explain to the catcher and pitcher the importance of the seams to pitching and to request a new ball if needed. Lower laces help the batter as well as the ball will travel further with lower laces (everything else being equal), so the higher the seams the better for the defense typically.

I was pitching in college in the early 1980’s when Diamond baseballs first came on the scene and they were the first high seam balls. Prior to that, all balls- Wilson, Rawlings, Worth and Spaulding- all had wide, flat seams. That is why the slider really emerged as the top pitch in baseball in that era; you could really press hard against the seam and get that “button” spin. I have no idea how today’s MLB pitchers can spin those slick balls with almost no seam...

When I played travel baseball we used different balls. I remember NCAA baseballs had very high seems. When i played high school and travel ball I swung an Easton Black Magic 35" 32 ounce 2-3/4" barrel. I am close to 6-7" and could mash a baseball. What i never realized was I would swing a 34.5" 29.5 ounce Easton Ultra light with faster pitchers. I didn't think bats varied that much but I picked up an Easton C Core 34" - 31 ounces back in 1993 and was playing at a big field 335' down each line 400' to center and the power alleys were about 375' and I hit a few home runs that traveled about 390' to 410' but when I switched to the Easton C Core I hit a ball we wheeled it out at 465' I hit it so well that i didn't feel anything and my teammates said that i cleared the fence by 100 feet and it was better than any BBCOR bat and probably almost as good as some of the BESR bats or USSSA composite bats. I would like to know if Japanese baseballs travel farther than MLB baseballs. Apparently Japanese high school baseball bats are extremely hot right out of the wrapper. The farthest baseball i ever hit vs the farthest softball i ever hit I would say i probably hit a softball farther. Especially when I was using a Miken Freak or Ultra with a 44 core 525 lb compression softball. Even some 44 core 375 softballs traveled extremely far.

Hey coach I'm having trouble with using my hips with my swing and also where I should place my bat when I get into my stance. I need to develop a routine is what my travel ball coach said. And do we squash the bug or do we move towards the pitch? I've been told both
@YouGoPro

Yes, routine is important. We move towards the ball and do not squish the bug but if you’re having trouble w your hips maybe you need to think squish the bug. Sometimes feel isn’t real so it may be a help for you.

YouGoPro do you think I should maybe even try a little bit of a leg kick? I saw one of your videos about some workouts we can do before we go into actual BP and one of them the first one talked about using my hips? Should I maybe have more of a Bryce Harper approach? I'm not going to copy his stance or anything but I'm talking about his motion so like how he goes in and turns his hips than turns and finishes through out the ball. He uses his hips very well and have been watching his mechanics. Are there any other things I should try?

I'll tell you what ball sucked. That was the Diamond ball. We hated pitching with it because all a batter had to do was make decent contact with it and.... Home run!. MLB ball seemed to have lower seams and was harder to get to curve or get movement out of. Best ball... Wilson A1010.
@XxSEETH3RxX
@XxSEETH3RxX 5 лет назад
I played little league baseball through college and was not a big home run hitter. Although I did hit them from time to time. I was more of a doubles kind of a hitter. Anyway,the balls are so bouncy in the MLB that I could probably hit them there with little contact. I mean when everyone can hit them in MLB including pitchers then something is wrong. I mean there are almost 1,200 home runs this year and it just became June. Earlier in the season Paul Goldscmidt hit a home run that bounced after landing another 100 feet or so. MLB has become just home run derby and nobody cares about fundamentals.

It's splitting hairs, but I believe the difference isn't the laces, but the seams. Higher level balls have what are called rolled seams. Great video.
@YouGoPro
@YouGoPro 5 лет назад
Sorry I was using the words laces and seams interchangeably. Is there a difference? Can you elaborate on rolled seams? Thanks.
@matthewehiggins
@matthewehiggins 5 лет назад
My understanding (just a baseball fan and dad here) is rolled seams are when after the seams are stitched together, the seam is rolled or pressed down. Stitching the seam together creates a raised part under the stitches. Rolling not only presses the seams down but presses the laces down. This reduces grip for the pitcher and friction in the air.
@Unlitedsoul
@Unlitedsoul 5 лет назад
@@matthewehiggins Excellent point! However, the laces themselves are smaller with the pro level and even the newer collegiate level balls than with most other types. Also, the leather skin of the ball is generally much smoother as well.

You can create your own lace on the ball if you have long enough fingers....The ball is not juiced, hitters are striking out more than ever. Players and front offices are learning how to maximize value in their needed position. I have no ground to stand on because I have never pitched or hit at the AAA or AA level, but I do have a passion for the analytics of rotation analysis and launch angle. For position players, It ultimately comes down to the number of runs you can score.

When were you at Auburn? I pitched at Ole Miss until my shoulder blew out in the mid 90s. I can tell you this, the balls they were using last year are a lot smoother through the seams and have a slicker leather surface than were used back when I was pitching in the SEC. NCAA changed up the balls 3-4 years back due to wanting to create more of an offensive impact in the game. Oh, and FYI, the Northwest League is short season A ball, not AAA. It's probably from whatever team you played with right after being drafted. Was there a major diference between the Northwest League ball and the MLB ball?

is the lace hight then or depth the main reason why more home runs are being hit in the majors. 1 to bring the entertainment more to the game but also having lower laces causes less air friction so the ball travels more
@Unlitedsoul
@Unlitedsoul 5 лет назад
There are two effects in play here. 1, the ball is less grippable when thrown. As such, pitchers have less ability to control/command their pitches than they would with other balls. Also, the higher the laces, the more friction they create against your fingers when thrown. This actually helps generate more spin, and thus more movement (particularly with offspeed and breaking pitches). So, higher laces = more difficult to hit pitches. 2, the physics of the game. As you point out, tighter and lower laces reduce air drag and are thus more aerodynamic. This is one reason a college pitcher might throw 92 MPH, but just a couple of months later after being drafted... he's suddenly throwin 94-95 without any additional effort or mehcnial change to his delivery. This also generates more velocity and distance with well hit balls, and thus a higher chance at picking up a hit than with other balls. Nevertheless a greater chance at home runs and extra-base hits in general. Combine these effects, and you get more offensive production than with other baseballs.

@@YouGoPro Oh! Well yup! I asked him if you guys played together yesterday. He replied this morning and said for a couple seasons. Thanks for replying; you and Antonelli are both really great at replying to the community, I appreciate it.

Yeah, no shit the MLB laces are low. Hitters need to have a fighting chance. Can't believe I wasted my time with this.

MLB balls are done that way to give the batter the advantage and create higher scoring games. Not only does it handicap the pitcher from being to consistently throw good breaking balls, but also helps the ball travel farther and faster because of less resistance . Its all about gorilla ball now, which ruined the game in my opinion.

I think the laces are too tight on MLB balls now. There’s too many home runs being hit. I blame that idiot rob manfred. I don’t want to watch pro games with little league scores. I was reading an article about a week ago that talked about how many homers were being hit and it averaged to 2.3 bombs per game. That’s ridiculous. MLB has already taken away the top of the strike zone away from the pitcher. Let’s give some advantage back to the pitcher cause it certainly isn’t balanced.
