I would like to amend my statement after dozens of hours of research. I have no found where 90% of filters sold in the United States are made by. Turns out Champion labs makes the Fram Endurance, Amsoil EAO and Royal Purple EP filters and they are identical in every way besides the outside labeling. Mobil1 filters are also made there but are not as robust because of their redesign. Mann+Hummel makes brands like WIX, Purolator, Motorcraft and several others. I have a link I can share. Mobil1 filters are great filters but with their redesign of the filter and reformulation of their Extended Performance oil, the new oil is not as robust as it once was. Pennzoil Ultra Platinum and Valvoline Extended Performance and EP High Mileage are the top three besides Amsoil Signature Series being about the same as the Pennzoil Ultra Platinum in laboratory settings. But if you do manufacturer recommended, oil light-based oil changes or severe service oil procedures which is 5000 miles, then any filter with a Synthetic media will work just fine, especially Champion labs made models. What I found is that each brand of OEM filters can great vary in quality and build and filtration, so aftermarket is generally the best choice. I still do not recommend extended oil changes, no matter what oil and filter you run, the science proves it is not worth the risk or damage versus cost of an oil change. Hybrids are usually 10,000 miles; many cars are 7500 these days. The Jeep Grand Cherokee models are based on an algorithm based on the driving style, time and level of service when it decides you need to change your oil. My apologizes for the long update but wanted to share what I had found in my research. It still blows me away that Amsoil EAO and RP filters are literally identical to the brand-new model Fram "Endurance" (FE model) filters, which I have cut open myself and compared as of writing this. They are only available at Walmart and even the number codes on the side were the same. I have several links to share, if anyone is interested. I am currently in the process of sending in virgin samples of oils and then sending in the 5000-mile oil change for analysis. I am going to do the top 10 or so, so it is going to be a while before my comparison is complete. But I am also testing and sending analysis of five different vehicles.

Aside from a few extra pleats, I don't see anything obvious that would allow the 20,000 mile filter to run twice as long as the older version. Either there is a significant difference in the filter media, or the bypass valve rated PSI, or it's mostly smoke & mirrors and we're wasting our money spending extra money on a 20K filter. Let us not forget the old days when it was standard practice to replace the oil filter at every other oil change. There must have been some logic to that. Or perhaps the newer recommendation to change the filter at every oil change is just clever marketing from the oil filter manufactures, and that is why there is no big differences between these two filters (in the review above). To me it would seem like the useful life of the oil filter is going to be directly proportional to how much junk it filters out of your engine, and that has as much to do with engine condition as the change interval. Once the filter fills up with dirt, it's going into bypass mode, and is useless and doesn't filter the oil. As a driver, you have NO idea of how often, or how long, the bypass valve is activated. I've seen thousands of used paper cartridge filters (no outside can), and I can tell you that it is extremely rare to see one that is obviously plugged up so badly that it is likely to activate the bypass valve. My best guess is that most oil filters are disposed of long before the end of their useful life, and that's exactly what the oil filter manufactures want. And, from a consumer standpoint, you want to replace your filter before it gets clogged up, but not more often than necessary. One other possible explanation for an oil filter to last longer, is if the bypass valve of the 20K filters opens at a higher pressure than the valve of a 10K filter. This is just conjecture on my part, but think about it. If an oil filter requires a higher pressure before the bypass valve starts working, then it is forcing more dirt into the filter, possibly making it last longer. Look at it another way. If the bypass valve is opening up during normal operation, the filter is too clogged up, and no longer useful. But, if the bypass valve opens up at a higher pressure, and the engine can supply the higher pressure, it's going to force more oil into the filter media, thereby extending the life of the filter. Increasing the bypass valve pressure would be tricky business though, and I would expect the engine manufactures to not like that. The higher the pressure level, the longer it will take the filter to go into bypass mode, and potentially starve the engine of oil for short periods of time - not good for the engine. The way I see it, if these 20K mile oil filter really had better filtration technology inside, they would be the first one to describe it on the outside of the box, or at least on their websites. They purposely keep the details vague for a reason, and I doubt if it has much to do with the competitors learning their secrets. On the contrary, if there is a secret being held by these oil filter manufactures, it may be that their filters typically last a whole lot longer than what is advertised on their packaging, and there isn't much difference between a 10K filter and a 20K filter, as your comparison video clearly shows. I'm also going to stick my neck out, and suggest that an oil filter that is starting to fill up with dirt is going to filter finer particles better than a fresh oil filter. Just like a furnace air filter. But, at some point it will slow the flow of oil too much, as it starts to clog up, and needs to be changed before the bypass valve kicks in. In other words, I suspect that dirty oil filters filter out more dirt than do clean filters. But when is the optimal time to change your oil filter? You can't really tell, because there is no good way to tell if it is plugged up. From a pure engine longevity standpoint, I really don't see how you can beat changing a cheap cellulose filter every 3,000 miles. They trap smaller particles than the more expensive synthetic oil filter do, which is why they have to be changed more frequently. Nobody wants to change their oil and filter every 3,000 miles, but what could better for your engine? That's what I do.

It had more available filter material because the end caps didn't cover so much of it on the sides. It shows in how much taller it was when you cut it out. The 102 appeared 2inches shorter length also, and it wasn't as tall x 52" is a lot of filter area. I bet that is how they can say it can handle 20,000 miles.
