yeah i agree i started last year room by room my problem is that i removed the ceiling trim and found gaps where the wall and ceiling didnt meet but god bless caulk lol.

Perfect video! How did RU-vid know I was thinking about this in the shower yesterday? I bought my 2100 sq ft triple wide for cheap 10 years ago. Paid cash. Upgraded flooring and appliances first. Doing a metal roof next and should last for the rest of my life.
When I'm done with mine (it's a second home on 31 acres) you will never know it was a mobile home except for the trailer hitch. I'm leaving that for the tax assessor. All totally gutted and redone right on the inside. The outside will have the metal exterior ripped out, sheathing and then log cabin siding. Every window has been replaced with Pella house windows. With the forest green metal roof and structure the former owner put on it it's going to look AMAZING. I don't mess around. I've learned a LOT in the process, my friends are amazed not only with the results but with my abilities. I'm a software engineer and nobody ever taught me a damn thing about construction. If I can do it literally anyone can. Do your homework and watch RU-vid videos.
I went ahead and put all new drywall in my manufactured home. The reason is because I wanted smooth walls….no texture. I think even a pro would have difficulty achieving smooth walls. Reasons are numerous….older manufactured homes are often sitting up on blocks on the dirt. They will shift and move over time especially if you live in a rainy/damp/humid environment. Floors get out of level which causes walls to be out of plumb. Studs are never crowned when they frame these so you see waves in the longer walls such as hallways. Over time the floors arch over the I-beams. I will say this though….if you know how to correct these issues and put in some work, manufactured homes can be a very affordable alternative. I purchased mine which is 20 years old for $11,500. I put about $15,000 in and plenty of sweat labor, but it will market for $50-60k in my area. Plus they are great for “practicing” on because of the lower value and cost to improve.
I have drywalled many maufactured homes. Here are a few hints from my experiences. Corners ceiling to wall joints and wall to wall joints If the vinyl wall corner joints are tight I prefer to caulk the corners with good painters caulk. Quick and smooth. If the corners gaps are large then paper tape them. If the wall to ceiling joints are large. I have flat taped the wall gap with hot mud and paper tape. only on the wall not onto into the popcorn ceiling, let it dry then caulked the corners tight into the popcorn or heavy texture. On flat joints Test your mud you are using for good adhesive action. After “setting” in all nails, staples, and screws. I prefer to paint walls with kills or a good primer then start your mudding. I have not had any adhesion problems then. On texturing I prefer to orange peal texture eather heavy or lighter. if you try to knock down on these walls the unlevel walls will give inconsistent look. If you are wanting a more knock down look then loosen up the texture mud so it hits and flattens more.
I agree with the painter's caulk. I did this after doing traditional that cracked after a year of shifting. We have beach sand type soil. On the regular seams used painters caulk to fill, then 1 coat of traditional mud. No cracking so far after 3 years. ***edit*** where I didn't replace the drywall I sanded the vinyl seam. Where I replaced the drywall I flipped the drywall over to the paper side when putting it up.
As long as the primer you use specifically says it can be used on vinyl then you will be fine. And like you said, prime before you mud. This is extremely important!
I've got some fairly wide gaps between the wall boards under the strips. 1/8 - 1/4 inches in some places. What would you recommend? What type of tape? I'm a newbie with mobile home walls so I'd like to go with the all purpose mud for the seams. I'm putting crown molding up to deal with the wall/ceiling gaps. Thank you for your help here!!

Thanks so much for your comment. I was thinking it would be best to prime (or kilt) the wall first then mud, and you confirmed my thoughts. We got a professional to do the main living areas of our house for about $300. They did a good job and still looks good 10 years later. Right now we are having a mold issue in the walls of our bedroom-we believe it's condensation because we have a portable AC to keep room 59° at night (we like sleeping in Antarctica) and with it being 90°+ outside that's a big difference. So we are going to have to remove all the factory drywall and replace. I think adding insulation should help prevent that in the future. Is that what you think we should do or something else? It's a 2005 Norris single wide. We just found out that there is no osb on the outer walls, that's sorta crazy. It's just the drywall, insulation between 2X4s a green board- looks like dense foam or something- not sure if it's for insulation or a moisture barrier, then the siding.

I thought I was the only one whose Manufactured Home was held together with a million staples per square inch. I stare at those dang wooden strips every day and hate them. And where there are none, it looks like somebody tried (and failed) to cover the seams with tape and mud, and now they're all cracked. Your advice makes so much sense to a novice like me. This is PERFECT. I live in a manufactured home with taped & textured walls; love it! However, my last manufactured home had the strips, and I hated them. I'm planning on moving after I retire, and if I find a manufactured home, that is in the right location, with the right amount of room at the right price--but it has the strips on the walls--now I know how I can get rid of them. Thanks for the help!!! My husband and I just bought a modular, he is pretty handy (electrician is his day job! But he can do most things needed around the house!) however he is used to regular drywall, never had to worry about the seams.. and this was a huge help!! Also helps to paint the walls whatever color we want! And not worry about those seams every few feet or so! It’ll be a project but one that we have more “know how” about now. I saved the video so I imagine we will be watching it a few more times! He said “save that!! That’s exactly what I need!” Thanks again!
I did my double wide however the drywall was glued to the studs with an average 1/2” gap between the panels , the rock was covered with a vinyl type wrap , something I did was put a urethane sealant joint in the gap and apply primer to the walls before tape & mud , I did my walk texture by hand with a stipple brush and broad knife , the sealant joint will prevent future cracking in your tape joint , the finished product looks high end good , manufactured homes are really built cheap so if you scrape and slick your ceilings and replace the trim with wood and upgrade most everything you can really have something nice , by the way I rode out hurricane Ivan in my manufactured home one mile from the Gulf of Mexico in Perdido Key and came out better than most folks
I have tried mudding my joints twice so far, and even though there was plenty of mud underneath, and parts of the tape adhered to the wall, huge portions of the edge peeled back from the wall with the mud stuck underneath it. My VOG panels are textured, but I'm guessing now that they are too smooth to adhere correctly. I have some super bonding primer I was considering laying over the joints before I try it again. Did it help you to do that? (i realize this is an old comment, but I'm hopeful. I can't find anything to help me.)
I just did an entire mobile home. I used light weight with paper tape and it worked great. Did hawk and trowel texture with knock down. It looks great. Just make sure to use sealer before paint. Zinzer 123 is good.
My experience with mud on vinyl is you have to sand the sheen off of the vinyl before mudding. Also, you should be using PVA primer (poly vinyl acetate primer) to seal and harden mud (1st husband was a union painter). Using regular primer will soak into the mud, causing it to eventually flake off of the wall.
I’ve found the hot mud is harder to prime and paint, it always has bleed thru ..I always can see the mud lines with a dark paint ,I’ll try the PVA primer ,I was only patching pre-painted drywall though

Great knowledge. Thanks for sharing as I was a maintenance technician for a manufactured home community. The strip is called “BATTON STRIP”. Yes if you lose one due to whatever the reason you can pull one from the closet and put it in place of the missing one. Matching or painting generally requires painting that wall as most times it won’t match the existing ones. I personally like the smooth walls it makes the walls look like a site built home. I enjoy your videos as they are loaded with knowledge and advice. Hope your doing well as I know you retired. Best to you…
@@JodiRaeRandaCastleRockRealtor Used a wallpaper scorer to get it to lift. Most of the time the vinyl will peel off in large sheets. Then used Sheetrock sealer and allowed to dry. Use a electric palm sander to knock down the fuzz. Afterwards, I applied a knockdown finish after mudding my joints. If I had to do it over, I would use an Acrylic paint instead of Latex.

I helped my buddy do this to a manufactured home a few years back. We skim- coated the whole place because of imperfections in the original finish. We then applied a knock-down finish. After primer and paint, it came out beautiful. Thanks for the tips

Best option, and really the only way to do this, is rip it all out, then replace the improperly installed R7 insulation they put in these, with R15 RockWool, hang 1/2 drywall, And then watch That Kilted Guys taping, mudding, and finishing videos.
@@Cam-wi3tp Thats why He does these videos, You do it Yourself, and it doesn't cost thousands of dollars. You can buy 30 sheets of 1/2"sheetrock for under 300 bucks. If your wanting to save money on energy, do insulation, you can cut energy costs in half, I did it.
I guess you have never tried to remove all of the glued on sheets of drywall. GOOD LUCK. After that all the door jams do not fit. The trim is a mess. I have always done as the man said and saved the customers money.
Not really. Tight money is the reason they are in a mobile home. The walls are paintable, I just replace the wall battens with strips, caulk, then paint same as crown. Gorgeous.
Wow! I did this myself about 2.5 years ago to a single wide I was converting to a sewing room. I am preparing to do the same thing to my doublewide as most of these pieces are breaking or falling off anyway. The only thing I didn’t know to do was re-screw the panel down if it moves. I feel so smart. Thanks
I have done a couple of rooms with the vinyl coated sheetrock. One thing I have done is cover the entire wall with a very thin coat of General Purpose premixed mud to make the vinyl smooth. I finish coat with ""Paint + Primer" all in one. Takes a couple of coats to cover darker vinyl but I have not had a problem with paint peeling or flaking off.

You certainly are a man who knows what he's doing. I wish I'd have found you 10 years ago. I refinished all of my walls and they turned out nice but could have been better. If you look closely you can see the texture difference when the lighting is right. Thanks for the great advice! I hope to never do this again. LOL

How about coming to Mississippi and helping an older widow rehab a zone 3 mobile home? The mud works exactly like it does on plain sheet rock. Paint is usually 1 coat of quality paint. I prefer to use the fiberglass tape and premixed mud. It holds better if you need to relevel or move the unit.
if you're worried about mud not sticking to the vinyl, then you could roll primer on it. it's basically glue paint, with anti-mold properties. it should adhere to vinyl AND leave a surface for drywall mud... AND prep the wall for paint.

I've seen that vinyl-wrapped drywall stuff in office buildings; it was usually tongue&groove jointed to the next panel using a steel stud as a biscuit. I'd be inclined to just fill the groove and fastener holes with regular mud using one minimal coat, then cover the whole thing up with flat wall-covering (no texture), using that slightly gummy cement they sell in paint stores. If the wall covering is of decent quality, it could be painted when it gets a little rough and treated like drywall from there on. The seams might need a little mudding (using mesh tape if the seams are a bit curly) at that point, but not much. PS: I've never had a problem using mesh tape with pre-mixed mud. It has almost never cracked and has always held together well. The only reason I can see for avoiding that combination is that the shrinkage might reveal the mesh pattern more than hot mud would , but the final coat has always hidden it well enough for me.
This video was so incredibly helpful. I want to paint over my wall and was concerned I would mess it up. This video makes me feel more confident about doing it.
Vinyl covered walls should be sanded with coarse grit sandpaper to remove any shine and to create a rough surface which will allow the next coat to adhere. Then coat with Kilz primer, preferably the solvent based version of Kilz. Then coat with drywall mud and paper tape. I highly recommend for best adhesion, that you mix water based wood glue into the drywall mud at 10-20% by volume. The drywall mud and glue mixture acts like an adhesive to bond the paper tape to the wall. Squeeze out as much of the mud from under the tape as possible. This will not delaminate or crack later. Don't use hot mud when using glue because it will not mix properly. After the paper tape-mud-glue layer has dried, then you can apply smoothing layers of hot mud or regular drywall mud as needed. You could also use the latex primer that is used to obtain adhesion of self-leveling concrete to other substrates if you want to use hot mud, because hot mud adheres to concrete primers like concrete does.

I live in a double wide and the amount of stripping they used drives me crazy. I have as many as three strips over some windows. They must have used roofers to do the inside of my trailer.
Thanks for the great video instruction on fixing these seams. A long time ago, I tried to help a friend “re-do” the walls in her living room...little did I realize I had no clue what I was doing. She was even more clueless! (At least I knew where to find a bucket of “joint compound” at Lowe’s). To say it was a terrible job would be a compliment! It was, however, a learning experience and since then I’ve improved. I continue to tackle jobs that I shouldn’t 🤷♀️ but I’m still enjoying learning. (Wish I had heard you say that about the 20 minute mud a while back... no worries though.. I learned to move up to 45 and then 90 minute all by myself😁!!). Thank you, Gin
Call me weird but I was just wondering has anybody ever just tried taking the wall down and flipping it I seriously doubt that this vinyl is on the other side I know you would have to recut for the outlets but at the same time all you did was flipping over and you can probably patch it now that it's the wrong side or will that affect the installation

He calls it 'drywall coated vinyl' but it's not really and you def would be wasting a ton of time trying to remove and flip it over (it would also get damaged/stretched and your underestimating how many outlets/etc are in a small space).
Having lived in mobile/modular homes for over 20 years, it's been my experience manufacturers also use an adhesive to attach drywall panels to the studs. I have never been able to remove a sheet in one whole piece. Welcome to the manufactured home life!
I trim out and work on new mobile homes. Vog wallboard houses are glued on exterior walls and on the marriage line of double-wides. The interior walls sometimes has glue but I've removed some without damaging it. And the other side of the wallboard has brown paper backing just like regular drywall
Idk how I got here but this video was hella interesting! I have a potentially dumb question though to everybody who's willing to answer lol; can you not just put wallpaper over the drywall instead of painting it?
You should be able to do that if you do it right. Usually you need to put a special primer/sizing on the wall to ensure the wallpaper sticks correctly. But that doesn’t solve the strips in between the sheets.
This video makes me feel like I can actually do this. I hate the walls in our home. The strips come off so easily and looks terrible. Also, I'd like to paint the walls because everything is brown in here. Thank you for being so detailed. I think I'm going to try this next year to make our mobile home feel like a home home.
Too many products and tools to purchase. After all that cost & time you spend to DYI, you should just pay an expert to do the job. Comes out about the same. Just my opinion. But I do appreciate the educational video.

That’s what they call fiberglass FLOCK , I used to use it 30+ years ago to mix with a 2 part phenolic resin , to glass bed target rifles, makes super strong bonding,
I have been a fixer upper on just about every project a house could give me. We recently bought a 3/2 Manufactured Home 15 minutes away from Perdido Key Florida. I have learned many of the light to middle skills required on my own prior to youtube. Most of those skills came with several failures before actually "getting it right". In the last 15 years, youtube has assisted me tremendously on any question I ever had. But I must say, you have been the best teacher of drywall I have ever seen. Your skills and knowledge are amazing. You not only show how to do it but also how not to do it! I am so sorry that you are not feeling 100%. I wish I had subscribed years ago! We have this horrible paneling in our house bathroom. Thank you for your video. What do I do about the wall strips on outside corners? There are also sections where the vinyl has torn off. Will sanding to smooth it and good primer work?

TY for this. I really hate these seems in my walls and watched this twice before starting project. I started in bathroom corner for practice. Now I’m glad to watch video again because it makes more sense to me. Just need two more pro tools to improve my work. This DIY’er is very appreciative.
Year's ago I knocked in the staples and nails, and screwed down any loose spots in the drywall of the mobile home I lived in, since the joints where so inconsistent, I filled them and screw dimples with automotive bondo, LOT'S of hardener, took down any high spots, then covered with mud, sanded till I was pleased, the gaps had been no where near as nice as I had just seen in this video, tight on bottom 3/8's on the top, and vice versa, can't give an update on how well it held up, as I know longer live there, sure wish that product existed when I did my mobile home, the bondo fumes are MISERABLE!!!

Thanks for the information! We have a modular that we are getting ready to redo 3 rooms. The strips of trim every 4 feet are very annoying. I am so happy I now know how the walls can be fixed before painting, and make it look good. I am going to look through your other videos. I have a fireplace I need to remove the stucco from! Thanks!!
I am currently trying to finish approximately 30' of seems in my bathroom. We have a modular home so this vid is very helpful. However I have already taped and mudded before I saw this. I have been using a a wet cloth to wet sand. In some places I can still see the tape, so I will try your method of feathering. Thank you so much. This is the 4th different video of your I have watched.
