Mark Appel still got to do what almost every boy who plays baseball has dreamed of. Play in front of a 40,000 sold out crowd for at least a minute. You are the center of attention for a few minutes as you finally get to play in a major league baseball game. Sure his career didn't last long, but he got to live it for every second it lasted. he got his first ever mlb strikeout as well so thats an accomplishment in its own right.

No idea why he would say that Appel was the biggest bust ever, given the 3 picks that never made the bigs....and I lived thru it, the hype around Appel was weak compared to that around Brien Taylor, that would be my pick for biggest bust of the 1st overall's(although I don't remember when Chilcott was drafted, so can't compare)

I’m glad that Mark Appel didn’t sign with the Pirates and he was a bust for another team lol. I was mad about that at the time but then when I thought about it, I said what God doesn’t want to be in the major leagues immediately if he’s really that good answer that should’ve been the first red flag and then I wondered about the Pirates process for even drafting him.

I loved Frasiers bat and bat speed as a Yankees fan. The problem is anytime he heated up he got hurt and then when he came back he either got hurt again or just couldn't catch fly balls. It was ALWAYS something with him, and then all of his nonsense off the field where he couldn't shut the fuck up to the media. He did have and still does have a ton of talent but I'm certain the time has passed for him. His bat speed was insane. He could catch up to fastballs up in the zone when most guys would be late at that point. Sad story all around.

I don't think Bickford should count as a near-bust, he got picked out of HS, he had some time in the bigs, and is still playing, that's more then you can say for the vast majority of picks, bad overall draft or not.
@AndThatsBaseball

Oh yeah, he’s definitely got plenty of time left in the league, especially compared to most of these guys. Considering how beloved he is in the clubhouse, he could be a guy that sticks around forever.

Austin brother Parker is also currently one of the Tigers top prospects and as long as Austin doesn't get traded cut or leaves he should be able to play with his brother in 2024

I find it very ironic and coincedental that in three top major sports leagues in the US (NBA, MLB, NFL) 2013 was amongst the worst drafts for all three. Very odd year indeed

Baseball is the most difficult game to evaluate player ability. By far. You can only hope that a highly recommended player pans out. Either there are too many variables or the system used to evaluate players is inadequate. Either way, being drafted number one, especially as a position player, doesn’t come even close to being a lock for success.

I personally do not think of players who do not become stars due to injuries as “busts.” For me a bust is someone taken in the first with a can’t miss designation who does not develop Into a regular MLB player. I do not believe you can reliably expect anyone to be a multi season star because to much can happen. But Even this isn’t as it used to be because small market teams take bigger chances to save bonus money.

Holy shit, as a Rockies fan, I fell out of my bed when I saw the absolute mountain that was Jon Gray in this class. Yeah, he was decent, but that’s about the most you can expect of a Rockies pitcher over the past decade. Still, good to see he was a bright spot here, even if the Rockies, unsurprisingly, got rid of him as soon as he looked like a potential stud.

I always felt bad for Clint Frazier on the Yanks it felt like they were in this weird limbo of we dont didnt wanna trade him because he has future star potential but we literally dont have a place to play him....wasted at least 4yrs of his career😂
