MLK (Full song from Vocal Spectrum III)

The first time I heard this song on Vocal Spectrum's CD I knew I had to do it. Took me a little while to figure out how to make the sustained chord at the beginning but I eventually got it and it turned out pretty smooth. Also messed around with the reverb on this one as well and I am very happy with how that turned out too. All in all I consider this one a success.

I had two breathes in each part recorded. I loaded each part into melodyne, then shifted time forward about 6-7 seconds and loaded it again. Then muted out the breathes and covered it with the parts of the shifted audio. Took forever to make it sound smooth and like one solid note.

This shatters the mystery for me! I was blown away by that post, and was BEWILDERED by it's length. You've pulled back the curtain! It's still amazing talent, well done! We sang this version in our chorus in '18. Such an emotional song for me.

The reverb only adds depth to the sound...too much would have ruined it, not enough would have sounded like you were singing outside in a field. The level you had was PERFECT! I thoroughly loved the overtone from 2:10 to 2:12...Simply amazing. I realize that this is 5+ years old, but had to leave my words of praise for such an amazing job.

Another flawless & smooth performance, well done! This song is beautiful and you did it justice. PS: I think I know what it is about your sound that I was trying to describe. You apply reverb with a positive dB, so that your voice sounds like it's coming out of a speaker in a big room. I would be curious to hear you with a more mild reverb, like -6dB.

@seibs14 I can understand that (the patience lacking). Personally I only care for the audio, but the video does give it a nice presentation, and you can sort of follow the voices along. Good job!

@trudbol I don't see anywhere in my reverb settings where I can change something like that. So I'm either dumb or just don't have that capability. I need to get an uptune out though for variety's sake and that will have a much less defined reverb as to not sound muddy.

@seibs14 LOL I doubt you're dumb if you can pull off multitracks like this. :) In Melodyne, when you activate the build-in reverb and open the mixer panel, you'll see a checkbox named "Ax" with a knob next to it, it's all right above the main volume control for each track. It sets the volume gain of the echo relative to the actual recording (I think). I typically set it to -5dB. Anything above 0dB sounds "muddy" as you put it and everything sort of blends in. Hope this helps.

@frankvdg haha fair enough. I lack the patience required to spend hours making it perfectly synced up. Also I am actually singing in the video. Just no sound from it. Not sure if you knew that or not but wanted to clarify just in case.

@Shooter1444 bass is like 3 inches or so lead and bari are probably about 5-6 and tenor is like 7-8. Give or take.

Incredible! To everyone who wants sheet music, I arranged this piece for barbershop. I would, however, recommend just learning it by ear as it's a bit odd on the page (there's no real time signature in this song, so my notation is the closest fit I could find to what they sing). I'm sitting here trying to think which part you are best at, and I've come to the conclusion that the part you're best at is, "all of them". It's impressive when you have the privilege of listening to a foursome like V.S., but when you know this was put together by one human being, "WOW!!!!", is all I can say!!

I've listened to it a few times and it sounds like he doesn't. Even if he doesn't, it's still one massive arrangement/recording. If you're into LOW bass notes on this song, there's a wonder SATB arrangement by Bob Chilcot performed by The Concordia Choir...here's the link: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-u15YG2HODOI.html I guarantee you're eye teeth will be rattling when you hear the very last note, and being an old "BHS" singer, he's not dumping the note...yes, it's raspy, but I think it's an octave below the low C you're asking about in this arrangement.

Well ya see in this version, the low C you're talking about would actually be a D, which is a bit easier to pull off. Regardless, he didn't drop that low. But Paul is right, the Concordia version is RIDICULOUS.
