0:05 Balk. 0:22 Theoretically legal, but intentional. Pitcher was ejected for being an ass. 0:40 Catcher's interference! 0:58 Surprisingly legal. No rules basis for obstruction. 1:16 Runner is out. No play attempted on the batter-runner, so not interference - but it's an obvious ejection. 1:34 Legal. 1:52 Live-ball obstruction. 2:10 Illegal pitch. 2:28 This one's probably legal, as his back foot never left the ground. 2:45 Legal, but silly. 3:03 Interference. 3:21 Legal. Batter was in his natural position in the box. 3:39 Only one fielder can be protected, so this depends on which fielder "counts". 3:57 Runner's lane interference. He was left of the lane. 4:15 Again, only one fielder can be protected, but because one of them had the ball, we know this is dead-ball obstruction. 4:33 Interference. 4:46 Dead-ball obstruction. However, the runner missed home plate; had Boston appealed, he would have been out. Obstructed runners still have to touch all the bases. 5:04 Dead-ball obstruction. Once again, only one fielder can be protected. 5:23 Batter-runner out for a triple play. The lack of a "grab" doesn't matter; R1 did not attempt to reach the base. 5:41 Backswing interference. 5:59 Interference. 6:17 Interference. 6:35 Legal. Runner was able to reach and stay on the base. 6:52 Given the evidence we have, this is live-ball obstruction; there is no proof of a play on the runner at or past the time of the obstruction. Even so, the runner is protected to 3B. 7:08 Interference by a retired runner. 7:27 Dead-ball obstruction. Yet again, only one fielder is protected, and the contact occurred before the out could be made. 7:45 I'd actually call this legal! In OBR, runner's lane interference is with the fielder catching the throw, and that didn't occur here because the throw was wild. 8:00 Interference. F4 was clearly attempting to throw the ball, so a play was being made on the batter-runner. 8:18 The runner wasn't even trying to make it look legal, so this is interference. 8:34 Interference. The play being interfered with is theoretically on the batter-runner, but it's R2 who's out. 8:46 Balk. 9:02 Runner's lane interference. 9:14 Interference by R1. 9:28 Runner's lane interference. 9:47 Legal at the time. Neither the runner nor the fielder touched second base; the runner is safe. (Of course, this is the play that prompted the rule change for these situations.) 10:05 Interference, though it ultimately wouldn't matter either way. 10:31 Dead-ball obstruction.

Hi! Youth umpire here, and here's my take on these plays: 0:06 Definitely a balk. No way around it. 0:23 No interference; the runner is in their lane. 0:40 Nope. Instant ejection in the league I work in. 1:00 Safe -- forced off the bag. 1:20 Why is this a question? The runner punched the guy, and depending on the situation I might award a double play here. 1:35 Balk. 100% -- only two legal positions (set & wind-up), you can't mix em 2:00 Contact is irrelevant here -- this is a judgment call on whether the guy would have made it. I call no interference based on where he's running. 2:20 & 2:30 Yeah, you can't do that. 2:45 As much as I like Cueto and the 2015 Royals, no way. He looked like he was delivering to home. I would call a balk, and ball four (as a balk with no runners on is an automatic ball) 3:10 Judgment call, and I agree 3:25 Legal, and the ball is live. 3:40 Judgment call, and I disagree: Obstruction is "the act of a fielder who, while not in possession of the ball and not in the act of fielding the ball, impedes the progress of any runner." That third baseman was not fielding the ball in my opinion. 4:00 Interference: BR is out and the ball is dead. 4:25 Definitely close, but I think he's out... not in the lane. 4:30 Interference, both are out. 4:50 Literally the poster-child of obstruction 5:10 Judgment call... on the one hand fielder got shoved, on the other the guy shouldn't have been standing there... safe at third. 5:35 Judgment call... interference 5:54 No interference: 6.03(a)(3) "If a batter strikes at a ball and misses and swings so hard he carries the bat all the way around and, in the umpire's judgment, unintentionally hits the catcher or the ball in back of him on the backswing, it shall be called a strike only (not interference)." 6:10 Interference; BR is out. 6:25 Interference; out. 6:45 Judgment call -- I think out. 7:00 Obstruction 7:15 What?? no obstruction, no interference, no nothing. Ball is live. 7:25 Obstruction, BR is safe 7:45, 8:07, 8:25, 9:05, 9:30, 9:51, 10:18 Interference, BR is out. 8:35 Yep, he's out. 8:47 10000% Balk 9:29 Meh. R1 is safe. 10:18 Toss-up, could go either way

0:23 Rob Dibble was one of the hottest tempered players in history. The call was never in question. Dibble intentionally threw at the runner. 1:20 Albert Belle--Possibly one of the few worse than Dibble. 1:35 I wish they would have shown it from the start. I umpired 15 years and I don't have an issue with it. But did he actually start from the set (balk) or windup (legal)? 2:00 and I call obstruction based on him having to go around the fielder. 2:20/2:30 I never understood why they ever let Carter Capps do that. The crow hop had never been seen in baseball before, but it has always been illegal in fastpitch softball. They let him do it for a year or two then made it illegal. 2:45 Agreed. Cueto stops mid-delivery with the intent to deceive. That is illegal. 3:40 I see obstruction as well, but interference is also possible if, by the angle, the third baseman was going after that ball. 4:00 Fryman is safe because he was on the base when the ball hit him. The running lane no longer applied. 4:15 Obstruction. One fielder got the ball, the other obstructed. Runner safe at first. 5:54 As you say, not interference. However, dead ball, runner back at first. 6:25 Not interference. For a batter to be called for interference there, he must be out of the batter's box or make a move to interfere with the catcher. 6.03(a)(3) 6:45 Legal. He's sliding into the bag. As long as he can reach the bag with a hand, they don't generally call that unless it's like the Utley slide (which should have been called, fined, ejected, etc.) 7:15 The issue in question is Reggie Jackson standing in the baseline between first and second and being hit by the throw even though he was out. I agree that it should be a live ball, but it could also be ruled that he stood there specifically to block the throw (which is something Jackson might do--he once intentionally swatted a ball thrown to first as a batter-runner). 9:19 Ball is dead as soon as the runner hits the fielder. Runner is out, batter is back at the plate. 9:29 Agreed--runner is safe because he had reached first by the time the ball hit him. 10:34 Blatant obstruction. The fielder collided with the runner without the ball. The fact the runner had already fallen over is irrelevant.
@MaydayAggro
@MaydayAggro 2 года назад
0:40 is just a foul ball. It could be argued that it is catcher's interference for stepping forward to catch the pitch. 1:20 is definitely a double play. 4:10 "There's nothing wrong with where Freyman is." What game are you watching? lol 4:25 has nothing to do with the runner's lane. It's just an out for running into the glove holding the ball.

@hbk314
@hbk314 3 года назад
When a player's momentum contributes towards his overrunning/oversliding a base, he's out. This was basically a hard tag where the runner didn't have the control to hold the base. I understand how this looks, but it was the correct call.
@TheAmazingallan
@TheAmazingallan 3 года назад
@@hbk314 yeah momentum can do that but when the fielder literally pulls the runner off the base there's nothing else to be said. That's how that works
@hbk314
@hbk314 3 года назад
@@TheAmazingallan No, it's not. If you overslide the base, you're out if you get tagged before you can get back on it. You have to be able to keep the base through a tag. He overran the base with some help from the defense by returning to first base out of control without sliding.

Literally look up interviews about the play and Hrbek never denies it, both the day of the game and to this day. The umpire has a defense but it is still wrong. Same thing with the Galarraga play. Staying in the batter's box doesn't protect a batter from being out for interfering with a fielder (catcher) trying to reach the batted ball; he has to vacate the box and allow the catcher to play the ball. It does protect him from being called out for being hit by his own batted ball - that becomes just a foul ball if he's still in the box - but a lot of people confuse the two situations.

He's not running into the batter at that point. A catcher and batter-runner entangling a la the 1975 World Series are both protected if both are doing what's expected of them, but to hit a pop up above the home plate area, turn into a spectator, and end up in the catcher's way? That's an easy interference call.

With interference, particularly the kind you're talking about, it's a judgement call. You can see the same play in different games with different umps and the call will be entirely different. At 9:04, that's clearly interference because the runner was on the grass. At 9:28 it may or may not have been. In the actual game they said it was because the runner drifts a bit and into the throwing path (really small drift, but it's there). In another, they may not because he was still on line and in the basepath. A common, though underhanded, trick you see a lot is for catchers to move behind the runner on a bunt or squib and throw at the runner's back. The ump sometimes calls interference and you get an out when you were otherwise beat, which happened a lot in this vid.

@@TheReaperEagle If you are running on the grass , you're right and there automatic out but, big but here, if you are running on the baseline, that's different and if they ball at you unpurpuse they should automatically thrown out of the game because that's unsportsmanlike conduct right there

@5:55 it's interference bc he steps out of the box towards the plate and hinders catchers throwing lane -- might not be bc of the bat -- announcers might be mistaken
@hbk314
@hbk314 3 года назад
@@dmdcreations You're correct based on the information given in the video. Backswing interference is a real thing, but when it's unintentional like this the only penalty is the runner has to go back. For them to have called an out as described in the video, it had to have been moving into the catcher's throwing lane.

They should eject any runner interfering with the fielding team. The most egregious are the second base slides intentionally interfering with the fielder trying to throw to first.

The one around the 4:00 mark with Fryman, he was at fault because he wasn't in the runner's lane. He put himself between the fielders on purpose. Same with the one after, he wasn't running where he was supposed to. You can't be running on the grass like that.

7:10 The 1977 (I think?) World Series clip, Yankees-Dodgers, when Russell knocked down a line drive and his throw hit Jackson, the Yankees did benefit but not by a call but by a non-call. The batter should have been called out and the play dead. In trying to manufacture a double play Russell still only got one out but allowed Munson to score from second.

Runners that intentionally try and trip the other player to prevent a throw should be ejected from the game for unsportstmanship and make him stand near where the warn up batters warms up for the other team wearing a dunce hat for the rest of the game! 😂
