Unfortunately, real life has people preaching, "Don't spread hate," to people who already don't spread hate. Meanwhile, the preachers ignore and defend the people who actually do spread hate. Proving that ideals depicted in fiction don't always translate well to reality.

Unicorn taught me all that. OO taught me that anime from a good series can still be shit.

Unicorn was also my first exposure to the Universal Century, but I was completely clueless as to what even Newtypes were. I had only known Innovators from Gundam 00 (😂 my first Gundam series in general). But, I think, like you, I got awestruck with the concepts and wanted to learn everything about them. Years later I have a PG Kit of the Unicorn, have every installment of the Universal Century released on Blu-Ray so far, and know some of the Mobile Suits by model numbers. It hits some people differently. I understand where you’re coming from!

Yep this was my first Gundam series ever. I enjoyed the visuals but got really lost. Maybe Ill watch the other series and come back to Unicorn.

edmond lee no problem. Normally I would say to watch ZZ Gundam as well for the sake of continuity, but what I recommended before is the minimum necessary.

Dont watch the movies for MS Gundam and Zeta, as they changed elements especially in Zeta than the series, which the Unicorn follows. Also watch 0080, MS08Th Team, and Stardust Memories as these events also tie into Unicorn

They also have the best animation and Soundstracks to date. Thunderbolt got me into free Jazz AND Pop lol

Thunderbolt also has the heaviest fuckin' suits in almos any series AND jazz. You cant go wrong with jazz.

Well, Thunderbolt took place on the final days of the One Year War in UC

Riddhe becomes a monster while he loses the few tenuous meaningful connections he had to other people. Marida becomes part of a ragtag, cobbled together family (Zinnerman, Mineva, and Banagher) and finds meaning and peace for the first time in her life.

Riddhe literally gets rejected by a girl who would rather jump out of a plane than being with him. This is just a whole new level, much worse than friendzoning someone. It's like a very polite way of saying "Can you just fk off already?" That's why when I saw the scene at 14:54, I just cracked up lol.

Best Sawano soundtrack to boot.

However, I don't think I'll make them THAT specific (dedicating lists to specific timelines) since I'd like to have a lot of variety. That way they'd be more fun for me and for newcomers who don't know a lot about Gundam in general. Afterall, most of my fanbase are Kaiju fans ;)

Thanks man! I can sorta see the Methuss's transformation, but the aesthetics of the mobile suit always remind me of Zeta. Also, the Gundam Wiki refers to the unit as being a mass produced version of the Zeta and even its name stands for "Refined Zeta Gundam Escort Leader."

In-story, ReZel is actually derived from *Zeta II*. Ironically, even though Zeta II is meant to be Zeta Gundam's successor, the engineers who built it opted to use a more simplified frame akin to Methuss instead of the super-complicated Zeta frame. So, it really goes like this: Methuss -> Zeta II -> ReZel. That reminds us that the name "Zeta" on a MS is not a guarantee of direct/close connection with Zeta Gundam mechanically speaking.

KaijuNoir, Androyus is right. REZEL got its transformation from methuss to save for production cost. Z+ constitutes a mass production of zeta, and Delta+ is closer to zeta since it is based on delta, a conceptual prototype for hyaku shiki and was something like a brother to zeta.

If Riddhe remained this way, I would agree. Riddhe was a well meaning idealistic WASP (equivalent) who was ignorant of what his family's power and influence did to the Universal Century. Banagher's grandpa performed the terrorist attack on Laplace. Riddhe's grandfather Ricardo Marcenas had a rightwing brother who was in the Federation military. According to the novel, it was this person who ordered the attack on Laplace, specifically to change the language in the UC charter that Ricardo was behind so that the Federation would then be the all powerful "god" that's discussed when the Unicorn visits the Laplace wreckage. These were the original sins that Riddhe had to take in when he first proposed to Mineva Riddhe hoped to destroy the entire culture at once by marrying Mineva. It's like the disillusionment that many experience with politics at first. There are obvious answers but no quick solutions. It was both out of lust and a misguided sense that by at once joining the families that were responsible for the situations in Earth and Space, all their problems would be solved in a fell swoop. Mineva and Riddhe at once are given harsh lessons: Mineva has feelings for Banagher, who asked her what she wanted instead of making her into a figurehead like she had been before when she was younger. Riddhe gets rejected as well as scolded for a second time for not being broad enough with his thinking. Riddhe has a run in with the idealistic Banagher, and something to note about his attitude: he hates when Banagher's methods work. When Banagher makes an effort to come out of his mobile suit and makes frequent and persistent appeals to Loni, Riddhe sees her as a target and their circumstances as unavoidable and inescapable. Riddhe is projecting his circumstances to everyone around him. He wants and ultimately forces the outcome he wants by shooting Loni, despite her ultimately breaking down thanks to Banagher's efforts. After his newfound wisdom of protecting a corrupt system as opposed to welcoming potential chaos, Riddhe gets rejected a third time as Mineva literally decides to jump out of a plane than go with him. Of course he kills Marida. Riddhe is the realistic soldier that everyone wants Banagher to be. To repeat, Riddhe is what Banagher would be otherwise. Riddhe responds to every scenario with the realistic earnestness of a child growing up to become a soldier. He has to grow into the shoes that his government is corrupt, that his family is corrupt, that his military is corrupt, and that there is no magical solution for his problems like he had hoped when he decided to take Mineva to Earth. And everyone that he senses is telling him he is wrong, starting with Mineva and ending with his foil, the immature and idealistic Banagher. And then Riddhe shoots Marida and at once sees her, the way that Banagher did, without misconceptions, as only a Newtype can. He has an epiphany. He didn't believe in the person he was wanting to protect. He weeps for the harm he has caused, with full understanding, knowing he can never make it up. I would have cried too. I don't understand the hate for Riddhe. He is a believable earnest soldier who discovers that the world he thought existed and defended is full of crap and will never get better. He tries to get behind this mindset the best he can, and tries so hard to be realistic. He grows up and ascends quickly in the Banshee. Somehow instead of growth we demand protagonists do not experience missteps along their path. People would prefer heartless badasses than the noble people we preach to our children to be like, who argue to be fair even when it's hard and that every life is sacred. The first time Banagher called this out I respected his character. When Riddhe broke down after killing Marida, I respected his growth. I am in the minority here though.

Actually, I don’t look his character that way. I see that as the tiniest misbehavior can lead toward this kind of situation. It’s the most useless fight ever, but it’s possible.

I don't think it was explained exactly why the Unicorn was chosen as the key to Laplace's Box, but I suppose they did so because it was the most advanced mobile suit at the time and was something that was sure to protect whoever it was that would open the Box. Though, for all I know it could've been elaborated on in the original light novel series, much like Full Frontal's origins.

I didn't mention them because I didn't want to spoil/ruin these neat moments for fans who have yet to see the series.

KaijuNoir That I can really appreciate. Aside from that great review! Regarding spoilers though-, while I know it's hard to conceal Audrey Burne's identity in a small spoiler review... It might have been worth trying. 2/3 people I've gone through UC with didn't realise who she was until that one moment in episode 2, and it was glorious! I'm also glad you didn't mention a certain spoiler from the novel. The whole "the vengeful part of Char's spirit stated in the Sazabi's cockpit, so when Full Frontal was created by Anaheim using the data from the Sazabi that vengeful part of Char entered Frontal" bit. Sure, it's not explained in the anime (with words) but more through visuals and Char (the real char)'s dialogue near the end of episode 7.

The reason why I went into her backstory was that felt like it was necessary to go in-depth with her character along with the other major players. So I couldn't go into her motivation without explaining who she is and where she fits in the whole story. While it would've been interesting to have explored the "Char's enraged spirit" side of Full Frontal, I'm okay with it being told through visuals as it probably would've taken up too much time to explain such a convoluted backstory for a half modified-half possessed character. Also, I'm glad you enjoyed the review my friend!

When does lalah and chars spirit form appear?? I watched unicorn from the OVA and i watched it a LONG TIME AGO so i might forget it

The original OVA is _much_ better. The pacing is so much easier to digest, and there's no annoying exposition at the start of each episode.

Watch Zeta. Lots of mech battles, drama, good animation, great mech design.

The ver ka "full" psychoframe is not canonical. It was just the cockpit in CCA. The Ver Ka is basically a "what if" reimagining as I understand it.

@Ted Hodge There is isn't a canonical material anymore, since unicorn is based on CCABC which and therefore is not the same as the movie, the verka is a reinterpretation yes, but is also based on material of the CCABC (that is why the light of axis shock cover the whole unit, first not just the cockpit like in the movie and in high streamer novel).

The 7 part theatrical version is simply called "Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn," While the TV edit adds the subtitle "RE: 0096." As far as I know, all 7 parts were given individual DVD and Blu-ray relases by Bandai in both Japan and America. However, some of these releases might be out of print and a complete box set (which is what I'm waiting for) has yet to be released. Luckily for you, if you decided to collect any of the Japanese Blu-rays, all of them contain the English dub and subs. This was back in the day when Bandai tried to have Americans import their local discs so that they don't have to spend money manufacturing discs for international countries. They're still doing that with the newest theatrical series, Gundam: The Origin.

Right stuf is supposed to release the entire 7 part OVA collection next year in March.

The pre order price $42 on Right Stufs website. The reatail price will be $64. This isn't going to be a box set like the Gundam Wing Collectors edition was. Most of Right Stufs releases have been reasonbly priced.

0079 (The original series) and Zeta are two of my favorites. I love the mobile suit design, but the animation is bad by modern standards. I try to ignore the animation and focus on the stories which are amazing.

F91, 0083 Stardust Memory, and 0080 War in the Pocket all have top tier animation and art design.

I ended up turning Gundam Month into Gundam Mania, an irregular series that I can come back to any time in between my giant monster movie reviews. That being said, Denny and I plan to review IBO Season 2 once the dub has finished airing since Denny wants to compare the performances between the two dubs.

Well I can't wait. Do you think that you could ever review G Gundam on it, because it seems to always be overshadowed by Gundam Wing? More people need to know that it is actually a very good Gundam show, if not one of the best.

Well, he was only 19 in the original series, despite looking and acting MUCH older than that lol.

Bright just looked old even when he was still a teenager. So now when he's actually an older man, he still looks the same.

In short, if you are born with an old face, don't despair, your aging will be less noticeable.

Things do die back a bit for a while at least. There are a few serious conflicts but no full scale war until UC 153 and that's mainly only because Zanscare is batshit insane.

Ok, better explanation: indeed the old guy was actually his father, who sent him away when he was young at the request of his wife, who left at the same time. Banagher had some tests done on him as a child though, which seemingly partly awoke his abilities as a newtype. Its these half awakened abilities that make him kinda vacant and distant when we meet him at first.....til he meets Minerva, who literally falls into his life. So powerful is her focus and desire to save so many, no matter the cost to herself, it literally blows the boys psychic mind. He also seems 'soul mated' to her, though its more implied than pronounced. Hence my joke of psycho boner heh.

The Unicorn Gundam was originally made as an anti-Newtype weapon developed by Anaheim Electronics, the same company that built the previous Gundams for the Federation. However, it was Cardeas Vist that repurposed the machine into the key to Laplace's Box. Given its original programming, it's not a perfect machine for peace and so it is ultimately up to the protagonist to use its power responsibly (like humanity and our ability to change the world with our various tools and resources). So in a way, you're right in that it adds tension and drama for the characters and setting, as all good plot devices should.

0080 is probably a much better starting point. It doesn't drop you into the deep end with Newtypes right away but gives a good solid base in a compact package.

I turned a buddy of mine into a Gundam fan through Unicorn.

LOL there are actually advantages on watching Unicorn first. First impressions. Nice animations, awesome gundam, awesome OST. Its all AWEspiring. If they didn't know a single gundam yet, then Banagher would be a good starting point because of how mediocre and Mary Sue he is. After this, of course they would experience the better gundam series in a positive light.

In due time my friend. Denny, the guy who I reviewed Season 1 with, wants to watch the whole series in English first to compare and contrast the dialogue.
