Magnetos are a great piece of engineering, aircraft have used them since the beginning and a proper mag will work beautifully on your Shovel. Well Done.
Great job, I have always wanted install a Morris mag on either my shovelhead or 1985 evo softail. Now seeing this video, I am sold, ordering mine today. Rid safe my friend.
Sounds great, I did this on my S&S 96 Evo. Got a great deal on a Morris a few years ago for around $1000. Also did the clear top cover, the only way to go. Only problem I have is touching the side of it with my leg sometimes, with forward controls. Gets hot on hot days.
Right on! S&S 96 is a motor I'm considering for a future project. Plenty of power without being all "Drag Bike Nasty." I'm thinking of building an FXR bagger with one for Highway touring.
The first thing you should have done was loosen the pushrods to take pressure off the cam chest before removing or adding new cover. Then take the lifter blocks out to so you can check breather and cam gear clearance to your new cover with new gasket. Maybe you got lucky?
I definitely got luck. And... I followed the instructions. And I talked with the folks at Morris on the phone. I planned on taking the rods out, but the thing looked so pretty... I got excited, and put it in place. And it slid right in. I mean, you saw it! I wasn't planning on it going together like that.
Really enjoyed clip. I have 1972 FLH only thing not stock is ape hangers. I wont be without them. Next thing is 5 speed transmission. Then maybe electronic ignition. Dont know about magneto had bike since i was 25 now in dark side of 50,s. Saving for newer bike now. Shovels in dining room. Its not going anywhere had too long. After newer bike im thinking either 2010 something. Or if cant get cheap enough. Take 10 grand put on brand new. But i really dont want that. I still want pan an knuckles. But age won't . let me i fear. Good thing you dont live near me. Im in condo. You seem smart an nice guy. I,d be over all the time,. LMAO. Good luck friend. Have great life peace
Headliner adhesive holds it on for you then you don’t half to hold two thing at one time if you use it spray on gasket away from bike it will be sticky enough to hold. Just what I do I have arthritis real bad fingers are crooked helps me a little. Cool video man. Cool ride
Ahh I see now lol. Looks simple enough. Def want to run a mag on my '84 but I think i'm gonna spend the time and money on adding a kicker to the rotary top trans; i'm going to need different pipes first. Oh the agony. Again, solid fking work my man!
Really enjoyed your video, that magneto is a beautiful piece. I had an 85 evo ST, last year for chain drive with a kicker. Always wanted to install a magneto on it but ended up selling it. Have had two or three bikes since but parting with that one is my biggest regret. Don't ever sell your shovel.
Right on. That shovel is literally in my will. It's not for sale. You can easily put a mag on pretty much any evo or older bike. Grab a cheap Evo and build something cool!
The only problem, you don't know your clearances for the cam shaft or the pinion shaft? If it's not tight enough it can make noise, throw off your timing, it's too tight, you can destroy any number of parts including that new cam cover.
You are correct. I was fairly confident that it wouldn't be too tight on the cam shaft because of the way it was behaving with the old cone on. I have ridden this bike for a loooooot of miles. It's had top end parts in it for a long time. If anything in it isn't working, I assume it's probably worn down, or loose. btw, I've been riding it hard for a year and half since this video, and it's still great.
Nice job but I have two suggestions. First off you should at least remove the pushrods when you pull that cam cover off. The reason is there is a lot of tension on some of those lifters because of the valve springs on any valves that happen to be open. You'll notice it's a little tougher to put the cover back on. The other reason is because you should pull the lifters out so you can reach in and check your camshaft and play. You need to check that and play anytime you fit a new gasket on the cam cover on the cam cover. The gaskets can vary quite a bit in thickness
I would love one of these on my 84 ironhead but dang they are pricey. I have that same style magneto on a walk behind gravely tractor and it can sit for ten years you Crack open the magneto and clean the contacts and you have spark!
They are definitely pricey! This is a "forever bike" for me, so I don't mind spending money on top level kit. I'll ride this until I stop breathing. So, If I get 30 or more years use out of a thing, I don't mind paying a premium to get precisely what I want. The other side of it for me is that if I Don't buy the super nice thing, I have to live with "Almost right" for the rest of my life. And that sucks.
@@shrop oh I forgot two things: I LOVE the bareknuckle velocity stack. His glass ones are sick and I hope to pick one up one day. I hope you have a kid man cause that bike should be a legacy bike. I hope that thing is on the road 50 years from now (probably running bootleg gas by then if any can be had at all). Peace man.
Great video. Just curious do you need to be at TDC when you pull & swap the cone and then insert mag? I'm gonna shutup now and finish the last 7 minutes of the video. Looking good so far man!
Best way to get that old gasket material off on these engines is to use a razor blade held a a 90 degree angle to the surface. Done correctly it will remove all the old material and not cut into the metal.
I usually end up using a regular razor blade. I start with the plastic. That gets about 20 percent of the job done. Then I try a bunch of other stuff that doesn't work. Then I end up with a razor blade. There's a video of me rebuilding this motor and trying everything. Soda blasting. Wire wheel on a drill. Unicorn Hoof Clippings. I finally ended up getting some dental cleaning tools.
Great looking bike! Can I ask what lubricates that worm drive in the cone? I’ve had a ‘93 evo but nothing ever went wrong in there to make me wonder before.
I've got a Mag on my Panhead and honestly wouldn't run anything else. New bikes need a key fob just to turn on and my bike doesn't even need a battery 😄
When this video was shot, I had an S&S Super E Shorty on the shovel. Prior to the magneto, it was two or three throttle blips to squirt from the accelerator pump, then find the compression stroke where the pedal feels firm high up. Then kick it hard, once, and blip the throttle. No choke. Might have to kick it twice if it was really cold outside, or if it hadn't run in over a week. With the mag, it usually starts on the first kick. Definitely starts on the second. Then I changed to a Lectron carb. It's a little more finicky now. I have to use the choke/enrichiner for the first start of the day. I think my current tune starts a little harder, and runs a lot better. I think I've got a few more degrees of timing in it now. It's a freight train with the Morris magneto and the Lectron. Whole different motorcycle. My S&S setup was great. I rode this thing all over. The new carb is performance oriented and it seriously wakes the machine up.
I have the whole charging system and electric start. You can see the button below the oil bag. I had a full harness, then deleted the coil, and the wires that run into the cone. Regulator Rectifier is still there, sending power to the battery. Lights are super simple. Hot wire from battery positive, through a fuse, through a switch, to the headlight. High Beam/Low Beam switch is on the light itself. Grounded locally to the triple tree. Tail light splits after the fuse and "lights" switch. Second split goes to a pressure switch and turns on the brake light, which only works for the rear brake.
Dude! It looks like you scratched the surface a little bit. I wouldn't have used that steel wool. Harbor freight has hard plastic scrapers for that. You'll be scraping all damn day but they won't mar your surface.
