Let's just take a moment to respect the incredible athleticism and toughness of catchers to hold on to balls after getting rocked....I only got hit like that once in 18u league
Awesome video. As a Red Sox fan I gotta respect Posada holding on to that ball. Amazing plays . MLB in the summer and NFL in the winter baby. Love my life
And catchers are normally big, plodding dudes. I hit 3 of them in my playing time. One was high school, two were single A. I was out 2 of those and only knocked one of them back. At 165lbs, I didn't have the momentum that the 240lb specimens who play in the majors have. I was an emergency catcher(I caught until high school when I was switched to short) and fortunately none of my games included a collision. I probably would have just stepped aside.
But it’s kinda no point.. well I guess it depends on arm length. If you have above average length arms like (74”), one could grab a ball and do a tag anywhere near home plate without covering it. At least how I am imagining it in my mind and myself playing the position. Because fucked getting rocked like literally all of these clips haha
@@codyferrell1896 Up until the Posey play, you were taught to block the plate to prevent the runner getting a hand in. Look at a lot of these plays, the catcher is literally sitting on home plate and there's nowhere to go but right through him, that was the best strategy to make absolutely damn sure that run wasn't scoring. With the new rule, they do essentially what you described. I remember I was taught to literally put my butt on top of the plate and brace myself, because if you can see the train on the tracks it's already too late to get off lol.
@@codyferrell1896 I think the other thing to consider is if you didn't really try to block the plate then the runner might see that and decide he can get under the tag with a feet first slide and if you can't get that glove low when you reach for the runner (and at that point it depends on your position and the angle he takes and all kinds of other variables, when/where the ball gets there etc), he probably gets his feet in. So you might avoid the pain but then your unwillingness to sacrifice the body could lead to giving up that run. Its quite a dangerous game you play at that point, literally and figuratively. But if you don't want to piss off your coach or any of your teammates its block the plate and hope for the best. Brutal, I know.
11:47 This is the best Home Plate Collision play imo. Top of the 9th, Reds' tying run charges, cannon throw home, Cameron Rupp catches the ball within milliseconds of getting clobbered, holds on to get the game-tying runner out, and the Phillies secure the win. Plus the fans' and commentator's reactions were spot on. It was all perfect in execution.
@@TheRingedPlanet yes it is. Was one of the best parts of baseball and that's coming from a catcher. I loved getting run over and hanging onto the ball for the out. I knew it was part of the game and and had no problem with it. Damn near 13-years catching and dozens of truck jobs. And it never should have been taken out
That was Brian Harper in Game 4 of the 1991 World Series. The funny thing is, he was actually a defensive liability as a catcher. He was only a catcher for the Twins, otherwise he was an outfielder. That hit was the best defensive play of his career as a catcher. Followed by diving back to the plate to tag out a runner on a wild pitch later in the same inning.
To be a catcher, you got to be the toughest player on the team. To see the effort of most of the catchers in this vid trying to hold on to the baseball for the team, it’s amazing.
Darknorth well yes but that doesn’t change the fact that a concussion protocal might of been “activated” but I think it was a joke about how the rules in NFL have made it softer.
That hit at 1:15 was the 1970 all star game. Pete rose fractured ray fosse’s shoulder. He never played in an all star game again and struggled with injuries for the next several years before retiring. Apparently his shoulder didn’t heal properly and caused him pain for the rest of his career.
Yep, and many criticized Rose for that hit, since it was an "exhibition game." Well, since it was an exhibition game, Fosse should have gotten the hell out of the way and he would have never gotten hurt. He knew how Rose plays. I had someone try a "Pete Rose" on me when playing softball, years ago. I was the catcher and saw this guy bearing down in my peripheral vision as I waited for the ball. He was dead meat by six feet, and I was able to brace myself and let him have it, leaning into him hard. We both went flying, but I am sure he got the raw end of the deal, since I was 6'5" and about 210lbs at the time. He was out by a mile. I was not hurt at all.
alan30189 he went over into the base path to catch the ball. Wtf you’re saying he should have just let him score and not tried to catch the ball? Also really??Softball???? I was a catcher for 16 years and i played actual baseball. And there’s no way in hell i ever pussed out at home plate. Especially in a softball game. Fucking loser.
Honestly I have no clue who the Phillies catcher Crats is but he’s one tough dude. He’s got a strong hold on the ball getting run over by big guys going full speed. Respect to all the catcher out there!
There's a big difference between running into the catcher because he's completely blocking the plate and you have no where to go to try and score and going out of your way to injure the catcher so you can go back to home plate after the catcher was taken out to be safe. Nyger Morgan would have been safe had he slid. Mark Teixeira would have been safe had he slid. Cousins would have been safe had he slid to the back of home plate. All of these instances and others shown in here, the runner had already decided that the only way they would be safe was if they deliberately tried to injure the catcher and go back to home plate after the collision. If the players were only colliding with the catcher when they had no where to go, the rule change would not have occurred. But the fact is that too many were deliberately trying to injure the catchers and the rule change had to happen. Go ahead and blame the "bleeding-hearts," "pussies," "liberals,"... and who ever else. The people responsible for this rule change were all the players who were deliberately trying to injure the catcher when a collision was completely unnecessary.
CocoJones397 i don’t think you see his point... “committing” doesn’t mean the runner must run into the catchers, just as the 1st commenter said- runners can still try their hardest to get to home base by sliding. but intentionally running into the catcher at these speeds to try and mess up their catch and to get base is not commitment, but unsportsmanlike and can lead to bad injuries.
also most if not all of them dropped their shoulder if your running into a catcher you must stay upright you can’t drop your shoulder and intentionally cause an injury
I am a trained umpire in Canada and at the level I normally conducted any contact as seen in the video would be an automatic out and an ejection. But baseball Canada rules might differ when it comes to close play/collision rules.
Honestly I love baseball, been a fan for 20 years, started watching when I was 5 and I'm proud to say thank god they took the collision away cause these players truly did get hurt and for what? One out? Good job MLB
Ricky Hoxha one out? It’s to prevent a run from scoring. Don’t be soft dude. The catcher was always supposed to be a thought guy who can’t hit well and drank too much. I bet you vote democrat
I was thought to always lower my shoulder into the catchers glove and hit like a battering ram to break the play at home plate. Anyone who has played baseball will tell you catchers always get the worse of this blows. I broke a kids nose in high school in a collision at home plate. I am glad the catchers are more protected now. When this collisions get ugly they can end a season for a player.
Mariners and Blue Jays, Toronto's Buck Martinez got run over by Phil Bradley (former Missouri QB) and broke his leg. Tried to get Gorman Thomas at third, threw wildly, but tagged Thomas out on the return throw. Amazing play and surely one of the most brutal collisions everywhere, with Martinez showing true toughness.
In Little League, (in my town) the rule was the catcher had to stand aside the base line, so the runner could score, and the catcher could not stand atop the plate. If the runner were to still truck them, or try to, they would be ejected and called out. Why not implement that?
New mlb rules do not outlaw blocking the plate as long as the catcher has possession of the ball, or is in the process of fielding the ball. In these cases, a base runner can still collide with the catcher if it is unavoidable. It is up to the umpires judgement. If a catcher has possession and still blocks the plate, the runner can still collide if it judged as unavoidable.
Took up recreational baseball six months ago and today played my first tournament as catcher. This is exactly what happened to me during the third match, but oh I fell in love with being a catcher!
I played softball-I caught for 11 years. Weighed a whopping 145 pounds soaking wet. Blocked that plate like a linebacker lol. Loved that part of the game when the bigger gals would be barreling at me full speed and I'd be waiting for 'em! But man, my knees are paying for it now lol.
Same story..I am a little beefier though Now that I am old, I play slow pitch. Co-ed. There is nothing better than a guy who thinks u are just gonna stand still and let them score. HELL NO. If that throw is coming in hot, I will tag your sorry ass out EVERY TIME.
Crash Dude Not stupid, they’re doing their jobs, as rules back then. Gotta do what they gotta do to prevent the runner from scoring, which they can’t from a foot off the plate. And runners doing what they gotta do to score. All those plays now would have been safe with the current rules.
I think if the catcher is blocking the plate once they get the ball, the runner should not be forced to slide into a tag, they should be allowed to try and go through the catcher. The Posey play is a collision play that has no place in baseball, the runner had the entire plate to slide into but chose to go after Posey. Can't blame anything on Posey.
Edgy Zombies he fucking turned into the runner that was completely his fault he knew he didn't have the ball and he still went he could've easily just dive out the way
I always laugh at the runners who stomp on Home after the collision acting all big and bad only for the Catcher to hold on and the douchebag runner to be out.
They aren't douchebags. They are fucking hyped on adrenaline after a fucking mini car crash. Those things don't just hurt the catcher. As a former running back I can tell you right now that these things have real deal consequences for everyone involved.
@@Brett-du5nh I'm not saying they all are. Not by any means. But some of these players I've seen do this sort of thing have been in other videos acting like real jerks and such. THOSE guys it us satisfying when they try to flex but end up being owned themselves
I played football all my childhood through senior year. I was also a catcher and let me tell you, no hit I recieved playing football hurts like getting plowed into at the plate. The gear does nothing to protect you and you're just stagnant, waiting for someone coming full speed. I know collisions are rare these days but kids, just in case, leave your mask on if there's a potential play at the plate.
how in the world can you not have the best one ever on here.. Buck Martinez getting his leg broken and still getting the out as well as tagging out a second runner
I thought it was like a MLB rule that players arent allowed to cover/crowd the Plate being it 1st, 2nd, 3rd or HOME plate. If it happens, Hitter is considered Safe.
That's a fairly new rule.. they barred catchers from blocking the plate shortly after the Buster Posey injury in this video. His leg was hurt pretty bad and he missed a bunch of time. After seeing one of the stars of the league go down on a play at the plate MLB took action.
It was a fucking accident what happened get over yourself. His cleat caught the ground unfortunately and thus his leg broke. There was nothing he could’ve done by that
zx6rdood lol, someone’s upset that this is baseball and not hockey, not everyone likes seeing people getting hurt this bad intentionally especially when it’s not needed. slide to the first base, or just stop. don’t need to tackle the catcher like a bitch...
As a kid, the catcher position stood out and was my favorite from day 1, it was the position that I wanted to play and my absolute favorite part about it was home plate collisions. There was nothing more adrenaline pumping, motivating and exciting to me than a home plate collision. When I played, my dream was to be in as many home plate collisions as possible, for me it was the ultimate challenge and motivation to be able receive a throw with a runner running down the base full speed and make the catch through the best and most violent hit that the runner had and still hold on to the ball and getting him out. It's sad that they banned them and I wish they were still part of the game.
Adam Khan At that time, home field advantage for the World Series alternated between NL an AL every other year. The All-Star game determining home field was a more recent development. Just wanted to share.
Someones probably mentioned it but missed a couple of Red Sox vs Yankees collisions in the 70's that started a few bench clearing brawls for the guy talking about the punch
Other fielders can't block the base line so why can the catcher? The rule should be you can't be in the baseline. What's the runner supposed to do? All he can do is plow into the guy.
Con Savage umm he is right, you can catch the ball and stay there stupid, and he can run down the 3rd baseline. Learn your baseball before arguing. Anyways I agree with you it's the catchers fault
Omfg, your guys' lack of knowledge of the game is ridiculous. The catcher is only allowed to block the baseline if he has the ball, or it is necessary to receive the ball. Please people, if you don't understand the rules, don't comment about the rules. It's simple.
Seeing these collisions remind me of the scene in 'Baseketball' where the outfielder gets tackled by a football player after catching the fly ball. Lol
The catcher is in the way of home plate and to move a 240lbs catcher you can’t just run up and tap him you have to hit that guy like you trying to move a semi truck
I don't know if any of you have stood next to Chipper but I have. He is a large man. He came to my highschool baseball team workouts a couple of times(Cartersville High). Kratz made one hell of a play to hang onto that ball and take that hit. I know his bell was rung hard and he felt that the next day.
Was the rule changed because of the Buster Posey injury or was it being discussed at the meetings for some time and MLB decided to make it official after he got hurt.
The rule was most likely changed because people had been abusing it in order to injure catchers. So many instances where dudes could have made it home by sliding or avoiding the rage and instead would try and take the catcher out. No better than intentionally hitting batters with a pitch.
Clearly cousins saw posey not catch the ball and still chose to ram him instead just slide in and touch the plate the play wasn't necessary! No posey is not at fault for the rule but his injury impacted mlb to make the rule in order to protect catchers more
@@kyleburgess780 The runners also don't have to lower their shoulder and go in like a linebacker. Many of these the runner don'r even try for the plate, they're aiming for the catcher to try to get him to drop the ball.
This is was so crazy that this was part of the game for so long. Just got 250 lb dudes getting a 87 foot runway to build up steam and crash into the catcher and see if he can hold on to the ball or not. A lot of times the catchers are on their knees too or are just receiving the ball so they are not able to fully see when the collision is coming. Thankfully plays at the plate are rare but when they happened it was like a sanctioned car crash for the catcher and for the runner it was crash into him as hard as you can and see if you can get him to drop the ball.
Probably an unpopular opinion, but seeing this compilation really made me realize that this play doesn't need to be legal for the game of baseball to be great. First of all, this play was a rare one. The average MLB baseball game didn't have a home plate collision. By making it illegal, you aren't getting rid of a huge part of the game. Secondly, look at how many of the players in this video got hurt. Injuries suck, and this play caused a bunch of them. I'd rather see a great game of baseball with both teams at 100% than have a great catcher gone for the season because of one cool looking play. These plays are fun to watch, but they were rare and it wasn't so fun that it was worth losing players for the season. Baseball has not only survived, but flourished without the rule and it will continue to do so. Remember Chris Coghlan's dive over Yadier Molina? That play would have never happened if this rule still was in place. The game changes, but it's still the same game at the core. This play hasn't and won't ruin baseball.
If buster posey holds onto the throw he’d get clocked the way posada did when Hinske barreled into him. And we’d still probably have collisions today. Catchers that hold on are beasts. Back when catching was the key position in the diamond
