I missed this 1 a year ago. 3 foot stick trick is a big time & ball saver. On very busy 🌳 which r common for me I like using the open system. I start low on a good crotch & limb. Then tie myself off. Bring ball up with me & I don't even need to attach to throwline but light & limp rope. Nice to be able to trim nuisance branches on the way up too. Just something to attach to the ball to get to my next crotch. Sometimes my preferred crotch puts me on the wrong side of the 🌳 climbing from the ground. In that case I girth hitch which puts me in a better position from the ground. Of course a large branch crotch is better but on a smaller 🌳 @ crotch height the advantage is not too much friction but a more stable pivot point. Great video of all the different scenarios.
A monkey's fist is usually tieing the rope up into a ball that makes it weighted enough to be thrown over a limb. In this case we are using a light 2mm throwline with a 14oz weight throwball designed specifically for this task
Just started practicing with the throwball! This video has been a great help, I truly appreciate the hard work and effort that is involved with making these videos to help people learn! I need to get one of those folding cubes. Winding the rope back up in the spool sucks!!
You can say that again.I've set up several trees with loops in the past few weeks and I think I've had 10 major blowouts in the middle of the woods while doing this.Don't think I've cursed that much my whole life.I also blew up one of my throwballs in the process.Your last video helped me realize it comes in handy now for those situations when a second one is needed to adjust my throw line (damn throw ball is all duck taped together from blasting it into trees). I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one having these problems though.This obviously takes extreme patience and I believe if anyone keeps trying it will be worth it.Repition is the mother of learning right? I almost threw in the towel a few times. I'm also wondering if anyone saw me flipping out in the woods.ha ha thanks guys your keeping me busy during this crazy pandemic.
Joe made a comment about how when the throw rope was over the wrong limb and it would not be a problem for SRT. My SRT gear won't be here for a few weeks, so I haven't had a chance to play with any of these ideas. I don't think I have the complete concept down of how to tie into the tree for SRT climbing. Would you consider a video on different scenarios an SRT climber would face, specifically showing how the line is configured in the tree. For example, in this video you did a great job of showing how a DRT climbing would solve the issue but I would have like to see how the SRT climber would do it.. Thanks for all these great ideas.
Jeff yes I'll try to put something together that better explains the difference of what you can do DRT vs SRT might have to wait till the weekend I'm working 12 hour days and not much time till Saterday
@@NYSaddleHunter Thanks. No rush. My gear won't get here until May 7 anyway. I think i know the answer but with SRT, if I am using a smaller tree which does not have a large enough limb near my hunting height I would want to girth hitch around the trunk. I think the technique is to use a small branch to hold the throw rope or paracord preset in place so that I can get the climbing rope up the tree. The climbing rope would be girth hitched to the trunk for a safe anchor which the limb would not provide. Hopefully that is correct. The other thing I am thinking about its tree which are so incredibly busy but are the only choice -- I live in Oklahoma, so often encounter areas of scrub trees with maybe one or two that are large enough but the they are full of limbs. I am guessing the best way to deal with them is to get in ahead of season with climbing sticks if need be and start cutting limbs as I work my way up so that I can clear a path for a future SRT ascent. Hey, thanks for getting Wes spur to make the kits! Great idea and big help for me. I was putting off buying my rope because I was afraid to cut and try and splice it. I didn’t know what to order as far as the ends of the rope. If your ever in Saratoga area I need a big cherry tree taken down.
It's all timing. I was releasing the ball too soon. Hitting the crotch inches short with no trajectory. Then the next throw would be releasing too late. That throw is plenty high but falls short of the crotch. I ordered a different Petzyl ball. The next day I missed the crotch & the ball came down in a fork in the trunk & stuck 6" from the fork & it bit into the bark. I wasn't using the yoyo style throw. When I get the new 1 with new line I can move 45* over 2 the right hit that crotch I'm after using the yoyo method. Thanks.
Great video. I have been practicing with a throw ball and have been encountering some challenges with a busy tree and surrounding trees. I am just gonna say i am happy i am doing this now and not in October. By then i will be a pro.
More you do now the easier it will be in October. Set paracord loops so you can pull your line in and just climb. That's the key to doing the hard part ahead of time.
What length of throw line do you typically keep in your throw bag. The throw line comes in long lengths when you buy it and I’m wondering if I should cut it down?
Also if you throw your ball and it's stuck few feet up the branch, you can tie a small stick inline with your throw line and pull it up to work it down to the crotch of the tree

I was worried about how much you guys talked about this being the hardest part, and I’ve been debating with myself about doing this style bc of how hard the ball throw may be, so I got a throw ball and line just to see and I found that instead of doing it to where you have to “time” the release of the ball ( watching Scott makes me feel like a caveman he makes it look so easy) but I’ve found that even with a pretty busy tree and a lot going on having played baseball for many years when I was younger I have a much easier time just taking up some slack and throwing the bag over a limb like a baseball, nearly first try every try and more accurate IMO. Just a thought.
Yup I've done it like that Aswell. However you can get the throwball where you want it. Efficiently if it's easier for you one way , it doesn't matter how Scott does it what matters is what works best for you. It's usually within 30' so it's not thar far a toss

Hi Scott & Joe, Again great video thanks. Do you have problems with your paracord presets rotting out and breaking. Last year I switched to monofilament but I am starting to notice I have broken presets with the monofilament. I do not think anyone is breaking them as they are the older presets and are broken high in the tree with the the ends still tied down. I think it is the UV light deteriorating the line. If your paracord is not experiencing rot where did yuo get it from?

I just did my first DRT climb today. Needless to say it was awesome. Do you just store the throw line in the cube without respooling? Also you can just take off the throw ball and retie it the way you explained, in case you don't have a second throw ball. Thanks again for the videos. Glad you like DRT climbing. Yes just pull the throwline from the bag end and drop it into the bag on to itself. You can then leave the throwball attached and drop it into the pocket in the bag before you fold up the bag. Don't wrap it up,Wrapping it will cause it to tangle.
At around 18:30 you talk about how in srt you would canopy around all that. Can you explain how in this particular situation where you are over multiple limbs ?
So in this point he's showing you how you can isolate a single limb so that the rope isn't going over multiple limbs creating more friction for DRT/MRS climbing. More friction makes climbing more difficult. With SRT you would use a midline alpine butterfly on your main climbing line which becomes a slip knot just like you use on you tether and you could run it around multiple limbs , the main trunk or a single limb and it will still work as long as it's at the hight you want because once the canopy hitch is set it's keeping the climbing line stationary in the tree and with SRT that's all you need is a single stationary line anchored solidly to climb on. You could also basal anchor which means anchor the end of the climbing line to the base of the tree. And climb up the other end of the rope.as long as the high point Is over a good safe healthy limb crotch.
On the apple tree demo when you tied the butterfly to get around the limb. Wonder if your only had one throw ball could you just untie it from the front once its on the ground then tie it on the back pull it up over the undesirable limb and let it drop back down?
I got my throwball stuck in a branch crotch at around 10/15 metres high today and when I was pulling it I got it stuck even more and for ages I had to mess around pulling the paracord and when I got home I thought of a better idea. I cut of a 15cm piece of log and carved it into a makeshift ww2 hand grenade and made a V groove the whole way round it at the top. So my plan is to try throwing it overhead as I will use a poachers knot and tightly tie my paracord to it. What's your thoughts on this as I think it is a brilliant idea as I'll be more accurate throwing like this than throwing underarm ?
Hey whatever works for you !!! . I only make it look easy cause I’ve been at it for 35 yrs. When you have to thread the needle at 70 to 80’ every day. 20 to 30 is a chip shot . I will say this. I don’t know that most people practice throwing a throwball enough or that your trees you hunt are real difficult to get a line in. Sometimes it’s easier to hit the lowest limb first then try for the next when your in the tree with the tail end of your rope. Sometimes this is easier than hitting your target limb . If it’s a option ?
@@NYSaddleHunter true, practise makes perfect. But to bring the accuracy in quicker I feel this overhead grenade styled throw will work a treat and save me time. Looking forward to getting out tomorrow to climb some tree. Thanks for the tip on throwing extra line onto limbs above when in the tree. This will come in handy for real high trees but that I feel is something I will focus on more in months to come when I can afford better equipment and better longer rope as I only really need to be max 15-20 metres high to start with then I'll work my way up.
Is there a way to store the throw line in the cube without getting a bird's nest tangle? I've tried storing the line in the cube with and without the spool. Both ways the line keeps tangling up.
Pull line completely out in a straight line. Remove throw ball . While retrieving with one hand , pinch the line between your thumb and forefinger of other hand . While stowing it in throw bag . The more you do this the better . Your trying to erase the lines memory from when it was spooled. Give that a try
Stick with a 14 Oz. Easy to throw. Heavy enough to get your line back down even if your over a few limbs or if the bark is knarly . Pair it with a 1.75 or 2.2 throw line
They actually make one . It goes on the end of a section pole it will launch a throwball 100’ vertically. Don’t think it would be beneficial on a 30’ ft throw . Plus you would have to carry a 6’ section pole in with you
Still like to see you go into a blind area see the best choice tree perfect off the deer trail realize the best tree is that very difficult limb tree perfect right there then realize it would be an act of God to be able to connect a perfect set up , then get frustrated have to search all over for the right tree to realize your way off the trail....Obviously the only way is presets and or cary your ropes plus climbing sticks so you can make sure your in that dynamic spot not off by a mile, and I realize after a while you will get better but realistically there would be a lot of frustrations on pearl harbor attacks because the difficult trees would be the one you need to get in and we don't have time to scatter around on the ground for 1 hr centing up the area.. But like I said earlier its a great tool for big trees and preset line setups👌
Well you pretty much have to weigh your options. To me its simple I have sticks and rope climbing methods. If the spots a real long hike and I want to make my life easier by not carrying in sticks and I find a good tree that works for the preset do that. If to get in the right tree it's taking me out of the perfect tree and it's a better option to lug in the sticks for that set , do that. The difference is I have the option now. Also I can get in trees that I cant get in with sticks. The tree, and the spot dictate the climbing method, the more options I have the better and I lean towards ropes if I can do either in the same tree because I can go in 10lbs lighter and I can climb up and down faster. So the spot dictates the method
Going in now b4 the heat & bugs is a big bonus. Also the ground is flat & u can tell exactly what the deer activity was in that area from September through November when it counts. I have an area where there is alot of sign but the deer relocated during the depths of winter. I'm really not messing that area up right now & I'm just leaving a paracord line which is not going 2 affect the area like running around there during August putting up cameras.
Is there a reason why you swing the throwball rather than just holding the ball in your hand and tossing it? Seems like swinging it would take a lot more timing and coordination.
I suppose you could just toss it any way you find it easier to be accurate . It does require some timing and coordination. I personally found it was well worth the time to take a half hour to find a large easy tree with large limbs to practice in and just get a feel for learning how to be able to get accurate. First time I just went out into the woods it was frustrating. But I quickly got a feel for the timing and it's not hard to quickly get very proficient at Hitting a limb 30' feet away.
If you can hit limbs accurately up to 30’ by tossing it you’ll have a promising career in the NBA. Lol. The reason for the swing is . As an Arborists you have to prune large trees and the easiest way to access them is to throw 60 to 70’ into the tree over a limb to start your climb . The swing aides you in velocity to hit those high crotches. Granted as hunters we don’t need to reach that high. It’s just a time honored technique we use. . By all means do what works best for you. . Thanks David
@@NYSaddleHunter That makes sense. I can see the mechanical advantage to that when throwing longer distances. I have never thrown one. They should make a slingshot for that. Ha ha. I think I have watched all of them and shared them with a lot of hunting buddies who have never considered this style of hunting. You both are great teachers and ambassadors of saddle hunting. With that said, I sure hope those vendors realize they have struck gold with you guys and are probably the main reason they can't keep stuff in stock.
