I’ve watched a number of different videos and I had a lot of questions pertaining to ascending, descending. I reached out to Scott and he was so helpful, answered my questions, made some suggestions. I purchased the CT Quick Roll hand ascender, FN4 descender kit, and Throw Ball kit… This guy is awesome to work with, if you have questions or concerns? Contact him! I am glad I did!!!
Weather & lighting conditions r always changing. This is a great way to combat it. I know I'm very used to coming down on my climbing line. Not sure how safe I would feel w/o that standard that I'm used to in place.
Great videos. This is my first season saddle hunting and I can really appreciate your concern for safety. I’m an er nurse and have seen one too many tree stand falls. I’ve been using a grigri and backing it up using an autoblock attached to my linesmen loop. This works great srt but I find myself one sticking most days and I would really like to get rid of as much metal components as possible. That being said I’d like to hear your opinion on the JRB non jamming ascender hitch. The idea of a capture friction hitch that’s non jamming sounds amazing. I’m just very cautious of knots that aren’t proven over time.
Hi Steve, welcome ! I don’t have any experience using John’s JRB hitch climbing. John’s a good friend and we bounce ideas off each other from time to time . But I leave his style and teaching it up to him . I’ve been climbing for 37 yrs using Ropes as a Arborist in Tree Care. What i do has kept me Safe all these yrs . I understand guys getting fussy with using any metal devices while hunting . I myself primarily hunt using DRT (Rope, Carabiner) for me there is no other minimalist way to hunt . For one stick guys, I’ve put together a system that is safe , lightweight and very compact. The F4 is the size of a large pocket knife . Coupled with 8mm Oplux Rope and you have a system that weighs 19oz . It’s extremely quiet in use . and if desired you can easily apply stealth strips to either side of the devise which will not interfere with its use .
Great Idea Scott, one of the problems is there are way to many other people making stick climbing videos, one stick or multi stick, where the guy doesn't use his linemans belt until they are on their first stick or they don't use it at all...A fall from the top step of your first stick especially if you have an aider on it probably won't kill you but you will get jacked up....
No doubt Michael, I know a lot of hunters may not want to go full blown rope technique. I figured this is the next best thing. My main purpose was to come up with a system so light and compact. You don’t even know you have it on you. For the extra minute it may take you to get to stand height, The safety factor outweighs any weight or bulk or time gripe .
No mechanical parts. Rope threads through holes in devise. Once threaded you leave it on rope for the season . Go hands free devise . You can stay on it the entire time without needing a backup like Gri Gri or Madrock. Lighter , Quieter. Devise on 30’ of Oplux weighs 19 Oz . About the size of a large pocket knife
Scott, I have seen you wear more than one saddle. I am using the latitude method 2 and it is great while being tethered in but not so great on just a rope. What are some recommendations on a saddle for someone who wants to stay on a rope more?
Hey David , we’ve been using the Buzzard Roost 2 panel saddle. I had my doubts at first. But this really shines for a rope climbing saddle. It has a lot of adjustability and attention to detail. Once you dial everything in and get your leg straps right it stays in place. Benny is a great guy to deal with on top of building a great saddle. If you watched my videos for a while you’ll always here me talk about a 2 dimensional saddle build. If it’s passes the mark for a rope climber it will also be a fantastic build for leaners. Definitely not the other way around. I don’t get that most manufacturers don’t understand this concept. Guess I’ll have to build my own right. Thanks for your support David !!!
@@NYSaddleHunter Thanks Scott, since you said that also is using the Buzzard Roost 2, then I may order one today. I like the adyustable feature on the bottom panel. Looking forward to seeing Joe use his.
I left Joe’s name out of the last comment, but you know where it goes. I have 38 inch waist when wearing loose clothes, so I may order a large. My Lattitude Method 2 is the regular size. It sort of digs into my legs whon on a rope. I see the Buzzard has an adjustment for that.
I have been SRT with a GriGri and it's working but I don't like the way it slips when unlosded, so if there is a way to use the F4 as a replacement of the GriGri for SRT saddle hunting I'm ready to upgrade my gear, it would be so much lighter and more compact with a 7.5 or 8mm rope. Looking forward to see it being used in s SRT setup.
Jan The Gri-gri "+" doesn't slip when unloaded the way the gri-gri does. This is why we only recommend the gri-gri + and not the original gri-gri. We did some SRT climbing with the F4 and it worked great , however we don't know if the manufacturer has any concerns with using it for rope progress capture and using it in this application to ascend the rope . We don't see any issues with it ourselves however we don't want to promote it outside its designed use without first discussing it with the manufacturer to get their blessing for that application. It's designed as a descender however many descenders like for Example the Petzl RIg / ID can be used for RAD style SRT and we think the F4 will probably be fine in this application as well. With that being said with our initial testing so far it seems to work great however we just don't want to advertise it in that application without getting the blessing of the manufacturer in case there's any other concerns. Once we find out we will pass along the information. However we both feel it looks promising.
@@NYSaddleHunter Yes I know, Saddle Hunting is not a big thing here in Australia no equipment avalible it's DIY or getting it from US since I already had a GriGri a Climbing harness and some rope and your channel for advice SRT was the way I went, tried making my own saddle but ended up getting a Dryad Drey ( Cheapest Option ) using it in combination with my harness, it works well with the GriGri, but the occitional slip after being unloaded is not a nice feeling. And the possibillity of a lighter setup and quieter ( GriGri is noisy ) is appealing. Thanks for a great channel.
No mechanical parts that can potentially fail or wear out. You can go hands free . It locks when weighted and frees when you depress handle on devise. Run rope through 3 holes for less friction and 4 for more friction. 3 holes is easier to take up slack than 4 . Mad rock and Gri Gri you remove from rope when not in use. This you can leave on rope. So you thread it once and done . Store it in the ready position . You Leave it about 2 to 3 ft down from fixed eye . girth hitch by passing devise through eye and your done .
@@paulcrave3112 My mistake. After descending you have to pull remaining slack out and remove devise before pulling rope out. What meant to say is after rope is removed from tree. Thread it back through all the way up to eye. Then it’s ready for your next hunt. That’s what I meant by leaving it attached to rope.
The aider makes each move more efficient it's like turning a stick with 2 steps into a stick with 3 or four steps without the weight. So for a multi stick climber you will get more height per stick. For single stick climbers you'll get more hight per move. It's about maximizing efficiency. With this set up we felt it's a safe , light efficient way down matter how you choose to climb especially for guys that utilize any form of stick climbing.
Scott, have you or Joe looked at the Sterling Oplux 9mm. That may be exceptable with all the SRT gear both the gri gri and hand ascender & may work as a safety rope. I need to save weight in every way I go in the woods. I hate tree steps, they add unnecessary weight & involve a good bit of danger. I like your safery equipment in this video but sure would be great if we found something to cover drt & srt & also make tree steps safer.
Hey Dave. I carry Super Static 2 in 9.5mm. We use for both DRT & SRT. Didn’t know if you were aware of that . 75‘ of the 9.5mm is 3.3lbs. And has a MBS of just under 5k lbs . I also have HTP in the same diameter MBS is 5,979
Yes I know but I was searching for the smallest diameter Sterling Oplux that work in the gri gri. I found it listed on Amazon. 9mm and I wanted to know what you thought about it as the smallest diameter rope that would cover all the bases and be the lightest. For the gri gri it must be 8.5 according to their specs. I think now I have watched every video you & Joe have listed. Keep the knowledge flowing. Thanks
@@davidnichols6196 Gotta let you in on a secret. Joe and I have been using the F4 descending devise with Oplux 8mm also as a ascender with the Quick Roll I gotta tell you it works flawlessly. There’s no reason not to use it. It actually has less impact on it in ascending than in descending. It’s slimmer , more compact , lighter and quieter than Gri Gri or Madrock . I think once I show it being used in this fashion it’s gonna go viral . Sterling gave me the nod as well. So a lightweight SRT system. Haven’t weighed it with 75’. But the F4 with 30’ of Oplux weighs in at 19 Oz . I’m thinking 75’ Of Oplux should weigh in around 28 Oz . The whole system F4 , Quick roll , footloop and Rope and carabiner 3pounds !
Other than the rope specs being different - how does this compare with the Madrock Safeguard? I climb with just a tether and then add my repel rope when I'm finished hunting. I'd like to try this so I can use a smaller diameter rope. but I'm concerned that I can't just place the device on the rope without threading the entire thing in advance.
@@kirkloos8141 Seems like it might be more trouble than it is worth. I see a short moment where he slides the device back up. I'd like to see a longer slide to see how easy it moves.
@@youtoober87 I have resc tech that I will be using. Haven’t decided if I’m going to tie on a notch v3 quickie or just tie a loop with a 8 on a bight and girth hitch it.
I’d be afraid of that handle coming in contact with the tree as I was going around to take a weak side shot. If that handle squeezed up against the tree with the rope up against the tree as you go around the corner, that would give you quite the thriller.
It takes a bit of pressure to depress. So any thing coming in contact with it , brushing up against it won’t depress handle . The CFX is a pull style like the Gri Gri
@@paulcrave3112 yes , But it’s also oriented to the side so as not to get sandwiched between you and tree. But murphy’s law always applies. I have one CFX I’m putting through it’s paces now. And I believe it’s main objective is to eliminate that possibility. Weighs about 6oz more also wider in profile. Probably will be a bit more comfortable for some with a pull to descend rather than a squeeze. I’ll offer both variations. For me I’m leaning more towards the F4
Are you a tall 290 or short 290. The challenge is finding a saddle that you’re comfortable in . Comfort is key for an enjoyable hunt . Ropes are plenty safe for your weight. I would opt for the 9.5mm Tactical Response, it has a higher mbs What state are you from ? There will be shows popping up from now til Sept . There you can try on a bunch of different brands and see what works best for you. I steer a lot of people toward the Cruzer XC I’m a lean 6’4” 225 pounds and I use a size 3 because I like more room vs a snug fit for when the temps drop and I need heavy layers. I would tackle that issue first The MSS is your easiest choice .
@NYSaddleHunter im 6 ft , thx for the info i have 2 boys 13 and 16 thats just getting started so ill probably alot more questions i apologize in advance. Im Ga in the Athens Area home of the Bulldogs
I’ve done it . Got to do a bit more research on that before I give it my blessing. It’s designed as a descent device. I’ve paired it with the CT Quick roll hand ascender. It’s Money ! It’s a zero slack system so on all accounts it should be. 1) first needs to be proven safe and 2) don’t want to false advertise it.
