A good few of them are guys calling that they got it while their teammate ignores them and keeps going for the ball. When someone calls it, you stop making an attempt on the ball and it is on them now to catch it or not. Sometimes they may not call it loud enough too though, so it's not always their fault. Definitely cringey watching some of these and see a player right under the ball and here comes some outfielder running into make the catch for w.e reason.
So, most of these happened because the player messed up bad, then had to be great to make the play, or because multiple players converge and a routine play becomes tricky.
I noticed something... for every clip that had The Royals at bat and the other team got the circus catch,the next video was the team that caught the ball on the Royals had a ball caught on them. It happened three times, Great and awesome videos man, keep going its amazing!!!!

I'm surprised that the Dave Roberts catch didn't make it his second baseman bobbled the catch and knocked it up to Dave and he caught the ball was probably the best catch I have ever seen
In this video: players not saying "I've got it" to get their teammates to give them room. Alternatively, people not giving room to people who called for it.
I wish I could find the video, but does anyone remember the catch by Bill Hall after the ball popped out of Corey Koskie's glove? That's one of the most memorable plays by the Brewers in the 2000s. Koskie hit his head pretty hard on the ground and he suffered a pretty serious concussion. Unfortunately, because of that, he would never play again.
During softball one of our players was batting and she popped it straight up. The catcher was right under it and the pitcher came over and sat on the ground. The ball hit the catch's glove, missed it, and fell to the ground, right where the pitch had put her glove and caught it.
Sportscaster Lindsey Nelson coined the phrase "circus catch" because the plays we are watching could only be made in a circus. I would be curious what a Cirque du Soliel catch would look like.
no reason why there's miscommunication on a pop up directly above the mound. the pitcher took one step while calling it. he could've stayed on the rubber and still got it.
Not sure what people think "circus catch" means. It just means any very difficult or acrobatic catch. It doesn't have to involve bobbling the ball or tripping over someone.
one time I was playing right field and they hit a shallow right field ball and I ran up to it and I put my glove up to catch it but it bounced off my glove, knocked off my hat, richoched back down and fell right into my glove.

Well, if you're Kevin Mitchell, you do it because you took a bad route to the ball and had to adjust super fast. It was a great play caused by his not so great out fielding. And Kevin was always a ton of fun to watch, but us Giants fans knew it was his bat rather than his glove that'd earn him his salary. Lots of good fielders on the Giants in those days to help pick up the slack. In some lineups they'd have a gold glove at every position.
