The public lands surrounding Moab have some of the darkest skies remaining in the contiguous 48 United States. As few as one in ten Americans live in an area where they can see the estimated 2,500 stars that should be visible under normal conditions. Every visit to Moab should include some time under the stars.

How I would love to live in utah. Such a beautiful state. I love astronomy and seeing God's beautiful universe. It's beautiful. Here in Ohio I have never seen the milky way.

Some of my favorite astrophotos were captured in Arches. Before light painting was banned, it was hard to get a good Milky Way image at Balanced Rock. With long exposures, it was hard to photograph the night sky there if the exposure time was more than a few seconds because on a typical moonless and clear summer night, there would be 30-50 photographers trying to light paint the rocky features. Now with light painting eliminated, only vehicles light up the rocks. Blue hour photos of the foreground can be blended with the starry sky... awesome!

Red lights at night don't hurt your night vision much, but they ruin the foregrounds in nightscapes (landscape images at night)... so I recommend using red lights as little as possible when photographers nearby are capturing nightscapes... but stay safe and use red lights when necessary. It is easier to recapture a night image than heal from a fall at night.

I love shooting the Milky Way in Moab and Canyonlands. Always two favorite places to visit at night.

The good thing about it is light pollution can be solved instantly with the flip of a switch.

@@tonygareth221 The best time is from April to October on clear nights with no moonlight. The moon washes out much of the Milky Way. You can find moonless nights 3 or 4 nights before the new moon until 3 or 4 nights after the new moon. A few passing clouds can actually make the Milky Way images better because they add a bit of uniqueness to your photos (as long as they don't block the galactic core.

What's MOAB stand for?
@MarkRickert
@MarkRickert 2 года назад
It's not an acronym, it's the name of a tribe of ancient people mentioned in the bible: the Moabites. See Genesis 19:30-38.
