"Mobituaries": The final resting place of sports superstar Jim Thorpe 

My parents and I visit Jim Thorpe all the time and it’s such a beautiful place! It always looks beautiful in the winter when snow is on the mountains!

Your "Mobituary" regarding Jim Thorpe the athlete and the town in PA named after him was touching and important, both for its Native American focus but also, for me personally. I grew up there and have maintained our family homestead on the Northern part of the town. The point of this feedback is to emphasize some important issues regarding "Mauch Chunk", the town's original name. Geographically it is pivotal. With the Lehigh River flowing through its five mountains, the three boroughs intersect with a lot of history. The native tribe, the Lenape, named the area "Mauch Chunk", or "Bear Mountain" since the main mountain looks like a "sleeping bear"., Across town to the West is Mount Pisgah, cone shaped, where anthracite / hard coal was discovered in North America, leading to a long history of coal mining to the west and a series of canals and train services. Flagstaff Mtn to the South is a high ridge with a pavillion that was the venue for the famous Dorsey Brothers in the big band era. Broad Mtn and the first Pocono mtn round out the Northwest aspects of the town leading to Pocono resorts. Nearby is a large waterfalls, Glen Onoko, with a fascinating history of its own. The economic history is also important. With the founding of coal and its transportation system, the town housed the important Packer family with their mansions with treasures of the mid-nineteenth century. Their church, St Marks, is also a treasure cove. While it was a rail hub for decades, it is interesting that the return of the steam trains is now a major tourist attraction as is the main street, Broadway, with buildings like the Dimmick Library. As with many towns in the area, many of us are 2nd/3rd generation immigrants.. hard working and proud to be Americans. I love every one of these. Remember the Burt Lancaster movie so much as a kid. I’m glad you shined one more light on his wonderful life.

I felt so sorry (and ashamed as a white man) for the tremendous racial discrimination Thorpe suffered through his entire life. Not to mention the humiliating roles in movies of horribly stereotyped Native Americans. It was "shameful." But, hey, it was no different than how virtually all people "of color" were treated. To rob "the greatest athlete in the world" of medals because of a technicality (which happened just once, for one summer, to feed his family, never warned not to) should be remembered as one of the most reprehensible realities in American history.

I was in Jim Thorpe and Poconos and didn't know they were so near to each other.

Mr. Thorpe should be returned to his birthplace. Enough of this sweeping under the rug this despicable treatment of Native Americans. The children of the Carlisle Indian School is another shameful story that should be corrected.

What This story doesn't tell, is how the family wants him back in Oklahoma and buried on tribal land.

Im from the area i remember sneaking out of that court house during a mock trial and getting a beer with my buddies at molly macguiers when i was 16

In high school in Oklahoma thorpe was 2d best athlete in his school. He had a bigger faster teammate. According to teacher there, Doc Harrington, who later taught me in high school chemistry in Albuquerque in 1969 What happened to that other guy? Also an Indian.

Thorpe was the last of the great athletes who played college football, ran track, play baseball, won gold medals in the olympics. No other has done what Jim did. Bo Jackson did not, there was no other like Thorpe.

Something seems kind of off and disrespectful about these segments. Using "Mobituaries" to trivialize and take ownership of some person's death for a story.

For fun in Oklahoma, Thorpe and his good friend, bigger and faster than Thorpe!, wd run around the grounds at school jumping up and off big boulders. An obstacle course dance they did. For recreation and fun Thorpe was not as good then at this game they played as his bigger faster teammate. What happened to that other guy?
