Is that an S&S engine with an S&S carb or a Harley engine with S&S carb which is on my 91 Sporty1200. heard some Harley carbs are way to finicky. I never had an issue with S&S . . . Is it true Harley did NOT need a battery when the bike had a generator? but did require a regulator? I do appreciate your answer.
Does need a bat and regulator with a Kettering "coil and points" iggy. You need battery power to energize the coil. Magneto iggy us basically a tiny generator/coil/ points setup in that mag head, so no battery needed. If you want to run lights, you still need the generator and a regulator (regulator keeps voltage low enough to not fry the bulbs). The regulator has to be points type (not a solid state/electronic type) if you eliminate the battery. If you want lights when the engine isn't running, you still need a battery, though it can be lower capacity than you'd need running a Kettering iggy.
