The year is 2050. Jomboy just uploaded his 10,000th breakdown about a botched MLB review call. Bases are now made of transparent and malleable plastic with LEDs inside that light up red when the built-in pressure sensors are touched. Uniforms and oven mitts have a similar technology where light is transmitted through the monofilament stitching when coming in contact with bases. 64k camera drones fly 10 feet above each base and provide 3D imaging and highspeed replays of every interaction between players and bases. MLB still relies on 60 year-old men to make hair-splitting calls, and replay reviewers don't use any of the technology afforded to them to overturn calls.

A new app called The Bosses is popular and is used to place bets on how many calls the umpires will miss. There's an Angel Hernandez scoring system built into the app which rates the umpires from A to Z based on how their career has gone.

It's like MLB is counting on everyone saying "If you're going to be that wrong why even have replay?" to which they'll respond "Ok. We're removing it." instead of actually fixing the issue.

If we still have arguments over plays that are reviewed, maybe just eliminate it, just let the umpires call it in real time.
@GSB_KD
@GSB_KD 7 дней назад
Agreed. Was the same in the NFL with challenging PI calls. They executed it terribly so they could turn around and say”well everyone argues about the call anyways so let’s leave it to the ref” when in reality it just needed some tweaks. But these calls by the ump are way worse cuz these aren’t subjective calls like a strike or a ball. You can see if a guys hand or foot hit the bag before he’s tagged it’s usually not that complicated

When Don Mattingly was manager of the Dodgers, there was a call that went against the Dodgers that he furiously argued with the umpires about, knowing full well the decision was made in New York. After the game, he was still angry, saying they needed to reform the system so that the umpires in New York decide on a call without knowing what the on-field call is. As opposed to giving that call the benefit of the doubt until they find “evidence” to overturn. I agree with Don Mattingly.
@rilian226
@rilian226 6 дней назад
Umpires union will never allow it as it would, in their eyes, undermine their members. MLB is forced to give the human umpire the benefit of any doubt. That said, I do agree w/ your idea. I think it would be a much more fair way to do reply.
@jdub36
@jdub36 6 дней назад
This is genius
@AureliusR
@AureliusR 4 дня назад
That defeats the entire purpose of it being a review. They have to know what the call on the field was because they go into the review with the assumption the umpires, who are assumed to have a better and more accurate view (whether or not that's actually the case) saw it better. When you have very close calls like this, where we're talking a number of frames where someone may or may not have been touching the base or the runner, etc, it's not enough *indisputable* evidence to overturn. It has to be very, very clear and obvious that the call on the field was wrong. If you play the devil's advocate and can even make a plausible argument that the runner could have been safe (ie, there is some ambiguity) then they have to go with the call on the field. That's how the review system is designed. If you don't like it that way, then fans need to start making their views known to the MLB. Start an organized campaign with refusal to buy tickets/watch games if you think it's THAT unfair. That will get their attention. Otherwise, read the rules and understand the intent and viewpoint of the video review personnel, so that reviews like this are not actually "botched" but rather just following the guidelines they have.
@jdub36
@jdub36 4 дня назад
@@AureliusR If the reviewers are unable to determine a call, they could just say the review was inconclusive and the call reverts to whatever was originally called. I agree with OP, letting the reviewers know ahead of time what the call on the field was introduces unnecessary bias to the reviewers.

There needs to be a rule where there is a difference between call on the field stands due to being proven correct by review, as opposed to call stands due to lack of evidence to overturn. People need to understand that the MLB approaches replay review like "innocent until proven guilty" in a court of law. It has to be absolutely certain, with not even a shred of gray area. So when you have instances where there is only one frame of video showing "maybe, kinda" proof there's space between foot and glove, but its still iffy if contact is actually being made at the same milisecond a foot comes off a bag, etc., they can't overturn. That's why its incumbent on umps to do as much as they can to get the call right on the field.

Yes, they are, and it's the reason everyone slides head first now. When replay first started, everyone was sliding feet first, and there was usually this brief little "hop" when they stood up which took them off the bag for a split second, and they would call them out upon review if they kept the tag on them during said hop.
