I remember a quote from Mark Grace. He'd had a season where he hit a ton of doubles (probably after the 95 season, where he had 51). When asked why he thought he was getting so many doubles he said, "Well, my speed turns a lot of triples into doubles."

Kenny Lofton is vastly under appreciated. He didn't have the hr and rbi numbers but he was always on base for Thome, Belle, and those big hitters to drive him in. He also made the playoffs nearly every year. Like a pg who runs the entire game without the point totals.
@mrivard81
@mrivard81 Год назад
He was a leadoff hitter 🤣🤣🤣 of course he doesn't have huge power numbers... once upon a time, baseball guys knew fundamentally the job of the leadoff guy was to get on base, and then swipe 2nd base... it just shows how far baseball and its "fans" have gone into the toilet.
@codypritchard663
@codypritchard663 Год назад
@@mrivard81My thoughts exactly. Now it is swing for the fences or strike out 1 through 9. The averages are so low anymore, I know the shift has hurt some guys but if they had contact skills they could let it get deep and hit one the other way for an easy base hit. My favorite player of all time is the wizard Ozzie Smith.
@davieduckett

Thank you for including Jeff Conine. It shows how great you are at researching, I have never seen anyone include him on any list like this, as I thought only the small amount of us in South Florida who actually would go to the ballpark knew how treasured he was to us Marlins fans. Absolutely the greatest to ever put on a Florida Marlins uniform, it really is special to see fans of other teams noticed.

That surprises me that you think he's the best Marlin's player ever. Not because he wasn't good as he was a solid pro for years, but because of the talent the Marlin's has discovered and had via trades/free agency. I would also listen to local fans as they see the players the most.
@davieduckett
@davieduckett Год назад
@@DrtyALGreen Of course their were better players during their run as the Florida Marlins (I was not a fan of the switch to Miami Marlins) Gary Sheffield was my favorite player so I was beyond thrilled when they traded for him. Their were many players easy arguments can be made as better players than Conine, but because of terrible ownership it hurt seeing prospects developing into great players, then traded. Shortly after they won their second World Series I was at a spring training game and actually got to sit with owner Jeffrey Loria and thanked him for not fire selling the team like they did in 97. Then after letting him know how nice it could be to finally see players like Dontrelle Willis and of course Miguel Cabrera play out their careers as a Marlin, he signed a ball for me and promised their was no way Cabrera was going anywhere. A year later he traded them both, which broke my faith in supporting a favorite team. So even though Conine played a couple seasons somewhere else in between the 2 World Series wins, looking back growing up with that team Jeff Conine was the one consistent thing you could count on since day 1 and both World Series. I can't speak for everyone, but as far as the Florida Marlins go, in my opinion he is the Man.

The Conine story is insane given how many players are drafted cause they’re great hitters in high school or college and then go to the pros and can’t hit their weight. How did Conine as a college pitcher become an awesome hitter after being drafted as a mediocre starter. That really shouldn’t be possible to just all of a sudden be a great hitter like that. It was pretty much impossible to predict his career

Predating sabernetics, Grace was virtual gamer's dream: 5:3 career BB to SO ratio. Yes, he had great hand-eye coordination and bat control. Above all, his knowledge of the strike zone left him with few contemporaries (Tony Gwynn, Wade Boggs). He fielded 1st base with the best of his era.

Luis had almost 300 PA in 1997 and obviously got a ring... lost his roster spot when they traded for Craig Councell though. Edmonds might have to stay in the Hall of Very Good, but the Crime Dog should be in the Hall of Fame. It's not even close. This video names too many guys--Hershiser, Lofton, et al--as yet-to-be-elected HoFers. No. Most of them will not ever be inducted. Templeton got a bad rap. He was dazzling in St Louis, but there was a lot of animosity towards him. That field ruined his knees, so his spectacular career cooled there. But he was a good player and a great team guy. Templeton was a stick, and got to balls standing up that Smith had to dive for. Had his legs held up, he would have on in on the first ballot. Man, Boggs had to wait in Triple-A. The Sox had Carney Lansford at 3rd and were in no hurry to move up Boggs. Finally, faced with losing him, the Sox traded Lansford and the rest is history.
